Analysis Umpires

Don't forget Newnes battling in open territory on the flank against the ex-Crow-Cricketer, free-kick against for a jumper snag. Later, same flank, Walsh battling in the open field, cops a huge jumper-pull (jumper was at least 12 inches from his body) ... play on.

Or the ruck contest where English gets both hands around Pittonet's arm and pulls ... no free. Even Derwayne called it, that's how blatant it was.

The Vandermeer on Walsh one set me off. Was just an exact example of what the AFL keeps saying they want to stamp out, and had been consistent with early, then just..... .... ....

Could last night have just been the consequence of the time slot?

You play primetime, you get the best umpires. You play on Foxtel, on the final time slot, in the evening on Sunday, you're not exactly just getting the first umpires picked. Then you've got the Dogs' standard aura that wins them more frees than their opposition, and bob's your uncle and fanny's your aunt.

Win more games against top sides and free-kick count will even up- umps have their own biases and belief systems to go with their myopia.

We could have easily got a few 50 metre frees our way due to Doggies players running too close to marker and even though the line - but obviously it wasn't one of this week's hot rules to police - smarter play maybe is for Carlton marker would be to back into a collision and score the free that way - players should learn to bring their opponent in close enough for a mongrel smart play like that...

Cripps shouldn't have a mullett head chest puff around him without another Carlton bloke running through the Mullett head - that would have scored maximum mongrel points if it had occurred - he needed to be put on his arse in no uncertain manner.

The AFL through regular and unnecessary tweaking have made it all but impossible for the game to be umpired consistently. I don’t envy the umpires. I just do not know which way the umpire will point after a whistle is blown. I really don’t.
When you are invested in a game, it is incredibly difficult not to be frustrated.

I honestly think the club needs to reach out to the AFL to get clarity on why we give away so many frees yet don't seem to receive frees ourselves when the roles are reversed. I appreciate it's an extremely difficult game to umpire, but we are on the end of a lopsided free kick count (particularly early in games) every week lately
Coach should have the avenue to engage with the umpires to ask for clarity around the decisions.

is this true though? aren't umpires rostered equally - other than finals?

I mean, I don't know, but it'd make sense to do so.

You'd want the best on display on Friday/Saturday night rather than at no-one's watching this Sunday evening after the kids have gone to bed and I should probably follow 'cause I'm working in the morning.

can every footy supporter read this please?
Took him 2 years to figure out all fans want is consistency? When he was umpires boss? WTF did he think fans wanted?

Mistakes, while frustrating are ok, can live with those. It is when there is a pattern of umpire interpretations that show they have got their own ‘scarves’ on, though not as supporters, that fans react.

Have seen it in local competitions, where umpires go into games with preconceived ideas about what the teams stand for and behaviour of players, then umpire accordingly instead of judging each piece of play on its merits. Would be hard to believe it doesn’t happen at the highest level of AFL as well.

I would have thought the Vic umps would be fine, majority wouldn’t be going into work so can achieve their Mon-Fri job from a hotel room instead of home.
they’d be allowed to take their families with them as per players for a relaxing time around the pool and hard to imagine the umps would have any friends that would miss hanging out with them.....

Bit harsh.

Next someone will suggest they don’t even like each other ...

We know that umpires make mistakes - they are human (well, most of them are...). Something that I find particularly frustrating though is the extent the AFL will go to after a round to justify poor decisions that are made. I remember the late Clinton Grybas calling the AFL the House of Fonzarelli once - they can't say that they were wro..... well, you know.

I understand it's a fine line, and if I was an employee of the AFL, I'd want my employer to back me up. As a supporter though, I would much prefer it, if in the same way as players and coaches make mistakes (and this is acknowledged by all and sundry), there was more willingness to acknowledge when they get it wrong. Their failure to do so on many occasions leads to confusion about interpretation of rules and breeds tin-foil hat-wearing conspiracy theorists

Just on the old "make umpires professional" thing.

Name one sport where the umpires have been made professional and it has made any difference on the standard.
Take cricket for example. Who would argue that cricket umpiring, with a professional umpiring panel, is any better than it was pre-icc panel.
Heck, the latest major international tournament was basically decided by a mistake in law.

Off the * board:

"Pretty sure the umpires are instructed by the AFL to go out and make life as difficult as possible for us."

And yet, I was led to believe those were the instructions from the afl regarding carlton? so confused.......

Wasn't great today, but I refuse to blame them for the loss.

If only Casboult hadn't fluffed his lines 15 mtrs out in the 2nd quarter (for example)

I am sure David Teague will not blame the umpires and nor should we.
