Roast Umpiring: Corruption or Incompetence, or both

I have updated the stats in the OP about free kicks For v Against for both us and West Coast.

The pattern continues - WCE get a lot more frees at home than their opponents and do ok on the road.

We continue to do ok at home and so so on the road.

Rd 20 frees paid in the derby 61, frees paid in the showdown 25. The bullshit inconsistency continues.

We have been umpired by 35 different umpires. Most games umpired in our games

Sam Hay 3 home games + 0 on the road
Mathew Nicholls 2 +2
Leigh Fisher 1 + 3
Andrew Mitchell 1 + 2
Justin Schmitt 1 + 2
Jacob Mollison 1 + 2
Simon Meredith 2 + 1
Brett Rosebury 2 + 0
Ray Chamberlain 1 + 1
Shane McInerney 2 + 0
Shaun Ryan 2 + 0
Andrew Stephens 0 + 2

When the crowd bronx cheers the umpires in the last because we finally were awarded a free...

What a joke. I don't think the umpiring has ever been this consistently bad. Feels like there's no integrity in the game.

My biggest beef with the umpires tonight was the Johnson shepherd that denied us a goal. There was an umpire 5m away, who had a perfect side on view of the impact, so would have seen what part of the body the bump occurred on, and he let it go. The umpire that made the call saw it from 50 m away, with Johnson’s body between him and the impact. Purely a guess. It ends up being a 50/50 call about wether or not he hit him high, which he possibly did. But if it’s not your call and such a close one, stay out of it and let the closest umpire make a decision.

But then how would would Mr Beverley Hills 90210 coiffure get on TV?

Not Port related but we saw a classic example of how the review system has fcuked with the goal umpires heads.

There was a call in the GWS/Crows game where it was clearly a behind. Was closer to the goal post that the behind post and this fcuk wit called for a review saying “I think it’s a behind but can we check if it went out on the full”.

I suppose we should be grateful that his call was a behind.

Certainly not satisfied with umpiring. Umpire standing next to the 2 players. The collingwood player gives him a hand fist hit, motlop sucked in and returns the favour. 50 metre penalty. Watts i think at begin last quarter gives a good handball to rockliff by goals. Front on tackle ok, but holding the ball? There were others.

Rockliff shit himself and panicked- would have been better if he had just tried to knock the ball thru for a behind. No composure whatever. That started the Collingwood avalanche!

Revealed: The full report which blows the lid on which clubs are the darlings of AFL umpires

Everyone hates Collingwood, except the umpires. Two decades of data crunched by a Melbourne mathematician reveals the Pies, West Coast Eagles and Western Bulldogs are the darlings of the men in green. And the revamped Adelaide Oval is fast emerging as another whistleblower paradise for Don Pyke’s Adelaide Crows.

Nathan Buckley’s troops have ranked 1st, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 3rd for free kicks paid to advantage across the past five years. Curiously, even when on the road Collingwood sit in the top three for free kicks awarded in away games in 13 of the last 23 AFL seasons. “That’s a dream run,” researcher John Marinopoulos declared in his report compiled for the Herald Sun.

The report shows the powerhouse Eagles have been on the right side of the free kick ledger while playing home matches at Subiaco or the new Perth Stadium in all but one of the last 23 seasons. They have ranked a runaway 1st for home free kicks in nine of the past 15 seasons.

Sacked St Kilda coach Alan Richardson once famously referred to the favourable run of umpiring enjoyed by the Eagles while playing in front of an adoring home Perth crowd as the “noise of affirmation”. Since 2012 alone, West Coast has averaged five more free kicks at home than their opposition, despite an abnormally poor run this year.

After shifting to its new home ground in 2014, Adelaide has ranked near the top of the free kick tree in five out of the past six seasons.

Is it all the Umpires' fault or do we have to take some blame? WCE are miles in front, is that because they are favoured at home or because they are coached to play smarter? Maybe we need a mole in the WCE camp to see if they are doing anything to play to the umps?

I would have expected some variation in the plus/ minus count but the differential between top and bottom is extraordinary and that cannot be down to chance alone. The surprise to me is that we are actually mid table I would have expected us to be at the bottom as we are rarely in the black with the Umpires.

I note that GWS' ranking is referred to as a 'Giant injustice'. I get the Giant pun but why is it an 'injustice' that the Giants are poorly treated by the Umpires? Have GWS done something that demands they be rewarded with free kicks that are not there? The fact that GWS have had so many draftees and consequent inexperience in their sides over the years probably explains why they give away free kicks.

Sometimes I dont even know why someone is getting a free kick. Dirty campaigners.
That's better than me. I feel it's random most of the time.
