Roast Umpiring: Corruption or Incompetence, or both

Haha had to dig around AFL website to find this article. Not on the front page of their website.

As they cryptically alluded to on The Front Bar - umpires boss, sorry that's Head of Officiating Stephen McBurney, seemed to have more success chasing CFMEU boss John Setka when he was commissioner of the Australian Building and Construction Commission than running his umpiring department and improving umpiring performance.

THE AFL has conceded its process "failed" regarding the Lachie Schultz concussion situation, revealing the miscommunication after the match came from the umpiring department, not the field umpires.

Schultz was concussed in a heavy tackle with Fremantle defender Jordan Clark at Optus Stadium last Thursday night, with umpires not stopping play to allow the Collingwood forward to receive medical assistance.

The AFL initially released a statement saying umpires did not see Schultz on the ground, but would have stopped play had they realised. But audio published on Tuesday night showed the umpires were aware Schultz was injured, but made the decision to not stop play.

On Tuesday, AFL EGM of Football, Laura Kane, admitted the first AFL statement released about the Schultz incident was "incorrect, but we were given the wrong information from the umpires".

But on Wednesday, Kane clarified the miscommunication had in fact come from the umpiring department, not the field umpires.

"Our process in determining what happened Thursday night failed and for that we take full responsibility," Kane said.

"Today we have determined there was a miscommunication from members of the umpiring department, not the field umpires, which formed the basis of our initial public statement on Friday.

"Those team members have been counselled and reminded of the importance of ensuring our process is fully followed regarding these types of incidents and in this instance it was not.

"I have asked GM Football Performance Josh Mahoney to review these processes to ensure the right information is communicated and to ensure this does not happen again. "Everyone, including our umpires are aligned in ensuring the health and safety of players continues to be the utmost priority and the AFL has been in regular contact with the AFLUA today."

Earlier on Wednesday, Collingwood said it had been "surprised" by the AFL's handling of the situation "A little bit surprised with some of the internal communications (at the AFL)," Gardiner said on Wednesday."But from our perspective, it doesn't really change our position, which was we felt like on the night that play should have been stopped.

Love how AFL house keeps adding more executive positions and everything gets significantly worse. Pathetic organisation. Pigs in the trough who don't even do any real work.

So, you have a clear fencing response from Schultz, then him falling over (which at least one umpire clearly sees, given his response) but they do not stop the game, which makes Schultz have to run from the ground (which is great for concussion).
He didn't "have to" as a result of the game continuing, he chose to, and the Collingwood medical staff let him.

Baffled why they aren't getting called out for that, instead of lying him down and definitively calling for the stretcher.

What did PAFC get fined for mis-managing a concussion?

Can they bring a stretcher onto the ground when the game has not stopped? I assumed they couldn't.

But you are right, the Collingwood medical staff should not be allowed to avoid blame here.

Pleased to hear Eddie Everywhere driving this angle in the media, dropping truth bombs and leaking previous incidents of similar misconduct

........ oh sorry, that only applies to indigenous Port Adelaide players

If medical staff call for a stretcher the umpires are instructed to stop the game immediately.

Collingwood's medical staff didn't do that. So why should anyone be expecting the umpires to override the medical staff who were clearly with Schultz?

They didn't forget the biggest incident of the game reportted on by the media.

They blatantly lied, thinking nobody would dig up the tape.

Classic AFL employees covering their arse.
Lets just make this clear.

The field umpires never lied. The AFL executives made a public statement that they attributed to the field umpires. A statement that the field umpires never made.

This is what the umps have meant by the AFL throwing them under the bus.

100%

Umpires can't rule on whether a player is concussed, or just winded and able to be helped off etc.

Incorrectly treating Aliir cost the club $100k, and a hit to the Dr's professional reputation.

One of them made signals that I took to be him calling for the stretcher, just after Schultz had fallen over after taking a few steps. I have assumed they cancelled that before he jogged off the field. I could be wrong on all of this though.

As I said above, I think the medical staff should also be criticised here.

No worries, Laura Kane has thrown Josh Mahoney under the bus.

It appears they didn't - its now appears the umpiring department lied to the AFL / Laura Kane;

This'll just be more face saving from Kane. There's probably not even a communication with the umpiring department, they're just backroom enough to not face public scrutiny.

How the hell does Kane even have a job at AFL House? She was previously at the incredibly well run bastion of North Melbourne. Did she get the AFL job as another AFL gift to save North, life they did in giving Brad Scott the job so that North could escape the cost of sacking him with significant pay remaining on his contract.

I'm amazed the game tonight was still able to go ahead.

Laura Kane looks like she hasn't grown into her face yet.

She is the beacon for society reaching true equality

"Equality has arrived when we can elect to office women who are as incompetent as some of the men who are already there." - Maureen Reagan.

I have never met Tanya Hosch myself but have heard second hand from people who have had to deal with her and the stories are not good. Says a lot of stuff but does very little.

She should really be working at the UN then.

That is why she didn't go to Darwin between Gold Coast's 2 home games, there was a commission meeting there so executives would have made presentations, would have to talk about Willie and reports are that she is resigning.

Football's most senior Indigenous representative Tanya Hosch is expected to move on from the AFL this year amid continuing pressure from the AFL.

After cancelling her appearance at the league’s Indigenous launch in Darwin this week, inclusion and social policy boss Tanya Hosch is expected to vacate her role amid growing pressure.

Tanya Hosch’s future at the AFL has grown clouded amid claims of strained relationships. Hosch has served as the league’s executive general manager of inclusion and social policy since 2016 when she became the first indigenous person to join the executive.

But her position at AFL headquarters has become uncertain in recent times due to what insiders said was increasing philosophical differences.Hosch was not in Darwin for this week’s launch of Sir Dough Nicholls Round, but has otherwise remained engaged i ongoing AFL business. She has not returned calls from SEN over the past two days.
