Roast Umpiring: Corruption or Incompetence, or both

no way can it be a coincidence, we need to be vey publicly complaining about this. Imagine what Chris Scott would do ! Normally don't like him, but thats what we need from PAFC at the moment, some Chris Scott inspired complaining.
Really would be nice to grab another couple of umpires who have been around for a while to just compare our success rate with them. Icing on the cake so to speak.

Just heard a statistic on radio. Nicholls has umpired 36 Port games. Port has won 4 of them.

So our % win over that time is what- 60-65% and in that time he has officiated in our success at about 11%?
That is indeed an outlier.

Would have been better to do some research to double-check that claim
as it proves to be extremely inaccurate !

Port Adelaide have played 35 games with Matthew Nicholls as one of the umpires
since he began his career in 2003.

Port have won 16 of those matches.

where'd you get those numbers ? there have been at least 3 (maybe 4) very different set of numbers posted.

I did a Google search of AFL tables to see if I could verify this, but all I can come up with is he has umpired us 19 times and we have won 8. We have won the free kick count 10 times in those games. In general the free kicks are fairly even, with the outliers being 10-24 in the Carlton 2015 crapfest, and 27-14 against Hawthorn in 2011.

So nice story, but probably not true. There are likely to be more games than this but you can't search their DB as far as I know.

Yes, it was quite involved. Found out that Nicholls began his AFL umpiring career in 2003 so knew not to go back further than that.

Then used links in AFL Tables to narrow search to Port games only and then clicked link for each game and checked who umpires were.

Yep look....I took the 4/36 win quote from an earlier poster without checking. My lack of attention to detail.

Since 2014, when we moved to Adelaide Oval, Nicholls has umpired:

2014

Our win against GWS at Manuka Oval (19-9)
Our loss against Collingwood at the MCG (the gastro game) (14-15)
Our win against Gold Coast at Carrara (19-19)
Our win against Carlton at Adelaide Oval (15-18)
Our loss against Fremantle at Subiaco (14-11)

2015

Our loss against Sydney at Adelaide Oval (the Farris debacle) (21-14)
Our win against the Bulldogs at Adelaide Oval (12-11)
Our loss against Geelong at Adelaide Oval (18-17)
Our loss against Carlton at the MCG (10-24)
Our win against Collingwood at Adelaide Oval (the Phil Walsh tribute game) (7-8)
Our win against Essendon at Docklands (19-25)

2016

Our win against St Kilda at Adelaide Oval (16-11)
Our win against Richmond at Adelaide Oval (25-18)

2017

Our win against Gold Coast in Shanghai (21-19)
Our loss against Melbourne at the MCG (18-26)

2018

Our loss against Essendon at Docklands (21-15)
Our loss against Hawthorn at UTAS (23-31)

9 wins (5 at home, 4 away), 8 losses (2 at home, 6 away) - 292 frees for, 291 frees against

At Adelaide Oval (7 games) - 114 for, 97 against (+17)

Everywhere else (10 games) - 178 for, 194 against (-16)

He's not against us - but he's not for us either. So when there's outlier games like Carlton (10-24), Melbourne (18-26) and Hawthorn (23-31) the free kick count becomes more noticeable. Of course, he always seems to 'even up' his free kick count with us when we are getting smashed (Sydney in 2015, Essendon this year)

"I'm not saying Port would have won, because everything changes once the scoreboard is altered, you know, they were, they were wronged quiet regularly Port." David King

From the 16.27 a call from SA, goes thru his complaints on the game and then from 17.50 with Gerard saying it was a strangely umpired game and Gerard and King's comments finishing at 18.20

That’s nice. But nothing will change. The umpires are killing the game. Too much is reliant on their opinion. Watching a neutral game is hard work when the impiring is bad:”.

Just a couple of dodgy ones. I really couldn't be stuffed looking for any more.

Gifted 5 goals from frees/50M penalties, and thats not factoring in the non decisions that resulted in goals, coasted us. Ignoring the fact we stoped at 1/4 time and had atrocious ball movement and structure from that point on. Lost by 3 points, We still should have won.

I was bloody annoyed at the umpiring. It was unforgivably over-officiated in a largely pro-Hawthorn manner. However, the lack of discipline shown by our captain and other leaders (e.g. Dixon) to not respond and adjust to the tone of umpiring annoyed me more. To see Boak remonstrating with Nicholls like he did at half-time gave me some inner warmth, but where was the captain's on-field response in the third quarter, when we were absolutely insipid? That mental distractability away from playing good, winning football has been a major and ongoing weakness for far too long.

C'mon you leaders, lead for crying out loud.

Jesus just looking at the numbers posted here has highlighted how ridiculous the umpiring is getting. It used to be 20-30 free kicks total for the game, both teams combined. Now it is very common to be anyway from 40 to 60, sometimes higher! That is just crazy and what is ruining the enjoyment for me.

Does anyone have any stats on average free kicks given per game, per year?

Over umpiring is something that suits the Hawks game plan. Stop start is what they like best, it’s how they play the game. Us on the other hand prefer free flowing. Soon as it’s stop start we get bottled up and can’t move the ball. Funny that 45 free kicks were given this game and we lost. Just a complete and utter farce and I’m still so mad.

In a game where 11 50m penalties were given for barely anything, how can chad not get one for Sicily clearly knocking the ball out of his hand.

Maybe if Nicholls hadn't umpired those games we would have won all 35. ;)

Raw statistics like that are as meaningless as frees for and against in assessing the performance of umpires.

Did anyone hear an umpire directing another umpire to watch Mitchell and make sure that he is not held in the coverage. Why is one player on the field their focus?

Because Alastair had a whinge to Gilbert and gave him the secret handshake.

The Age's Real Footy Podcast briefly discussed Saturday's umpiring. The consensus was that it is an attempt to clear congestion. Greg Baum's view was that supporters would just have to wear the occasional iffy too-high call resulting in a goal to the opposition.

I couldn't help but think if it was a Victorian team getting the worse of that kind of thing, there would be calls for a commission of inquiry and heads to roll. Also, the problem with that kind of decision from the umpires (if it was in fact made) is that it gives cover for the kind of unbalanced, inconsistent display we saw on Saturday. It also shows the corruption (in the original sense of the word) in the way the AFL is run and officiated. Amateurism of this kind should not be tolerated. And yet, without competition, it is.

It's not unusual. If an umpire is in control, and there's some scragging around the contest that they can't see, they'll ask one of the non-controlling umpires watch it. Extremely common. While there were some egregious errors that were upsetting, we lost because we were the worst side on the day, and played fairly insipid football for half the match.

This whole thread pisses me off, and I'm annoyed that I even opened it. Umpire bashing is pathetic at the best of times.
