Roast Umpiring: Corruption or Incompetence, or both

So in every year of Hinkley's reign we've had a negative FK differential and he still won't come out and do a Clarko on their sorry asses.

Also, lol at the Bullflogs 2016 FK differential of +112 - the highest in the table for a single season giving the AFL umpiring fraternity their one and only premiership.

i have been enjoying the umpiring this season, but that was against non vic teams with no crowds, throw in a crowd & a vic team and the fun starts. I have a theory re our home crowd too, i suspect our home crowds are so vocal & have decent footy knowledge that they get the umps offside, end of the 3rd the deliberate against westhoff where he did his best to keep the ball live but ran out of field, was the start of the umps big cheat push, then last was 5 frees straight to saints. Looks like either incompetence or cheating. Carlton had the run of the green the week before too.
Yeah I reckon the umps just get sick of being called out and say to each other "let's give these c***suckers something to moan about" and promptly give out a plethora of ridiculous decisions just to set them off.

Some of the calls the crowd boo'd last night were actually the correct decisions, but bloody hell there so many instances of two identical decisions within a minute or so of each other that went the opposite way depending on guernsey colour it was ridiculous.

Will await AFL apology for incompetence (ha ha).
And further apology for bias (bwahahahahahaha).

Not sure what quarter it was, but southern end, eastern side, one of their players ducked his head and then was tackled. Had his prior and it should have been holding the ball and umpire 5 looked at umpire 12 who was in the centre corridor almost asking if he should pay a free and umpire 12 shrugged his shoulders as if to say I don’t know and then number 5 called for a bounce.

Was a disgrace the players knew it was holding the ball, they remonstrated but to no avail

When players are actively arguing at break with the umps you know the umpiring is shit house

Love to know no 12 free kick ratio between teams and between fwd and back.

Ken is dead right. Umpiring and interpretations should not change within a season.

Last night was a joke. I have no doubt that if the free kick bias were around the other way, it would have equaled a 4/5 goal turnaround.

Anyway, The AFL should tell clubs how the interpretations will be before pre season. Then use the pre season games to bring in new rules/interpretations. should set the standard for the whole season so all clubs know what to expect.

There should be 10 or so more umpires on the books, their performance reviewed, and dropped if not on par. Actually, another great reason to have an AFL reserves to train umpires.

Umpire Performance needs to be judged, recorded better and made public. These stats should be live:

Free kicks missed and free kicks given
Free kicks for and against per club
Free kicks/lead to scoring opportunities

Free kicks missed and given, should be given as a differential and PUBLIC with umpires ranked/paid on performance.

Umpires should have to rank each club in their favourite to worst/who they support, and the AFL should ensure that they do not umpire games where bias may occur.

Lastly, it’s only a little bit the umpires fault, it’s actually the bullshit AFL who can’t get their shite together to create a fair competition. I mean they are a fricken circus.

We got the reaming from the umpires that we were all expecting after Ratten complained last week. It wasn't the reason we lost but it certainly didn't help.

It is unimaginable that in a professional sporting competition that has large scale legal gambling on its results such obvious umpiring bias is not investigated as match fixing.

Whats sad is how predictable last night was.

We deserved to lose, but the 'interpretations' all going the way of the complaining team is just such bush league sh*t.

Sack Gil and fire him in to the sun.

All of them at AFL house is stale.

McLachlan, Hocking, Auld, Christianson (don't give a shit if it's not the right spelling) etc...etc... the whole lot need to moved on.

Clubs should rate umpires, if you drop below a certain raking. You're done.

I swear that no 12 was Nichols wearing a wig of some sort.
only he could've been that bad and biased

The Westhoff deliberate call was correct and I’d argue the Membrey goal was not kicking in danger, but the sheer number of holding the man calls was ridiculous. Dixon regularly has 2 or 3 players dragging him down in a marking contest and it never gets paid. Jonas gets blocked from the contest by Ryder and they give it straight away.

May very well have been, if we go into the last 3-4 goals up, may be a very different result.

You get what you deserve. We're a weak club and we get treated as such by head office with everything ranging from umpiring to fixturing to guernsey debates.
Long over due that we stop being walked over, but that wont happen with Keith, Koch and Ken. Sooner they get cleared out and we get in hard asses that don't take shit the better.

This. In any performance industry transparency should be the norm. The argument that we don't want any public criticism because it will stop people wanting to be umpires is bullshit. Protecting them is worse because their performance is on public display yet their feedback is given behind closed doors which just gets people even more offside. It would be better to publicise their stats and ratings by their coaches and explain why they've been promoted to the firsts or dropped to the seconds. Stop trying to insulate them from criticism because it's not working anyway. The gagging of coaches by the AFL is analogous to how dissents are treated in authoritarian regimes, i.e. nothing to see here although the system is rotten to the core.

First Quarter – 11:47 – Wines not paid the "too high"
First Quarter – 10:26 – Gray not paid for hanging on
First Quarter – 9:50 – Free against Jonas + 50 for holding
First Quarter – 6:30 – Holding paid against Clurey/Jonas in front of goal
First Quarter – 3:02 – SPP not paid for being hung on to
First Quarter – 0:09 – Howard not paid for holding the ball

I’d chuck my whole salary on the $2.40 odds, and then will that team to win. Stick that to the AFL who cut half my pay for this season. 🤔

The worse call was the saint player sliding into a scrimmage and Ladhams getting called for a head high tackle. I thought that sliding into a scrimmage was banned. When the saint player started rubbing his head, out came the whistle for an obvious head high tackle.
The Westhoff decision was correct as he made no attempt to take the tackle that he obviously was going to get, so he just stepped over the line.
Edit. I hate to say it but Westy wimped out. Sometimes you got to take one for the team!

was 12 the dark haired young lad who got all flustered by the crowd early? I don't know his name but his incompetence shone bright all night, he paid some very soft technical frees in the marking/ contests and missed some howlers in general play, generally in favor of the saints of course
Andrew Stevens someone said. Never heard of him but he was behind the majority of terrible calls. Crucified us.
