Roast Umpiring: Corruption or Incompetence, or both

You're not allowed to complain or you get fined. You're not even allowed to complain on the field or you get a 50m penalty. The AFL is a dictatorship.

Someone with more intelligence and tact than Ken could get around this with ease.

People are complaining about the TJ one but he should have been smarter. The umpire behind him is looking for movement. If he had bobbed his head up and down rather than standing straight up there is no way that gets called as HTB. Its how that rule is adjudicated now.

We can argue all day as to whether that's the stupidest thing in the history of the world, but it was called as its been called for some time now.
No. There had been literally a dozen times we had wrapped up cats players (who were trying to create stoppages and slow down the game) and they made zero attempt during the game.

That call on Jonas would have been bad anytime, but I’m this game to the way geelong has been locking in the ball and making zero attempt all game it was outrageous.

The time to complain wasn't last night.
It was the 2013 Semi, against the Roos in Hobart during umpire appreciation round, against Carlton in 15/16, the Dixon shot clock debacle, thr Shuey duck, and a multitude of other times.
We'll have a little cheeky dig about it at an AGM and nothing will change.

Were they standing straight up with their back to the umpire making the call?

Which of the dozen times are you referring too?

There was a great one (parfitt I think) when he dived on the ball and looked like he was taking a nap and dozed off.

The cats gameplan last night was clearly, don’t let the ball get out of stoppages, don’t let port players get into space.

I'm pointing this part out. This is TJ, just standing upright. The umpire making the call coming in from the red arrow says "No genuine attempt to get rid of it":

Do I think some umpires are biased? Absolutely. Do we get some shocking calls? Absolutely.

But the reality is that the directions given to umpires in the AFL is probably the most bush league shit of any major sporting organisation on the planet. Never give them an excuse. TJ should have known better and with a head bob this call doesn't go against us.

I've thought for a while that the premiership team plays the best under the ruleset for the year. Think Hawthorn 2014, Bulldogs 2016, Richmond 2019. It's not about getting a run with the umpires, it's learning what you can get away with and what they won't punish you for and building a gameplan around it.

Geelong are masters at it, hence why we've been ****ed in the dying moments of many games.

More recently the AFL has changed the ****ing definition of a handball so you can now throw it by propelling with your body in line with what the Bulldogs are doing this year.

Bush league shit.

Bush league sh*t.

Exactly this is what I'm saying. Everyone agrees the situation is idiotic, but the champions focus on what they can control.

what was the one with about two minutes to go and one of our blokes took a mark at the top of the goal square and could have got us to a goal down and they called a free kick to geelong
....what was that for i couldnt see a free kick anywhere...that was blatant cheating by the umps that killed any chance we had left.

Was that the one where Ollie was dragged down from behind?

If the umpire couldn't even see the ball then he shouldn't have made the call. View clearly obstructed. If in doubt, call a ball up.

What Jonas needed to do was pretend he was attempting to get the ball out by repeatedly punching it into his stomach. Because as we have seen, bad acting = genuine attempt.

The Selwood one early on where he ducked his head and just ran at three tacklers, was pinned not once, but twice, then threw the ball on the ground, for a play on set the tone for the one-way interpretation.

There was another one later where he was caught with the ball, brought to ground and pinned for a longer three count than a WWE title bout and managed to hand the ball to a teammate, play on.

Danger too...

The umpires seem so terrified to ever ping a "name" player that they get an additional 5 seconds or so every single time.

What was the one paid late in the last when Mitch marked it about 45 out but they took it off him? They said they'd take a look at it but obviously we never saw a replay.

They called Wines for dragging a defender down which is bizarre as Wines had front position and scientifically, it is almost likely that Wines was the one that actually got dragged down.

You're not allowed to complain or you get fined.

Other coaches cop the fine. Ken won't. Doesn't want to waste his moolah on something unrelated to him.

Yeah he fell backward with Blitzroid behind him getting the free. May have been for a block interpretation but I thought umpire called holding. The one before was Mitch's mark, but apparently he forearmed the Geelong player in the throat I believe.

This board would pay the fine for him if he actually did it lol.

But I'm in two minds. There's a favour and vendetta system in sports.

I truly believe that if you go hard at umpires publicly, it will sit in their minds and they will look to go hard at you the next time they umpire your game

And in reverse, we saw it in the Richmond finals, Hardwick revealed post game that he thanked the umpire on their plane ride to Adelaide and ofc they get the favourable whistle. Same case in our game Vs St Kilda when they called Ratten and apologised to him before our match Vs them... What happened? You guessed it, we got an umpiring reaming.

Was it Parfitt who spear tackled Farrell? That should have been reported on the spot. Even the NRL has stamped that out.

Geelong FC 2021 represent everything that is wrong with contemporary football.

In all my years of watching I have never seen a side so focused on setting out to win games of football by not actually taking the game on and playing football.

They are a blight on the sport.
