Roast Umpiring: Corruption or Incompetence, or both

Maybe I haven't watched enough of the Camries, but I'm not convinced yet its some sort of anti-SA thing. The Crows play a style of football that is very in your face and they have a bunch of undisciplined players from what I have seen.

Similar to Richmond in their 3peat it wouldn't surprise me if they are pushing the envelope to get wins, which will legitimately mean you get on the wrong end of free kick counts.

Cornes claims anti-SA bias, right on cue the Pies get absolutely reamed in that last quarter by several umpiring howlers. Nuts on so many levels. As has been long pointed out it goes well past free kick counts, the ones not paid or inconsistently applied can hurt on the scoreboard and also hurt mentally. I mean they hurt me mentally, I'm sure our players are more professional about it than I am

Umpiring is often about spirit and momentum. We are neither a big, popular club nor a small, underdog club. We're just an unfashionable irrelevancy. So we're never anyone's idea of the type of team that the footy world really want to see do well. That plays into things.

The most alarming thing is that we don't even get the home town umpiring that other similar clubs such as Freo seem to enjoy at least occasionally. We instead get the often noted determination to not be swayed by the home crowd.

I don't think this is ever something that will change for us, it's just an additional obstacle that we need to overcome.

The Crows have always been looked after at home. I don't think you can point to any kind of recent bias their way.

I think the umpiring has been woeful but Port imho are deadset dumb in giving away critical free kicks.

Well I watch the end of the Fremantle v North Melbourne game and see the ball was at least a metre out of bounds when the siren goes and the call goes North's way.

A couple years ago a Carlton player gets to kick an after the siren goal from a very dodgy free then get given 5 or so metres on the mark by the umpire and changes another result.

There are a queue of these occurrences.

Agree unfortunately. I also think umpires are much more exposed to subtle, or in most cases not so subtle, messaging these days due to social media & the large number of footy shows. They are influenced by these & umpire accordingly. It's led to a drop in integrity which has been seen right across work places over the last 10 years in particular.

It's just a non-stop issue. The club has not been pro-active enough to address this in the sanfl either. A strong confident figure would have sorted it out years ago. If you act like you're 2nd class that's how you will be treated.

When we were playing the Saints, I noticed we got a couple of free against for chopping the arms which I hadn't noticed before in previous games

There were pretty ticky touchy and when I saw the first one I thought we were in for a harder night if they start calling those ones as well especially since they are usually given 30 metres in front of goal.

Opposed to this, Rozee was in front and he thought he touched the ball and the Saints player was awarded the mark. I don't think we saw another angle to tell but Rozee was pretty strong that he had touched the ball.

Well all the Monday footy shows came and went and umpiring over the weekend didn't even cause a ripple. Interesting when 2 games were won by a point and ours was won by 7. Which means fans of 3 teams thought they lost because of the umpires and 3 thought their wins were made unneccessarily hard by the umpires.

Someone may have said it already but with Horne-Francis being a Victorian Villian, it adds to that spirit and free kick woes.

I think he got a few more good calls against the Saints but before that, he almost seemed to be pinned for not much.
