Something Tiger71 said on last week's podcast (I only listened to it today) got me thinking. Against the Swans we lost by 45 and the frees by 10. Port Adelaide we lost the match by 2 and the free kicks by 10. Against the Demons we lost the match by 34 and the frees by 7. Against the cats we lost the match by 63 and the frees by 10. Against the Lions we lost by 28 and the frees by 12. Is there a correlation here? Not at all... well not until you take into account the following round. Below is the list of losses with the following round (match result/free kick result):
Round 3: Loss/Loss (Sydney)
Round 4: Loss/Loss (Port Adelaide)
Round 5: Win/Loss (St Kilda)
Round 6: Loss/Loss (Melbourne)
Round 7: Win/Win (Western Bulldogs)
Round 8: Loss/Loss (Geelong)
Round 9: Win/Loss (Greater Western Sydney)
Round 10: Loss/Loss (Brisbane)
Round 11: Win/Win (Adelaide)
What I am getting at is I think the club is privately into the AFL regarding the umpiring decisions. We have to take into account that we are going to be on the wrong end of the ledger the majority of times. What stands out to me is the free kick win against both Adelaide and the Dogs (how often do they lose the free kick count???) came after what we as a supporter group thought was a poorly umpired match the week before. There is an anomaly (there usually is in these things) - the match against GWS was a pretty poorly umpired match but we won so even if the club did question the adjudication of decisions I feel they would have been told to go away because we won. Same goes with the St Kilda match - we lost the frees by plenty but flogged them so probably didn't bother questioning anything (I can't remember if the umpiring was poor or not - free kick count doesn't tell you that).
So, to sum up, I think the club has agreed the umpiring has been poor and I think they have been quietly into the AFL about it.
