I felt a sense of confusion how we were quite competitive in the first quarter of the match last night against the Hawks, yet somehow were trailing by 5 goals late into that first quarter?!
After going through the first quarter match replay, I now can see why:

1. @10:00, Berry tackled a Hawks player, he had full opportunity to dispose of the ball, and chose to get the full swing tackle, without disposing off the ball. “Dangerous tackle”, was the call, or perhaps a good tackle gone unrewarded?

2. @12:33, Keays at the centre stoppage, got caught HTB, without any prior opportunity. Interesting to note that the commentators all seemed surprised by the call.

3. @20:15, Dawson tackled a Hawks player, who immediately drops the ball (illegal disposal), and Dawson got called “holding the man”.

4. @22:46, a Hawks player had taken the mark, a Hawks team mate tried to run through the protected zone for a quick handball receive, Taylor chased after the Hawks player also ran through the protected zone, a dinky 50m penalty resulted.

5. @26:16, at the centre bounce, both rucks were seemingly going for a ruck contest, and ROB got pinned for “blocking” the opposition ruck. Really?

6. @27:58, at a stoppage, Curtin was tackled with one arm pinned, and without prior, was caught HTB.

4 of the first umpiring calls in the above resulted in a goal chain for the Hawks. The ROB free against was an easy momentum assist from the midfield, and the Curtin free was a potential 6-goal lead for the Hawks. That could have been a game-killer right there had the Hawks player converted for goal.

Were we just playing like chumps in that first quarter, or was it a case of the biased umps?
Flashbacks of Pannell anyone?

I think playing this game will do nothing but torture yourself. I haven’t watched the replay yet. Not sure if I will, but seem to feel the pressure applied by the Hawks in that first quarter led to us making forced errors. Every time we had the ball there was a hawks player making us work fast. Maybe it was a bit of everything.
