great thread all, some nice thoughts -

I find it interesting that Cox is held up as a reference . Cox was a Rookie and as I have mentioned before , I feel we should carry a Rookie ruckman at all times. The ruck is a high wear position and we ahould have more options on our list than we currently have.A Rookie allows us to give a kid an extra 2 years before making the list , West may as well be a Rookie he seems 2 seasons away min.

agree with your thoughts here Turbocat :thumbsu: Paul Chambers eventually earnt a run our senior list after showing his willingness to learn on the rookie list ...

as for our selections :

1st round - I'd love to see a bit of grunt and skill added to our midfield in the form of Albert Proud, his disposal is good and he has a nice tough streak - could be a better version of Josh Carr ... I reckon Mitchell Thorp is a chance to slide to our pick and it would be interesting to see if we selected him ... Jack Riewoldt appeals as the kind of player that we'd hoped Charlie Gardiner would develop into - as for Selwood, I'd be reluctant to see us select a player with an injury cloud over them two years running (Varcoe, and as it turned out Owen), although I'm sure he'll have undertaken every possible medical test prior to the draft ...

2nd round - Dane Avery appeals as a good mover and effective ball user from the back half. Brock O'Brien could add some starch to the backline if he's still available. There's been some talk that Leigh Adams may only be rookie listed, but he's a fierce little competitor; I could easily see him becoming the next Steven Baker and a future leader of the club - we could grab him with our 2nd pick or wait and see if he fell to our 4th round pick. Shaun Grigg and Jackson Sheringham also have their assets that we could do with.

3rd round - :D

4th round - Rhyce Prismall. Leigh Adams if he's still around.

If we were to get Sellar where would you play him?

I'd like to see him developed into a forward more than anything. He actually reminds me alot of Adam Goodes, so he could be the sort of utility type too. Probably would take some time though.

I've seen alot of Brad Ottens comparsions. I really don't know where people see Ottens in him. Alot more athletic, alot more agile and won't be as tall as Ottens.

From what I've seen he just has loads of talent to burn. My only quiery is that he may be a bit of a confidence player. Would need to get that out of him while he is young.

The other thing is that there's fair a chance he won't be available when around Geelong's first pick.

Bomber has already stated that drafting players that can run and carry is the priority this year. Expect him to go for Jetta/Proud with first pick and Connors/Houlli with second pick.

If we trade for more picks I think he may be after Moss/Hurley/Collard who will all be picks 13-30.

Why on earth then has Wojja been dropped?? He's pretty much the only guy in the current side who is doing exactly that! Maybe not perfectly, but at least having a crack!

We are sitting at 8th position but I think we will slip down to 7th, leaving us with the 7th pick in the upcoming draft and also around pick 25 as well.
Then Hawkins with our third pick.

What are we looking to take in the draft?
Players around the pick 7 mark are expected to be are:

Matthew Luenberger- 203cm Ruckmen with very good skills and great mobility been playing very good football in the WAFL and made all australian at the championships.

Albert Proud- Powerful Midfielder from Queensland with good pace and a good penetrating left foot.

Leroy Jetta- Quick and Agile midfielder/forward from WA All Australian last two years is reasonably small but is lightning quick and has great footballing ability.

Jack Reiwoldt- Cousin of Nick 193cm KPP player who has been getting some very good numbers for tasmania in recent times, has great mobility and a good set of hands above his head.

One of Joel Selwood/James Sellar may slip to our pick as well I would take Selwood who is a Luke Ball type player good skills good in close with good speed. I have queries over James Sellar though seems a bit to Patrick Ryder for me, played ruckmen most of time but will be to short to play ruck in AFL and isnt up to playing KPP (would take Leunberger over him.)

Who to take out of that group if Selwood does not slip?
I would say we need a ruckmen Blake looks alright, King cant run out a game and we cant trust him to be out on the park every week and Ottens is best suited to the forward line, Leunberger is as good ruck prospect in the draft since Josh Fraser and will develop in to the teams number 1 ruckmen already beating 209cm ruckmen in the WAFL and also matching it with smaller ruckmen around the groud as well, can kick goals as well.

Leroy Jetta would add some class and flair that we lack in our midfield, has all the tricks that alot of aboriginal boys do and also has the ability to get 30 touches in a game as well, or you could chuck him down forward and he can kick you 5 goals.

Leroy Jetta is extremely over rated... he wont ever kick 5 goals in an AFL game an definately never rack up 30 possies... iv seen alot of him play an i would definately not waste a first round pick on him... hes a selfish, over confident player an tries to do wayyy too much an stinks it up... cant b good for the mighty GFC!!

brock o'brien from WA would b a great prospect for the cats, if i wer to compare him with a catter id say rooke, but more class... an in an under player who started at league level for peel thunder wen he was just 16... one to watch and definately worth a 2nd round pick..

Some APS boys could go alight for us

Schofield, Rockerfeller, Djerrkura, Dawes, Sandilands, Gilchrist, Tregear, Comben and Shaw. Most of these blokes could be rookie listed.

We might just have to be happy with Hawkins though.

What is the fascination with Prismall? Is it because we already have his brother?

I haven't seen that much of him, but from what I have seen he looks like just another of those in-between sized forwards that we keep picking up but generally turn out to be duds - Garth, Haynes, Gardiner being the prime examples.

I would much rather go for perhaps a smaller bloke with all the skills and speed, like a Djerkurra or Adams.

Couldn't agree with you more. Jetta is not quite what we need. I have thrown up Connors a couple of times. Do you think he has the class to warrant taking with our first pick? Would love to get him with our second but he won't last that long.

I like Connors.

Legitimately skillfull (not the throwaway rubbish you hear from every recruiting barnyard these days), has pace, versatility, and is a handy size. A general consensus may not agree, but I'd look very hard at him before the likes of Jetta.

Today’s news is rather distressing. It really does show how fickle plans for the future can be. . We now can not trade or delist this man , he has laid his body on the line and a paid a price for the Hoops , he may yet retire , if so we must do best to take care of him but whether Lonergan plays on or retires it will effect what we do with this draft now.

Spencer is now our only backup tall in the backline. We may have to look at a youngish tall like Ben Ried to prepare for the future perhaps others like MacKenzie or young Everitt or maybe Prismall might be considered especially as they seem very happy with his brother

To do this may require us being even more positive in trades to get an extra pick or 2 in the top 30. Maybe a P pick from Carlton or Essendon as Ried seems likely to be a Pick around 20 odd. So who could we say has marketability as well being a player who although valuable we can rejig and do without.

Kelly , a talented mid who although has been down in form would still have appeal to certain clubs as he does to our own. I just not sure Corey, Ling , Bartel and Kelly all fit in the same side. I also think if we did trade a player like this we have a back like Koola who could do a job for us if we have injuries.

Enright , a reliable mid turned halfback. My reservations on him based on his very average disposal and , unlike Dasher , a player who doesn’t really have the skillset to play on a taller player. In this sense his role could be played by Mackie who has far better foot skills.

Kingsley , a poor year this year , a form drop that may have several issues attached to it but has a track record that would be taken into account by other teams who have either been on the end of his best or is looking for a medium forward. Id think the Bullies or Richmond could both think they could get more out of him than we have.

David Johnson , Has done nothing wrong that I’m aware of but as a structural rejig occurs he could well be a player we may think could have value as a plug and play type and could be replaced in our side by a young up and comer like Gamble.

Lets not get to ahead of our selves here. Sammy Newman had his kidney removed in his first 75 games. Also Don't forget Mooney can go down back. Also if we had to pick a defended, wouldn't we rather Mackenzie, if still around over Reid.

I dont wish him ill, and maybe it is pre-emptive but footy is not an ideal game for soemone with 1 Kidney. As far as Sam , Im no doctor but Im under the impression that he lost part of one of his kidney not a full removal of one.

As far as Mooney goes , Im not yet ready to count on him to be a defender. To me he best when focusing on the ball either on ball or as a forward.

Mc or Ried. Mc is certainly closer to being ready but sort of reminds me of Spencer a bit however Ried is very bottom aged and more upside IMO. Go the talent and wait , it pays off in the end.
