Dallas is a pretty boring place imo . . The School book depository building is a must do ,(the only reason we went to dallas was to stand on the grassy knoll) . It is set up as it was the day JFK was shot , they even have a rifle leaning against the window Oswald alledgedly fired the shots from .

Can i ask why you've chosen Dallas as a destination ? Seems like you don't really want/need to go there .

Maybe head over to Fort Worth , it's about an hour away and full of wild west type attractions . C&W music bars , Rodeos etc if you like that sort of stuff . It's more interesting than Dallas imo .

I assumed he was talking about stopping off for several days then picking up the trip again without paying for two separate flights. These are doable.

You are right in that most flights tend to go to LAX and then back to Hawaii, but webjet gives some 0 stop options and a 1 stop option that isn't LAX. I've looked for the same myself and actually done the LAX to Hawaii and back to LAX before flying home horror trip so was pleasantly surprised to find these webjet options today without it being double the price.
Yes the plan is to get a stopover flight in hawaii simply so it is possible to get a 1 way flight from lax to hawaii 2 or 3 days before the return flight and then get on the return flight when it returns.

I think this is the cheaper option from memory, I did look at a lot of options but this was 2 or 3 months ago my memory is faded

Help/Advice needed please.

I am planning on going to the US in mid to late august for about 3 to 3 and a half weeks, having never been i need some advice.
I will be travlling alone for the whole trip.
This is my plan so far (very early plan) Fly into New York spend between 7-9 nights there with possibly overnight trips to Boston and Chicago via train from NY.
Then fly to Vancouver from New York for possibly 2 nights.
From there fly to LA and spend 1-2 nights in LA, 3 nights in Vegas and 1-2 in either San Fran or San diego (or both) and then fly back to Melbourne from LA.

Does this sound reasonable? Am i missing anything obvouis?
Note i wont be hireing a car so will be public transport and internal flights to get around.

Is Vancouver worth it?

Thanks.

Vancouver is worth it but two nights by flying in and out - given it's the entry point for the Rockies, you ain't doing it justice. Would suggest you do the Vancouver as a separate trip another time and then spend a couple weeks in Vancouver, Seattle and the Rockies. Easy to do the Rockies and the Northwest corner in a car and have done it a number of times.

Would be better to spend more time in San Fran.

New York time of 7-9 days should give you a good taste and its easy to get round. There are regular flights and trains between New York and Boston.

Always love Vegas but that's me (with minimal gambling). It's the best and worst of the USA in one place.

Oh really? the grassy knolls will be good but that sucks about everything else. Was told that Texas is a must see by a mate who had been. Looked at the map and Dallas had the bigger population than Austin so chose Dallas just thought there might be more happening. Kinda wishing we were going Austin now...ohwell

If you really want to see New Orleans, I dont think you need any more than 3 nights there, which would leave time for New York and 1 other city, maybe Chicago. If your on that side of that side of the country, I would recommend these 2 cities as the best.

If your not fussed, San Francisco is the best city in America for mine. San Francisco, LA (do all the touristy stuff) and Vegas would fit 2.5 week comfortably.

So, would an itenerary of 4-5 days LA, 2 days San Fran, 1-2 days Vegas, 2 days New Orleans and 4-5 days New York be a do-able, or is that too many places fit into a tight schedule? Also, are internal flights within US fairly cheap and regular like I would assume?

Think your mate might have been meaning Austin, Texas... a good college town, progressive and plenty of girls that love Australian accents.

Or so I have been told.

ive just booked myself a trip to the US this march/april flying in and out of LA. ive got 30 days and am struggling to work out an itinerary! sooo much i want to do.

3 days in LA
6 days in san fran which will include a trip to Lake Tahoe
1/2 days at yosimite np is pretty tempting
im planning on a week in NY (ive got black keys/arctic monkeys tickets at maddison square garden).
really keen on getting to Austin texas and las vegas!

My main dilemma is I've booked a ticket to a yankees vs mets game in tampa, florida but im not sure whether there is much to do there. is it worth staying a few days there for the baseball or am i robbing myself of the chance to spend an extra day in texas or somewhere else real cool?

i figure it will be spring break over there and im keen to party and get amongst it. has anyone got any clues as to the hot spots within the united states? atm im thinking miami might be the go.. dont really want to venture out to cancun or tijuana.

cheers

I have friends in Tampa who I have previously stayed with. I'd recommend that you go to the baseball and then go to either Orlando (for Disney World / Universal if that type of thing appeals to you) or head to Miami if you want to check out the best of Florida. Tampa itself isn't a bad area but it's just not as vibrant as what you could be looking for on your break.

Tampa, at least to me, was a nice "quiet" break from working.

cheers wickz. problem solved. in and out of tampa in a day i guess. altho i could be due for a rest once i reach florida, which'll be about day 22 of the trip i think..

Yeh you could do it. Maybe do an extra night in San Fran and only 4 in LA. Ive been to San Fran twice, once for 4 nights and once for 5 nights and both times only just managed to do everything, with each day being pretty full on.

LA- 4 nights
San Fran- 3-4 nights min
Vegas- 2 nights
New Orleans- 2 nights
New York- 5 nights

Flights are reasonably regular, I am actually in the middle of booking a trip with a few flights within America and was surprised that there isnt more to choose from withing a reasonable price frame. I suggest to book early so you get the cheaper flights at the time you want, also try Frontier Airlines. I have never flown with them but they are pretty cheap and am gonna give them a go this time.

A mate who caddies on the US PGA Tour swears that the two biggest party cities in the Southern USA are Oxford, Mississippi and Athens, Georgia - both crazy college party towns (Ole Miss and University of Georgia).

Miami would be huge I would think.

For anyone going to Vegas, 3 days is not long enough.

I just got back (like 2 hours ago) and went to Vegas and you need a minimum of 4 nights.

We had 3 nights and didn't see very much. Once you decide what you and where you want to go and then get their, a fair bit of your time has gone. It's a crazy arse city.

We did the Grand Canyon skywalk (whole day trip is needed) on one day (5 am till 10 pm), some shopping at the outlet malls (everything is as cheap as - $250 Nike shoes go for $50), a show and then looking around and we only got to New York New York and the luxor in 3 days.

It's busy, it's crazy busy that city but a s**t load of fun. :thumbsu:

Looking at doing Europe (UK, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, France, et el) next Christmas/new year period. What sort of cost will premium economy or even business class cost me?

20 hours in the back seats of economy is going to kill me.

The first time I went I did the bus trip, it's a bloody big day in a bus and it's good to see the country and you can go on the skywalk (which wasn't there when I last went), but it's just too far. Am going back in June but this time am going to do a flight over, which only takes up 4 hours of the day, leaving the rest of the day to do stuff.

Pretty good value by the looks!

Just booked a studio apartment in Manhattan for 2 weeks. Wasn't as expensive as I thought it would be.

Edit - Actually scrap that just found out the place is a hole. Lucky I can get out of it.

About to book for late june/july. Looking like being a couple of nights in LA, then a couple in SF, then 5 nights in Vegas, 4 nights in Austin, a few in NEw Orleans, a couple in Miami and then 5 in NY.

Would love to somehow sneak Seattle, Memphis/Nashville, San Diego, Chicago, Boston in there, but it's pretty rushed as is.

Completely agree. We had two days, three nights really and did not do the Grand Canyon. Only really covered half the strip and failed to go into many of the casinos along the way. Outlet shopping was great and I have a couple of pairs of those Nikes to tide me over until next time I go back. Quality shoes for sure.

Time just gets away on you really. It wasn't such a big deal walking the strip at night but during the day you line up for buses or the monorail and everything is spread out. Amazing how little you can get to during the time you have.

I have to go back next time just to see Fremont Street and the northern end of the strip.

You could spend a full day just exploring each casino if you wanted to. I never even got out to see our pool (except from our room), let alone swim or relax by one. We were pretty tired and jaded by this stage of our trip though.

I went in October for 8 days (just to Vegas), and that was barely enough! Looking to head back in the next 24 months. Did manage to step into (and lose money in) most casinos but there was still a few things I would have liked to have done but didn't get the chance.

Also, spewing that I didn't discover the buffet at the Luxor until my 6th day.

Hmm, I stayed at the Luxor but didn't eat there. Didn't find any glowing reviews. I went to buffets at the Hilton and the Rio which is the largest buffet in Vegas. Both were great.

I don't need it, but I am so upset that we don't have Boston Cream Pie over here.

Will be in Vegas in June . Any recommendations on where to stay ?
The wife has her heart set on the bellagio which is fine by me , it's in a great position on the strip but those fountains may get a bit annoying after a couple of days (staying for 8 days) .
Stayed at the Flamingo before (09) and the Luxor (94) . The new Aria looks nice as does the Venetion .
