Salisbury hit Greg Anderson in '83?

There was the other incident too I think, which was a minor round game in '86.

Would be intetesting to know what year Bomber's article was written...my guess would be '85....bit surprised he didnt have Kym Klomp in his team, although his well known exploits may not have started until mid/late 80s.

Tom Thorn from West Adelaide, was another one not listed in the team, but who I remember having a bit of a reputation at the Tribunal.
He's got his years wrong. We didn't play finals in 83. Salisbury's cowardly assault on Anderson was in 86, the final played a couple of days before he won the Magarey Medal

Ah, that failing memory! I could have sworn that the 77 grand final game was his last after getting reported and suspended. But by “disappearing” after his final year he was abble to cultivate a legend that us oldies can relate to the younger fans.
Once again relying on my memory I think Bruce trained to become a teacher after football and specialised with kids from Minda.

I had an expatriate Canadian who was a teacher at my high school. A big red haired former lumberjack.

We asked him one day which footy team he followed and he said Port because he was at teachers college with Bruce Light.

At the televised count when Ando was presented with the medal the host Kevin Crease said That looks better around your neck than Scott Salisbury. :D

A riverland lad from memory. My memories are of his speed at alberton oval to gather in an opponent. I can recall that he off field was a private person. Look forward to an acknowledgment vision maybe on game day of a port adelaide competitor.

Strange that there's been nothing about Bruce's passing on the PAFC web site, Adelaide Now, or various Port related twitter accounts (eg Kochie, John Cahill). Big Footy is the only place I've seen anything, although someone has updated this wiki page. Maybe they're all waiting for Bruce's family to make an announcement.

WHat! Surely you are thinking of big Dennis?
Neil was dirty as ... i met him a few years ago and he was a thorough gentleman. I reminded him how dirty he was!
I still remember watching the VFL highlights when he was made a quadriplegic... devastating but he overcome his disability amazingly well.
There you go. Selective memory.

They talked about it on the 5AA sports show someone calledd in about him and Daniel Norton confirmed it all. When the club does these releases they are usually a couple of days after the players passing and have funeral details and/or memorial details if something happens at the club. The club probably doesn't have this info from the family yet.

The only source Ive seen it on (apart from this thread) is a Waikerie FB page.

This one? - it's hard to find any action shots of Bruce via google!

There are 3 tributes to Bruce in the death notices today and 1 has a photo of Bruce. There are no funeral arrangements yet as the one from his wife and kids says to watch future editions for funeral details. I suspect once the club knows what they are, they will put something up on their website.

Reckon Bruce Light returned to Taperoo High School as a late age student to complete his secondary studies, before continuing to train as a teacher.
Imagine sitting next to that phenomenon in class.

Yeah, I'd heard that too from a guy who taught there at the time.

Explosive, skillful and not just tough but Port Adelaide tough. It's what made him such a good player, and one of my favourites. Nothing better to see than Bruce running down the wing burning off opponents then hitting a player on the lead.

Taken way too soon.

Big booming kick on him too. One of my early favourite players.

Gone far too soon. RIP LEGEND

I have memories of Bruce running thru the corridor as much as I have of him running down the wing. He wasn't some skinny bloke out so wide he could do the boundary umpiring duties like many wingmen have over the years.

I remember him as a cross between Butcher and Josh Carr.
Was always my favourite player.

Farewell #26

I hope the club puts some footage together for our first home game.
Was thinking about this over the weekend and the best combo of modern players is that he had the cult status of Butcher, the speed of Matt White and the hardness of Ollie Wines.

Yes the club has said - Port Adelaide will honour Light’s memory and outstanding contribution at Adelaide Oval in Round 1.

And he walked away from the sporting spotlight to teach kids with physical and intellectual disabilities. It makes me think of that Herb Elliot quote i put in the Why Community thread the other day.
