Coincidence that he was spoken to by police earlier on the day? Are we to assume self afflicted? Very sad either way.

Love-Hated Peter Roebuck, at times he was a bore, at times he was insightful, but he was always one of the best writers.

Couldn't agree more. A talented if occasionally lazy columnist. Always worth reading though because he was better than average.

Wow......Rest In Peace Peter. Altho most never always agreed with him, his thoughts were always interesting and better than a lot of the bland rubbish you often see. Agree with SJs assessment. RIP.

Very sad news. At times, an insightful observer of the game. He was also someone who could write well too.

This is such gut churning news. Agree with this Jimmy. We were just listening to him on Friday. It's South Africa so anything is possible.

I didn't always agree with his assessments and calls to drop/keep certain players but he was a good writer and explained his point of view very well.

no cause of death mentioned, doesn't sound good.

big loss to the cricket world, like others said, other than the Sydney Test debarcle was an excellent commentator and writer.

This is awful news.

I really enjoyed both listening to Peter on Grandstand and for that matter any cricket commentary, and thoroughly enjoyed his articles in The Age, his insight was always welcome and he was always a very interesting person to listen to. He'd had plenty of controversy even going back to his time as captain of Somerset and from memory giving the big A to a West Indian cricketer in the mid 80's....i think Botham and his great friend and team-mate Viv Richards never forgave him for that.

But a tragedy that he has died so young, almost of similar age to Bob Woolmer who died a few years ago in a Pakistani hotel. He will be greatly missed by all who follow cricket.

Cant believe the short memories of some on here, particularly regarding the bile Roebuck spewed during that 06/07 Australia V India series....you would think he was the greatest scribe in the history of cricket from some of the comments thus far.

The least we owe the dead is the truth, so lets not sugar coat the man.

Perhaps a little sensitivity in the immediate aftermath would do good.

Plenty of time to rake over the entrails in days and weeks to come - and in threads not entitled "Vale".

Re: Peter Roebuck is dead

I can't believe it, such sad news. I've always loved reading his articles even though I didn't necessarily agree with his opinions. It is such a great loss to everyone in both the media and cricketing circles. RIP.

I really hope people refrain from besmirching his name ITT.

This.

I was a fan until that Summer, after that, I couldn't stand him.

Sad to see him pass away; will be interesting to see the truth come out.

Apart from that rubbish, which harmed his reputation greatly in my eyes at least, generally I didn't have an issue with his views.

In the immediate aftermath of his death, I don't think it hurts to be measured in your comments. There is plenty of time for stronger views later on.
