Joffaboy goes boom.

Sherb, not celebrating his death, but the guy was easily and justifiably disliked by a lot of people; for valid reasons.

i will avoid a red card for reasons which no doubt will be known soon enough

i guess he'll only be tried in the court of public opinion now

really liked him, favourite cricket person in media.

and then i discovered more about his complex character

death is never a good thing, I don't wish it upon many people at all.

life is fragile, we should work tirelessly to making others peoples lives happier I guess

Im sure more will Come Out on his Life

fine contributions and all other failings

i think wiki is wrong calling these 19yr olds "boys". 19 is a man

however, like many are hinting, clearly he was a troubled human being, aside from a marvellous commentator

Assault conviction

In 1999, while working as a commentator abroad,[where?] Roebuck met three young cricketers, all aged 19, and offered to coach them, inviting them to live at his home in England. He warned them beforehand that he would use corporal punishment if they failed to obey his "house rules". He caned all three boys on their buttocks at different times for misbehaviour and in 2001 was given a suspended jail sentence after pleading guilty to three charges of common assault. He told the court, "Obviously I misjudged the mood and that was my mistake and my responsibility and I accept that."[2]

This.

I was a fan until that Summer, after that, I couldn't stand him.

Sad to see him pass away; will be interesting to see the truth come out.
He was a good writer, always read his stuff and usually spot on. He had a troubled personal life but I'm sure that will all come out in the future or maybe not. I know he was in trouble about 10 years ago for certain things he'd done and maybe he just couldn't handle all that again.

Wow did not see that coming after listening to him on Friday night.

I thought he was the best commentator in the media.

A big loss to the ABC.

RIP Peter

We didnt always like he what he wrote but even his India series articles which riled our's and the authorities moods he wasn't writing puff pieces to sell papers. He wrote what he thought even if it pissed people off and we didn't like agree with what he wrote.

That I alwyas respected, a strong view even when it annoyed the authorities or the masses.

I think there are going to be some sad issues that we here about in the coming days and some things were not going to like about him. But reading about him it appears this also can be put down to his personality, where his father it would seem would use pain to teach the young Peter a lesson. Sometimes that effects personality too.

Didn't really agree with too many of his colums, but I really enjoyed his radio commentary. A loss to the game of cricket.

What Peter wrote upset so many Australians because it was very (maybe too) close to the truth. He never wrote for the masses, looking for pats on the back - he wrote what he believed and I appreciated it.

There is nothing worse - nothing - than picking up the paper and hearing how Ponting has the 'runs on the board' and will decide when he retires. Someone needs to tell the truth and he was one of them. It makes people turn off cricket as it is doing as we speak. Poor journalism that is Australian biased has turned many off the game at the moment.

He had his faults. But jeez he had a uniqueness in his field as well

Agree with this,

RIP

Sad news. Will make following cricket this summer a less enjoyable experience.

A lot of people are hanging him out to dry because of his article after 'that' Sydney test - he later admitted in print that he'd gone too far in the article, yet people still can't get over it, forgive and forget. Must've touched a sore spot uncomfortably close to the truth.

That's why he was so good.

True. Likely there will also be a lot of BS that comes out now that he's passed too.

Questionable backdrop aside, it's said news. Surprised at the amount of dislike towards him. I liked his commentary generally and even if I didn't' agree with everything he wrote/said, he was by far one of the more intelligent commentators going around and generally made a good case for whatever he was going on about.

Which part? When he called for Ricky Ponting and Andrew Symonds to quit or be sacked?

Peter got it wrong then.

He got it wrong more times than he got it right.

Ask Ian Botham, Viv Richards nad Joel Garner.

I am going to miss him on the radio more than anything else. Intelligent and at times provocative- I always paid attention when he came on to talk and he was my favorite commentator.
I don't know why he thought that this was the only action available to him but no doubt there will be more to come on this.

Police confirmed it was suicide. Very sad news and his commentary on ABC this summer will be missed. RIP

"This office can confirm that an incident occurred last night at about 21:15 at a hotel in Claremont where a 55-year-old British national who worked as an Australian commentator committed suicide," the statement said. "The circumstances surrounding this incident is being conducted. An inquest docket has been opened for investigation."

He was clearly a loner and an outsider. And in the world today, outsiders are barely tolerated especially when you are talking the "Club Australia" cricket set-up.

I thought his articles were erudite, hard hitting and quite often ahead of the curve. Calling for Ponting's head was what we all thought but everyone was too gutless to say it... And that call stands true today as it was in 08 was it when he made it. Ponting has done nothing but put pressure on the people around him since before that time (look at his stats too vis a vis Kallis and Tendulkar for eg or Lara's last couple of years)... Brave call and he was pilloried for it at the time.. Tut tut all you knockers.

I knew the man a wee bit having played under him. He demanded accuracy and that people tried to the best of their ability. He probably assumed that people around him should have a relevant level of ability (which for eg many in the Sydney grade cricket scene of the time didn't) and he wasn't too easy with that - which was a fault in my eyes.

But he was a brave writer and I found him pretty easy to listen to - prefer Jim and Kerry but he was Ok...

Vale Peter, I enjoyed your style and whilst I didn't sit around and have 100 beers with the you - the man outside cricket (if in fact there even was an "outside cricket" life for you), I admired your tenacity, bloody mindedness for the truth and ability to express your opinions.

GF..

PS -- Peter also did a damn site more than the average punter for educational charities in many impoverished countries for e.g., see The LBW Trust.

Vale.

The thing that bothers me is he was a fixture, it seemed like he was around forever with regards to cricket commentary and cricket writing

And all the sudden - hes no longer with us
