Vale Tony Greig

The combative South African born English cricket captain and one of the founders of World Series Cricket has passed away aged 66. He was an at times annoying commentator but somehow you couldn't help but like his idiosyncratic ways. The master of the Weather Wall and the key in the pitch pre-match routine.

Tony Greig passes away

Wrote this on the cricket board this arvo.

RIP Greigy. Shocked to hear he died of a heart attack and not the cancer that he was diagnosed a few months ago.

He fluctuated between being a pain to being a great contrarian voice in the commentary box. He was never dull.

He went at 66 and Packer went at 66 or 68. Greig's role in World Series Cricket was pivotal in getting both international and West Indian players. He was rewarded by Packer for his loyalty and not only got the commentary gig but his first non cricket job after the return to normal cricket life.

I suspect Ch 9 will do something special during the Sydney test.

Also this is a good article written on cricinfo in 2011 about a book written about last year how Greig has been officially and unofficially snubbed by English cricket because of the part he played in setting up World Series Cricket. It also shows how good a player he was.

This one about his feats bowling spin in Trinadad taking 13 wickets winning the final series and squaring the series

And even Chappelli has written a nice article

Tony Greig was a lot of things. A former England captain, terrific all-rounder and one of the main instigators of World Series Cricket, part of a movement that changed the face of the sport forever.

To me, Tony was a fiercely combative opponent and an opinionated commentator and colleague. But, above all, he became a close friend.
I'll miss Tony deeply.

I always hated his commentary until Taylor and Healy were let loose in the box.

Was never a fan of his "persona" but trust people that new him better than I that he was a good bloke.

Did like his "Rrrrright now......" after a couple of quick wickets or a game changing moment.

Feel for his family.
