Not a bad trailer, but it's all flash and no substance.

Would be nice to get some actual gameplay from it.

Platinum seem to be fairly good at their craft though, so hopefully it's good.

They sure know how to make a neato trailer, huh?

It could be awesome, it could be Haze. There isn't a hell of a lot of info out yet. We don't know if it's TPS or FPS even.

A Japanese studio developing a shooter set in the US is kind of weird.

But Platinum games have made some cool games in the past, so I'm excited.

Surely none of that is in game, but I'd be happy if the graphics matched KZ2.

I'll be very unhappy if it doesn't have offline co-op.

It's a mix of live action and CGI. So no, not in-game.:p

This game is actually from the creator of Resident Evil 4. So will be interesting to see exactly what it's going to be, TPS or FPS.

Confirmed PS3 & 360 titles as well as being a Third Person Shooter, where you shoot robots, not humans.

Possible release for late this year. Is more than 80% finished and a demo will be made available eventually.

Speaking in this week’s issue of Famitsu, he also confirmed (via GAF) it’ll be appearing on PS3 and 360.

Mikami also said that – contrary to what’s been said – the game is actually a third-person shooter, not first, saying you will shoot robots in the game, and not humans.

The game’s main plot sees the US taking on Russia in the future, although nothing else was mentioned on the story.

Gameplay trailer for Vanquish. Looks a bit meh overall, looks like it plays like Lost Planet 2. I did like the grabbing the rocket and putting it into the enemy, but nothing else looking that good.

Release date confirmed
SEGA® Europe Ltd. is excited to confirm that VANQUISH™, the epic sci-fi third-person action shooter from acclaimed game director Shinji Mikami, will hit stores across Australia on October 21st 2010 and New Zealand on October 22nd 2010. In addition to this news, customers who pre-order a copy of the game with selected stores will receive exclusive access to a three-weapon pack, available via Xbox LIVE® Marketplace and PlayStation®Store on the same day

Demo available on the PSN and XBL. Only about 711MB so it's not a huge download.

Will give my thoughts tomorrow when I've given it a bit of a go.

I downloaded the 360 version (which is only 470mb for some reason) and I really enjoyed it. At first I was really struggling, the boss kept killing me with his special attacks and I died like 8 times before I killed him. It wasn't until I realised you have to be in constant motion instead of hiding behind cover that I started to get the hang of it. My second playthrough took only about 10 minutes and no deaths and was much more enjoyable as a result

I don't usually like Japanese games (no racist) because a lot of them feel dated in their gameplay mechanics but this games controls feel perfect to me

Downloaded this last night and thought it was a pretty awesome game. I didn't like the controls too much though, would prefer if one of the face buttons was reload etc. That and not having a jump button. Having to go into cover then jump over obstacles was a pain but overall it was pretty enjoyable.

P.S: Jetpacking along the ground and shooting is epic.

Impressions from the demo.

Right off the bat I like the menu (being this enclosed city and fast travelling from here to there for a Start and Options thing is pretty cool looking).

The options as well are very good. I'm someone who switches a lot from SD to HD TV's so the option to actually have a SDTV setting where it will zoom stuff to suit it rather than have tiny writing, etc. is VERY helpful. More games should include that.

Control scheme is interesting, you have your regular DS3/PS3 control type of L1 and R1 aiming/shooting or there's the XBOX 360 type of L2 and R2 for aiming/shooting. Don't know if I'm gonna like reloading from R2 though.

First impressions of the game is a very 'Lost Planet' vibe (and playing more into it, it feels like a genuinely GOOD LP). Died right off the bat, having no idea wtf was going on when an enemy was glowing red/orange and jumping near me then blew up....:o

Aiming is very tight, works good in or out of an aim. Cover works really well (and you can take cover on nearly everything which is great, even very low lying walls where you're basically lying down in cover).

Voice work is typically Japanese stuff with Yanks doing the VO's, so you get a lot of cliche grunting type of voice work. Isn't terrible though.

Getting through the demo more I managed to finish everything up in 14 minutes and 26 seconds with a score of 9450 points (1000 points deducted because of my 1 death). Used cover 9% of the time (probably would need to bump that up a bit in the real thing). Travelled 2089 (yards I'm guessing? It just says distance travelled:confused:), fired 2160 bullets and killed 41 enemies.

There's a lot happening at all times in the game, you have all sorts of HUD elements going off so it's going to take a fair while to learn everything (there is a tutorial, so I'm gonna give that a go). I really like that you enter a slow motion mode (called AR mode) when you're close to death, so if you're really inundated you can fire off a few quick rounds, a grenade or just zip away fast rather than just getting overwhelmed and dying immediately. And you can manually trigger it while evading too.

The boss was ****en wicked, had numerous avenues to defeat it (high or low), could move around a big area so you weren't getting bogged down and could try some different things (something that I found disappointing about Transformers: WFC is you were stuck for real tactical advantages in boss fights).

Very impressive demo overall. Controlled well (annoying not having a jump button and R2 to reload as well as picking up weapons/ammo is strange, but the aiming was spot on), is really fast paced, cover works, it's fun and it doesn't feel outdated (as Pinkus said some Japanese games can). This has moved from a no buy to a near must buy off the back of a very impressive demo.

Played the demo about 3-4 times now. I'll have to consider getting it, I quite liked it.

Yeah aiming and cover were good. Would have prefered totally destructable cover though. It seems like only the boss could destroy cover?

Yeah boss was crazy! It was just shooting so many bombs and missiles!

I didn't mind R2 for reload but did think a jump button would have suited it well. Double tapping Square in front of an obstacle makes you quickly dive into cover then leap over it but it is not as satisfying as a pure jump.

Overall, yes the demo was quite impressive!

Destructible cover would work fairly well in the game, but man it moves so fast as it is I don't know if it's needed. I didn't notice the boss destroying cover, so I don't think it is destructible at all.

Jeez, must've been ripping through it using cover that much but getting just on 10 minutes!

Yeah, I've come around to the R2 for reload (I didn't realise it was R2 to reload in Uncharted 2 - having played that to Platinum in the last few days - never really noticed an issue with that, I think it was more to do with not playing a TPS with R2 to reload for a while). I don't know if it's exactly suited with all the craziness going on in the game though as it did take my attention away to remember the R2 button a few times.

Jump button, I dunno, it's sort of needed but I think with the way the game plays and the wicked cool slide it's not desperately needed.

Could have sworn the boss kept destroying the barrier things that I was taking cover behind....

That slide is totally sweet. Can't get enough of it!!! :D

He might've been able to destroy cover, I didn't really use it enough to take notice of. Was too busy sliding around.:D

awesome game this.

picked it up on thursday night and ripped through the single player in two decent sittings. (one while extremely tired after work and a big one today while rested)
not a very long game but insanely intense and awesome.

the best way i can think of to describe vanquish is transformers:war for cybertron on speed and steroids, a 4 back of red bull, 2 V's and a Mother.
you can hardly take in what's going on, on screen it's that blisteringly fast paced! (which is good thing :P)

i can almost assure you there's never been a game this fast pace/frenetic before. i literally think my eyes may be bleeding! :|
the action is simply un-relenting.

i definitely recommend the game as an eb 7 day return because you should be able to finish it within the week quite easily and there's no multiplayer or any real reason to keep it after the story.

it's really odd that there's no multiplayer in this because it would seriously be off it's ****!

also i hope hugh jackman is getting royalties of some sort for them using his likeness......

the main character looks almost exactly like him!
not to mention has a very similar character and voice to wolverine

Just finished this tonight. Very decent game.

However, easily the biggest mistake Platinum Games made was that there is no form of Multiplayer and this game is absolutely crying out for it. If not competitive, at least co-op was deserved. The game plays at such a crazy pace and is so damn fun that in this day of multiplayer in almost every game it seems downright stupid that when gameplay mechanics are so well rounded like they are in this game that there isn't a hint of MP.

However, outside of that and the only real mode in the game. The SP. First off, the story is basically non-existent. Save for around about 10 minutes at the start introducing the story and maybe 15 minutes at the end, the best you get for the rest of the game is about 30 seconds here and there. It's all very much cannon fodder for the main stuff, which is the gameplay.

The gameplay is very good. Tight aiming controls, good cover system and an extremely fast pace. The 3rd person controls in this game for me are in the top 2 I've ever played, up there with the Uncharted series.

One thing I did and something that I probably wouldn't recommend is I chose to play the game on the hard difficulty. It definitely takes away the possibilities to really experiment with the gameplay and have some fun taking out the enemies. Quite often I got taken out from nowhere just due to the devastating nature that the Harder difficulty provided. I went for the hard difficulty mainly for the 6 (I think it is) extra trophies. And while the hard difficulty didn't stop me from getting a majority of trophies, it definitely made me play a little safer.

Overall a very good game, very full on too. The 6 hours the campaign went for easily accounts for double the action that you'd get in most 6 hour campaigns nowadays for your average SP.

Here are my stats from my playthrough.
Total Score: 173590
Mission Time: 6:24:52
Cover Usage: 15.63%

Hello HBK

Glad you enjoyed it; I've only played about an hour so far so your review is encouraging!

Now I'm not down with the kids when it comes to multiplayer and I don't know what can and can't be done, but wouldn't Vanquish be a bit of a MP mess considering that bullet time is one of its fundimentals?

Maybe a solution has already been provided in some other bullet time-heavy game?

Red Dead comes to mind. Bullet time is just removed in the MP.

Someone really needs to work out how to warp space and time in real life, so we can enjoy these sorta things when playing human opponents

There have been a couple of games that have used bullet time before in MP...or had games that have been primarily bullet time users in SP and then modified it for MP (usually the use of 'time grenades' are the big things).

But personally, the whole MP thing is more based on the extreme fast pace of the game coupled with the amazing 3rd person controls. Chuck in some suit perks (like maybe a jet flying boost) and it would compensate for the lack of bullet time in MP.

But yeah, it's all about the pace and tight controls, that's what makes it just about mind boggling as to why they didn't implement SOMETHING for 2 players to have a go of!
