So you didnt notice Scott moved Varcoe onto Didak in the second half ( in defence ) and did a good job. Funny how opposition supporters come onto our board and rave about Varcoe yet the same old posters here do the exact opposite. Still, you're entitled to your opinion.

I suspect you will have plenty of opportunities to sink the boot because Varcoe will play most games this year.

Varcoe wasn't as bad as you make him out IMO, nor was Hawkins as bad as being portrayed here...I thought Tom's first quarter was good, and he did a bit late....I just wish he would put together 100 minutes.
Agree Dave. Can't see Varcoe's confidence being enhanced by being dropped at this stage. Expect him to hit his straps by round 12. Until then, he is part of a great team, and we should be patient. Every week he contributes in some way, anyone hoping or thinking he was to be the new Ablett is absolutely deluded. Dropping these guys for the Blues game is crazy, exactly the sort of players we need next week.

Yes the decision to handball to Chappy was horrible but I was at least happy that he took the game on in the first place in that passage today.

He was still good a few times offensively, albeit faded in and out of the game too much, but where he disappointed me was defensively. Seemed to coast past blokes a lot, and that goal they got where he had the Collingwood guy (Didak I think) dead to rights and his tackle didn't stick, Travis you have to lay those tackles mate. I know it's hard when you've spent 3 months out with a shoulder, but please, don't miss tackles. It concerns me that this might cost us at crucial times.

On the OP though, there's no way Travis will be dropped. What he offers when he's playing well is so essential that they will persist with him, you can bet on it.

I've heard a lot of people in the media praise Varcoe for his improvement this year.

Clearly two steps back from last season at the moment.

The sub suggestion is good. He's only really having any effect on games in the last quarter when everyone else is stuffed anyway.

Apt suggestion given your user name.

wow ... for a team that had a pretty good night we've now collectively dropped varcoe, mackie, hawkins and hunt, and we'll probably lose ling as well

5 changes after beating the premiers?
Just the usual around here.. Quite embarrassing isn't it?

We don't need him to go in and get the hard ball, we have plenty of others to do that.

But FFS he has been LAZY with his chasing and running into space lately.

Agree with the first bit. In fact Brereton said recently Varcoe's place in the side and role was vital to us going forward this season.

Second bit and its been said before; Trav missed serious chunks of the pre season with a shoulder. All it means is the guys around him are fitter. Varcoe is quick we know, but is still lacking the full 4 qtr match conditioning to do that consistent gut busting running we need from him.
I dont think he is Lazy, just inconsistent presently. Will come in time.
Although history suggests guys who miss large bits of the pre season generally dont always produce their best consistently the same year.

Still thought he did some crucial stuff tonight vs Pies.

Seriously disappointed with Trav tonight. Saw an occasion where he needed to go in to a contested situation and help his team mate against 2 Pies but preferred to run past hoping his team mate (not sure who it was, one of Menzel, Duncan or Christensen I think) would somehow beat them rather than crashing in to try and help. Typifies his games at the moment.

'Outside' player or not when it's your time to go you ####en make an effort! Then to top it he was completely outpointed one on one in a couple of marking contests by Leon freaking Davis. Fair enough Leon is handy but not exactly someone you would think is an excellent one on one defender. Bartel made him Leon look hopeless one on one only minutes later.

Yeah Trav was below his ability tonight no doubt, though id stick with him in the team, his potential for hurting the opposition is outstanding. I think that perhaps our expectation of him really coming on this year was perhaps too high, considering his interrupted pre season. Still i have high hopes

I missed the first half but caught the second and yes it was quiet. Agree with the sentiments re hardness but im willing to put that down to confidence in his shoulder. Im backing him to have a blinder next week!!

Was at the game, high up in the members so got a good look at everything.

He made me very very angry. Should be dropped instantly, how you can be that soft and stand off packs is beyond me.

I know he is not in the side to be tough but when the ball is contested we are playing a man down. All those who bag Mackie for being soft should have a good look at this guy and what he does cleverly in a game to avoid contact.

With regards to using his pace. He must be injured.
Well that's what I was thinking during the night.

In regards to this

Spot on. There were critical moments where he just had to make it stick or the Pies were away and he shirked it. Almost faked the tackle.

It was like when you were in a class at school wasting time. And when the teacher looked up you made it look like you were doing something.

Yes, very ordinary- and trying to get cheap ball. Should cut him a bit of slack though as he is fantastic when on song. Needs more consistecy though, to be a so called integral part of our setup
May be a degree of shoulder paranoia Often those chronic shoulder guys get a little shy of the contest
Still if you're out there on the park- you need to put in.

totally agree, specially last comment

He definitely wasn't as good last night, which is disappointing as he usually stands up when we need him to. He won't be dropped though. Be happy that we're 7-0 and stop looking for players to be dropped. We are rarely going to have every single player on the ground have the game of their lives.

I think dropping him is over the top, but FFS he needs to be put on notice. If he dishes up more of the same against Carlton, then he should come under scrutiny. He's a drifter. Just very disappointing that he appears to have gone backwards a bit since his fantastic second half of last year. We know he's got it in him, but he needs a kick up the arse.

It isn't just about winning games it's about winning the flag.

Our team isn't good enough yet and the same guys continue to produce crap week after week. Hawkins and Varcoe

Varcoe has been very soft this year, he mostly cruises around waiting for scraps and kicks a couple of last quarter goals.

No one expects him to be as hard as selwood at the contest, but the guy has to do more.

He had 12 possessions 0 marks and 3 tackles.

To have 0 marks is ridiculous, the guy has good pace and should be presenting a lot more.

Him and Hawkins have talent but they shouldn't be babied and considered undroppable.

Sometimes you need to drop guys so they value their spot in the team.

Well that's what I was thinking during the night.

I suppose one thing we need to take into account is that he missed a lot of pre-season with his shoulder injury,so maybe his lack of fitness is catching up.A few weeks ago he was really good but now he's getting the Daniel Motlop can't be bothered look at times. He's also a player whose 2nd efforts are very good, but they've been absent in recent weeks.

Maybe make him sub this week and see how he goes coming on in the 3rd qtr [depending on any earlier injuries]

Lazy, doesn't do the hard stuff but most importantly makes very very poor decision maker. The Chapman handball is just one example of his poor thought process, there are many. Christenson is breathing down his neck.

He needs to find form before Byrnes gets back or he could come under pressure. The limited preseason is hurting, is avoiding body contact. I am still a believer.

Don't agree he should be dropped, but believe he needs a rocket! He is capable of amazing things but none of that was evident last night.

If the Geelong team was a pizza; Selwood, Corey and Kelly would be the base, cheese and salami. Varcoe would be the Jalapenos! At moment the flavour of the pizza would be mild!
