Very Disappointing Last Quarter

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

If you thought that was as bad as a loss then you really don't understand what happened, you don't understand how we came to be 9 goals ahead, and you obviously don't understand why we gave that up.

I think when you're 54 points up at three quarter time it's reasonable to expect that you should at least maintain that lead if not increase it. I was devestated by that last quarter and when the siren, thankfully, sounded I stood up and walked out. For the first time I didn't sing the song. I said to my brother that "I almost feel like we lost" and a chorus of 4 or 5 people I didn't know said "yeah". This was the most disappointing win I have ever experienced.

It's also reasonable to expect that the team that has played at a frenetic place is going to tire and the team that hasn't really been working hard is going to have some energy left and is looking to get some respectability back into the score.

It wasn't a pleasing win. Watching us only kick 1 point in the last quarter when the Crows managed to haul back a 54 point margin to 9 is not the way I want to see our matches finishing. I understand how Groucho feels and somewhat felt the same way at the time the siren sounded. However on reflection it is better then losing and if we knock of the Dogs this week then the last quarter performance will be forgotten.:thumbsu:

Much ado about nothing in my opinion.

The game is played over 4 quarters of 20 minutes plus time on.

Over that four quarters plus time on we actually outscored the Crows.

I can't remember the last time we outscored the Crows in a game over four quarters plus time on.

I always think it is is much nicer when we outscore anyone over four quarters plus time on, however which way we managed to kick that score.

So I am pretty happy really because we won the game. :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

I guess Brad Scott had no idea what he was on about when he said that when a team loses a player early that most often they end up losing. I mean, what would he know.

The Port win at Etihad last season was 'worse'.

r_boy makes a very good point. Had we been level with Adelaide coming into the last quarter or only up by a goal or 2 I think our last quarter would have been better. No doubt the effort of some in the last was a little ordinary. Plenty to still work on. To be honest I walked out of the game disappointed. It was good to win but......

Agree, had a strange feeling after the game.

My issue with the last quarter was we tried to defend the lead, which will always lead to bad things. One thing really stuck out, which was a kick out that found Wells on half back with another three team mates around him. Instead of running, he stopped completely, waited for a Crow to get on the mark and was obviously looking to waste time. We turned it over and they kicked a goal.

All the excuses are valid - we are a young side, ran out of legs, had injured players etc. It was very worrying the way we tried to play defensively though.

Well really, had we have lost this game, all of these feel-good campfire people on here cooing and giggling about how our young team ran out of legs would be seriously homicidal about how we let a lead like that slip to a team that's been f*cking disasterous this year.

But no, because we won by a measly 9 points (after leading by 10 odd goals) we can easily wallpaper over it and shitcan ANYONE who says anything different.

Yes we ran out of legs a little bit. But FFS, it was Hale. Geez, what a leg-speed action hero we were missing there. And in one quarter, we nearly let 3 quarters of awesome work be undone by a team that had been woeful all night.

Taylor Walker does nothing all night and bobs up for 5 minutes and looks more dangerous than anyone we had.

People have a right to be angry. It was reminiscent of the Laidley years. Look, pleased to escape with the win, but moving forward within a 'high performance culture', they should not be satisfied with that.

PS- They were white hot for 3 quarters. I did notice that.

When the siren went I was angry that we had thrown a chance to finally blast a hated rival off the park.

Celebrating the three quarters does not mean being satisfied with that final quarter, just placing it in context.

Scott's post match media conference is telling in the way he reacted to the "inevitable" first question about the last quarter. For him there is not even any need for excuses as he provides the reasons for what happened - to me that is all about building a high performance culture.

As a supporter you unfortunately train yourself to believe a 54 point lead at 3/4 time will probably mean we win by 20 points.

We had nothing in that last quarter. One score from a free kick.

Fadeouts and inability to win by big margins has been plaguing us for 8 years mate. When does it get addressed? I think it's a fair enough question. Nearly every year our percentage is down with those near the bottom. Sure the kids were tired etc etc but nearly giving up a 50 point lead, even Melbourne's "kids" did a number on us in the 3rd quarter.

Mr MC, how do you match up this years fade outs to the previous 7 years? Different game plan, different list (read kids) and still learning the new style. Once our stars like Bastinac, Zeibell, Cunnington, Wright et all get a couple more seasons into them and have stronger durable bodies then we should talk.

Are people still assuming that once a team gets a lead the other side is just going to give up?

This :thumbsu:

Adelaide have some high quality mids. At 3/4 time they were torn a new one for their lack of contested ball and good players like Goodwin, McLeod, Vince etc reacted.

FFS did anyone notice that Cunnington played the last qtr on Goodwin? Sure Cunners got torn a new one as Goodwin was involved in almost every centre clearance.....massive learning curve for Cunners which can only be a good thing.

I'm not saying the last qtr shouldn't be looked at and addressed but those doomsdayers out there really need some perspective. I would have loved my emotion at the end of the game to be more excitement than relief but hey......either is better than disappointment.

Look at it this way....if the crows kicked 7.4 in the first qtr and we fought back to win by 9, it would be one of our greatest victories, there'd be questions about why they got such a fast start but the overall reaction would be of "what a great win"......perspective ;)

i dont care how big of a lead north get i am always sitting there shitting myself just knowing that the other team will reel us in, it always happens and im F*n sick of it, no excuse, 3 quarters of football undone in 25 minutes of footy, pathetic

Exactly.

And all the "we've been like this for years" chit chat is irrelevant to this team, this coach and the club's future. We can say it idly, out of frustration, fair enough - but for anyone to come on here and write essays about it as though it actually means anything? The past is another country, where balls are held in the air and we either get pumped or drag ourselves up for yet another heroic, against the odds, last gasp win. And Adelaide ALWAYS wins. Enjoy the start of the new era.

For the first time ever I was thinking of leaving at the five minute mark of the first quarter. Yes the first quarter.

We were getting the ball but our whole forward line was up the field so we were turning the ball over.

After that moment we outplayed the crows which is something we haven't done to them for a long time.

I was thinking that 3/4 time that we have a chance to really bury them.

However Adelaide had other idesa and started to play good football which resulted in us turning the ball over and them getting soft goals.

I must be remembered that this team beat a team last week by 50 points after scores being level early in the last quarter. Yes I know it was Richmond.

I have no doubt that being a young side that we were very tired. In the last quarter Jack came off the ground and was back on in 45 seconds.

As the team matures it will learn how to put a team away. They will also know how to deal better with what happened last night.

I couldn't be more happier with a 50% win ratio after 8 rounds.

I was at the game last night, sitting on the wing right behind the bench. In the last quarter the players coming on & off the ground were absolutely stuffed.Ziebell came off 3 times looking like he was going to vomit only to go back on 30 seconds later.Goldstein couldnt run anymore after rucking all night.Garlett & Harding were buggered also.Wells came off also, probably still a bit underdone & struggling to run it out.We have a very young list who have yet to the 2-3 pre seasons you need to get really match hardened & playing one man short for most of the night was always going to test them in the end. Adelaide looked so good in last because they had done pretty much nothing all night.

Sorry if this has already been posted,i havent read through the whole thread.

54 points up at 3/4 with a 6 foot KPP and the Queen Mary as our forward targets against the defensive Crowbots. No spare ruck to plonk up forward.

Any takers on how much we would have been in front at 3/4 time with Drew/Hale/Edwards or Drew/Hale/Warren or Drew/Edwards/Warren?

Drew, McIntosh, Hale, Adams, Anthony, Campbell, Urquhart, Warren basically did not play tonite.

We had 421 possessions with a bunch 12 gamers in the midfield against a team that build dreamteam points with 154 uncontested marks "switching" play back and forth.

Full strength and one pre-season down the track I would expect to dish out some punishment - b*tch then if we don't.

Could it be more obvious that we are young, have a lower fitness base, and were a man down?

I don't know why this even needs to be discussed.

There will be more fadeouts, because we are playing the ****ing kids.

This is patently not obvious to 80% of the readership.

Very disturbing.

Lets save the Royal Commission for 2013 when this really shouldn't happen.

Finally a thread that has outed most of the worst people who post on the North facebook page.

Yes and Darwin Roo has outed half of them with his comment about other teams not giving up. We glorify our own efforts when we manage miraculous comebacks but we assume that another team's comeback is all due to our failure rather than their performance.

And we're playing the ****ing kids!
