Veterans Rule
Changes to the Veterans Rule mean that a Club can nominate a player to be a veteran if that player has been listed at that Club for a minimum of ten years and turns 30 years of age, or is older, in the relevant playing season. A Club may list any number of eligible veterans and once placed on the Veteran’s List a Player cannot be removed until he leaves the Club. The allowance for each veteran will decrease as the number of veterans increases.
Kerr said the current cap of two veterans was a cause of concern.
“At Carlton you’ve got Ratten and McKay and then Koutoufides likely to be placed on the veterans list, it’s pretty undignified from a player’s perspective, if you’re actually forced to be delisted so the Club can gain a salary advantage. This model provides much more flexibility and I hope that Clubs will be able to do some forward planning and take account of the fact that maybe in a year’s time they’re going to have three or four players who are eligible to be veterans.
“Every one of those veterans players can enjoy the benefit of the veterans allowance,” he said.

Given the above four players at essendon are eligible - dustin fletcher, scott lucas, matthew lloyd and jason johnson. Mark Johnson misses out as he wasn't promoted off the rookie list until 1999 so doesn't meet the 10 year criteria. If 4 players are listed as veterans 25% of their salary doesn't go into the cap. Will be interesting to see if J Johnson is listed as he would be on the smallest salary and if they went with three then 33% comes off instead. Guess they will weight up if they want the extra player spot available or the extra salary cap room.
Given this it makes sense that not as many players have been delisted compared to previous years.

You are however, missing something.

I believe only (2) players can be placed on the external vets list (ie, not counted in the 38), whereas any more would be placed on the internal list (players spot still counted, but part of the salary isn't).

If this is the case (and im pretty sure it is), put our two highest paid players on the external vets list (Fletch and Lucas??, not sure if Lloyds actually eligable, can't be bothered checking)

That means that we can have Fletcher, Lucas or Lloyd on the Veterans list. Fletcher 32, Lucas turns 30 in december and Lloyd turns 30 april/may 2008.

Great news to put lloyd on it with his back ended contract.

I thought only 2 allowed and arent included in the 38 players and 50% of salary used in salary cap. Am i right?
