This is a little premature, but I'm thinking I should get the ball rolling on this early for it to have any chance of coming to fruition. The VFA began in 1877, as did its inaugural season, which means 2027 will be the 150th year of VFA/VFL football (although not the 150th season due to the competition's recess during World War 2 and COVID.) Given the AFL's complete lack of interest in acknowledging or preserving the VFA's legacy, the job is going to fall to individual clubs and supporters if any kind of celebration is going to be organised for next year.
I'll be reaching out to others around my own club to start, and I'd advise supporters of other standalones to do the same. I'm also starting to brainstorm content for next year which could be shared as either video or print material (I've got a wild idea to design a commemorative magazine in the style of the old VFA recorder if possible.) So far I'm thinking:
- A video timeline showing the ladder evolution across every round of every season, including standings after finals and maybe even awards winners if I can squeeze that in. This is something I had planned a while ago but just couldn't find time to get done.
- A 'memorial wall'-style poster acknowledging former VFA/VFL clubs and their fates.
- A historical snapshot of various eras of the competition e.g. the pre-VFA football structure, the aftermath of the VFL's formation, the wartime and postwar years, the high points of the 60s and 70s, and the turbulance of the 90s and the AFL's takeover.
- A brief note on each of the surviving standalone clubs (and maybe former clubs that still exist and have supporters who would remember being part of the VFA/VFL) as well as a couple of quotes from longtime members.
I'm open to other suggestions if anyone has them. This is very much in it's early stages and may come to nothing, but I figure it's worth brainstorming.
