No pal, you face it.jimmy.h said:Face it, the VFL is the AFL reserves comp and no amount of dressing it up will make a difference. If the VFL object to this try and take the AFL clubs out of the comp and see how the VFL clubs do on their own. Geelong is well within their rights to play their AFL players in their VFL side if they wish, seeing as there is no point in them fielding a side otherwise.
Yep 7 flags since 1992 a pretty good effort for any club.My North said:Sandringham will win. How good have Sandringham been in the 15 odd years.![]()

If Geelong don't want to play under the same rules as every other side, then they can take their ball somewhere else.
Geelong needs the VFL much more than the VFL needs Geelong.

After viewing the vision on how the quarter time fight started. Phil Read head butted Ryan Gamble so he probably start the season 2 to 3 weeks late next year.

Official attendance according to ABC Radio this afternoon was 8,476.copernicus said:Crap result, crap crowd if those numbers are anything to go by. What was the weather like in Melbourne? Did that keep people away?
Considering the shocking weather inc hail, gale force winds and rain it is not a bad turn up most likely if the weather had have been fine and sunny 15,000- 20,000 would have been possible.Kingpin said:Official attendance according to ABC Radio this afternoon was 8,476.
The weather wasn't good by the looks of it. Gale force winds at times, showery on and off and pretty cold judging by the way the supporters were well rugged up.
Would've kept a fair few away one would imagine.

Yeah but don't forget a few of Geelong's players are rookies and players who have never played an AFL game playing against expierenced players, which most of them have played AFL beforeSTANG-A said:I went to follow the Stangas in the reserves granny, missed the seniors gf due to prior engagement. In the 2's, the 1st quarter was sunny, then in the second, and through until the last quarter, it ABSOLUTELY bucketed down, you just knew it'd keep the fans away. Didn't stop, just buckets of rain. Enabled us to play the sort of game to defeat Willy and close the match down, so that was good. Not a bad crowd considering. Would've got 13,000 or so had the weather stayed good. . .we're talking hail here (people are conditioned to indoor footy now)!
As for Geelong, it's a disgrace they were allowed to field 20 AFL players, made it even sweeter that the aligned Sandy got over the top. Geelong were lucky to beat North Ballarat and Willy, and had they had the 12 AFL player rule, which obviously they can't at the moment, they would have lost those matches. And Nth ball only had a handful of AFL listed players! And what a disgrace to drop Cook, one of the few VFL listed players, from the Granny team! It was his sort of day! They played another tall in the wet! Did they actually want to win?
I know it's not Geelongs fault that they were able to field so many AFL players, it's the leagues, but it would have made a mockery of the comp had they won. Bye bye Kent Kingsley!

Plumber said:The reason Sandy have remained "in control" was by intially alienating the majority of local players who created plenty of success in the 90's - 00's. They bent over for Melbourne very early on in the relationship. Who can blame them? It is the nature of the new comp.
These players eventually moved on leaving a list full off ex-Melbourne players who have remained to still feel part of the club who delisted them and other AFL delisted players.
There are very few "local" fellas in that team and that is what made the VFA/VFL special in the first place.
If you knew Barry Round, you would know that he totally agrees with me.
Junkie said:I dont think thats totally true. How did they bend over for Melbourne? Sandy call the shots in that relashionship, that is a fact. Thats crap about leaving a full list of ex-Melbourne players. There have been quite a few players who finished with Melbourne and continued with Sandy but that speaks more about Sandy as a footy club. They are a club that these blokes WANT to play for and probably why they are so competitive.
Junkie said:There are plenty of locals playing for Sandy - Liddel, Crowe and about 20 blokes who come through the Dragons to Sandy reserves who aren't regular seniors at this stage of their careers. I would say about 85% of the Dragons players who dont get drafted try out for Sandy.
Plumber said:
They absolutely bent over backwards for Melbourne in the early days of the relationship. Once you have got rid fo 90% of your original list you arn't going to encounter too many more problems.
All the new kids to the system from the VSFL don't know any better and that is fine.
All I am saying is that the VFA/VFL was a great place to play footy before the AFL got involved. It was tough, each club had a very strong and distinctive culture and following, and there were still characters playing the game.
The image of the comp is diluted now. Is it a local comp? AFL reserves? A place from where to get drafted? A place for retired AFL players? It is all too wishy washy for me.
Once upon a time it was a great comp where players who didnt make the AFL could enjoy a career at a high standard away from the AFL. But the AFL had to ruin it for that generation of VFL players.
