W.A. seem well placed to take out the U/18's championships again next year on the back of guys like Nantanui? and Daniel Rich (who will both be top 3 picks next year), and it seems like we are very well placed to capitalize on it.

I say "well placed" due to the number of talented young Vic players coming out of contract next year (ie Warnock, Murphy, Mundy, Dunn, Thornton) who could concievable be used as tradebait to upgrade picks if they have decent years in 08.

I'm bringing this up to highlight that throwing up names like Murphy and Warnock for trade this year (as some supporters have done) might be a bit shortsighted given that we already have the chance of a decent midfielder with pick 7 in this years "average" draft. We would be much better served by holding onto these guys to use as bait for "bigger fish" next year.

Even though I'm an Eagles supporter I agree with you that if you were going to trade for high picks, next year would be the time. Rich looks an absolute gun, would go very high this year as well. Nantanui I've only read about and seen a little of but he looks like a star as well. Why didn't you leave next year Judd :(

Hypothetically though Mundy, Murphy and Warnock have more trade value this year than they will next year because they are contracted. Obviously if they have a stand out year they'll be worth more, but like Polak and the eagles with Judd if they select a club in the bottom 2 we won't get their true value regardless of how they play in 2008.

You could say that this year is a super draft for WA too, we could have 3 of the first 5 and look certain to have 3 of the first 7. WA will probably have 5 players taken early this year with Rance and Myers in the mix for top ten and look certain to go first round.

It's a good idea for next year though, especially considering there is no chance of us earning a top ten pick through ladder position in 12 months time. ;)

Polak and Judd both asked to be traded (and it wasn't a case of leaving for more money) so their clubs had no choice than to take what was offered. Unless those players mentioned deliver a "send me home or bust" ultimatum to the club prior to trade week next year, we will still have the option of offering them another contract rather than accepting less than their worth after they are shopped around.

The "W.A. Superdraft next year" refers to the quality of top level W.A. players rather than their draft positions. Draft positions are relative to the quality of talent in any particular year. Hence, Draft pick 6 in a superdraft could be rated a lot higher than the number 1 pick in a weaker draft. Nantanui towelled up this years likely number 1 pick (Kruezer) when they met at the nationals, and Rich has looked a cut above the likes of Masten and Palmer at WAFL seniors level. That is why next years draft can be seen as W.A. superdraft. The players that will be available next year look more talented than any that have come out of W.A. this year.

It's all looking good now.

Obviously there is a heck of a lot of water to pass under the bridge before the 08 draft, but we have done well in keeping all of our young Victorian aces in the deck.

With the huge interest shown about Warnock in particular (and young ruckmen always being valued over their worth in trade week), we seem assured of a top 3 pick next year if worse comes to worse and he wants to head home.

With this we just might snare Daniel Rich (think of a cross between Voss and Buckley) and have a ready made replacement for Bell in 09.
