“Up for Grabs”,

that 1950 game between Claremont and West Perth was an amazing occurrence. If I’m not misinformed it is the last WAFL game where both teams scored three or fewer goals, and the only case in a major Australian football league between 1928 and 1976?

Will check that out for you this evening when I get home. Sounds likely though.

Not yet. I've given what data I have (qtr by qtr scores, goalkickers) across to the guys at australianfootball.com and they're hoping to use it to update all the information on their WAFL page.

Ahk.

I look forward to getting so bloody excited over past WAFL scores in particular games that combine for a 300+ game or a triple digit win.

While you're waiting for the site to be updated, I should be able to get those details for you.

300+ games will be easy.

In terms of triple-digit wins, is there anything particular that you're after??

Hi mianfei - you're correct on that one.

There have been 58 totals of 3 goals or less since 1950 - and the Round 8 match between Claremont and West Perth is the only instance of both teams scoring 3 goals or less in that timeframe:

C: 2.1 - 2.6 - 3.11 - 3.13 (31)
WP: 2.1 - 3.6 - 3.7 - 3.8 (26)

Goalscorers:

C: Soutar 2.0, McClements 1.1, O'Connell 0.3, Stewart 0.2, Caporn 0.1, Pearce 0.1, Rich 0.1. Rushed 0.5.
WP: Berg 1.0, Scott 1.0, Yaksich 1.0, Garland 0.2. Rushed 0.6.

The only other winning score of 3 goals or less in that timeframe came in Round 7, 1957:

EP: 0.7 - 1.22 - 1.24 - 3.30 (48)
SD: 1.8 - 1.10 - 3.11 - 5.11 (41)

Goalscorers:

EP: Hall 1.4, Kennedy 1.1, Seal 0.5, Smith 0.5, Farmer 0.4, Mose 0.3, Crowd 0.1, Everett 0.1, Gelavis 0.1, Kimurray 0.1, Ray 0.1, Rowles 0.1. Rushed 0.2.
SD: Lowry 2.4, Slater 2.1, Gray 1.0, Brown 0.2, Fullgrabe 0.1, Sadler 0.1, Scott 0.1. Rushed 0.1.

West Perth (Rd 16-17 of 1996) and Peel Thunder (Rd 16-17 of 2003) are the only teams in that timeframe to have two consecutive scores of 3 goals or less.

What's most surprising (but not really, given the high-scoring period) is that Claremont's 3.4 (22) against South Fremantle in 1980 was the only score of 3 goals or less between 1976 and 1987.

OK Redman. There have been 47 matches with an aggregate score of 300+ points. Have got them - just need to format them for here. Pretty tired, so I'll get to it tomorrow hopefully.

If it wasn't for the Internet, none of this archival accessibility would be possible.

As for 100+ victories and their Qtr x Qtr scores... there's been 296 of them, and that table might get a bit long.

I've loaded the data to Google Docs if you want to have a look at it (in chronological order).

I wish I could multi quote so I can massively thank you UFG and both lose my collective s.h.i.t and be astounded.

You are my go to man for WAFL oddities.

Let's make it a trifecta.

All inaccurate games with 24 behinds the minimum.

Also, can I please save these 2 bits of goodness?

Not a problem at all. 24+ behinds by a team has been achieved 267 times since 1892.

That'd also be a long list - so here's the full list on Google Drive again.

But here's the top few anyway:

Go and treat yourself to an all you can eat buffet or something.

Hurry up AFL Season.

Meh - doing this stuff is kind of a break for me, so keep it coming.

If it's something I can do - I'll do it.

I only wish I had better excel skills so I would know how to do more complex stuff like the guys do in the Stats Observations thread!

Actually, I was wondering if there are any cases in the WAFL between 1921 and 1949 of both teams scoring three goals or less??

I do know that the increase in scores between 1900 and 1940 was less steady than in the VFL and that there was a game as late as 1920 between East Perth and Subiaco where only 3-10 (28) was scored in four quarters. On that day Katanning recorded a maximum of 8.8˚C and the following Saturday it recorded the lowest-ever maximum temperature in WA at 5.6˚C! The winter of 1920 was the wettest on record in the Murray-Darling Basin, and nearly so wet in Perth and Adelaide. Perth’s May to August rainfall was twice the average since 2006, and even its sandy soils may not have drained well enough to avoid terrible conditions. There was in fact not a single century score in the 1920 WAFL season, and Perth’s rain totals for each match day were:
  • May 1: 0.0 mm
  • May 8: 1.0 mm
  • May 15: 0.3 mm but with rain in previous week of 34.4 mm
  • May 22: 0.3 mm, but with rain in previous three days of 21.3 mm
  • May 29: 14.2 mm, following on from 52.8 mm on three previous days
  • June 5: 14.7 mm
  • June 12: 0.0 mm, but Perth had had wettest day on record with 99.6 mm two days beforehand
  • June 19: 16.0 mm
  • June 26: 9.4 mm
  • July 3: 12.7 mm
  • July 10: 5.1 mm, though with 50 mm in previous week
  • July 17: 17.0 mm
  • July 24: 7.4 mm
  • August 7: 7.9 mm - though very cold and with 27.9 mm previous day
  • August 28: 0.3 mm
  • September 5: 9.1 mm
Despite this, in fact the scores from the other two games on August 7 were not that low. So the East Perth versus Subiaco game may be an amazing anomaly even for the time??

Just the one:

Round 5 - 1921
Perth v East Fremantle at the WACA

P: 0.3 - 0.4 - 0.6 - 2.7 (19)
EF: 2.0 - 3.2 - 3.6 - 3.6 (24)

Actually saw that one yesterday.

If you look again at the Perth rainfall records, you can see that it was again extremely wet with 56 millimetres in two days, following on from the third wettest May on record, with four times the average rainfall since 2006! Still, the scoring in 1921 and 1923 seems to suggest that the weather did not forbid scores increasing, since it was consistently about 50 percent wetter than the average since 2006 all the way to 1939!

Nonetheless, climate change in Perth has been so radical (and with 100 percent certainty due to man-made global warming if you check the scholarly works) that WAFL history at least scoring-wise really should be divided to pre- and post-1968 to permit fairer comparisons regarding playing conditions. A striking case is how:
  • Before the ongoing, 1 percent-per-year rainfall decline began in the late 1960s, the frequency of draws in the WAFL was little different from the VFL but
  • Since anthropogenic climate change began circa 1967, there have been a mere eighteen drawn games in 46 years

Up For Grabs,

is there any chance you can post Ted Tyson's seasonal goalkicking record?

The most amazing thing to me in those above figures is that from 1938 to 1939, Ted Tyson kicked 226.102 in a side which won only 4 matches out of 38. In a 27-game losing streak which last from Rd 9, 1938 until Rd 15, 1939, Tyson played in 25 of those matches and kicked 150.67. That's an average of 6.2 per match. In this streak were three ten-goal hauls and 15 other 5-goal hauls, including his career-best 17.5 (out of a team total of 18.7) which came in the Rd 20, 1938 loss to Swan Districts.

Now here comes the caveat.

I don't claim any of the above as definitive. WAFL Historians list Tyson as having played 228 games, not 227 as I've counted. They also have his goal tally as 1197 (not 1196 as I have). But if you think that it's just a case of me missing a match where he kicked a solitary goal, then you'd be wrong as my season tallies differ somewhat from the 'official' sources. I only put the quotes marks around 'official' because the league and its awesome historians are always re-defining the official tallies when more data comes hand. For years, it was thought that Tyson kicked over 1200 goals (1208 to be exact) based on data in the West Perth footy club's annual reports, but that has since been downgraded (other leading goalkickers such as George Doig and Austin Robertson Jr have suffered the same fate).

So anyway, don't take my word as gospel, but I'd like to think it's something approaching that title.

One more thing.

Here's a photo I came across in an issue of The West Australian from 1941 of a pre-match handshake between Tyson and George Doig.

Doig-Tyson_zpsa4f3e3e1.jpg

Keep in mind that Doig wasn't a tall man by any stretch of the imagination (See the photo below where he, albeit in the last years of his life, stands as tall as Barry Cable, who was about 168cm). He and Tyson look about the same height in the above photo, which means the two of them, neither whom was even close to 6ft in height, kicked just under 2300 goals between each other. Amazing.
