Round Eight produced some good games and some great weather over the course of the long weekend. Perth and Swan Districts played out a thriller on Saturday before the two derbies on the Monday were also quite close although a few late goals to South Fremantle saw the final margin sit just beyond five goals.

From a tipping perspective, four was a pretty popular number this week although Monocle, andana and getgaff all tipped the card correctly to finish with five points. The bonus point for the round was picked up by Magnum27 who was just one point off South Fremantle's winning margin of 32 points against East Fremantle.

The leaderboard has some minor changes, samFFC remains in the lead on 30 points and has a one point lead back to Miguel Sanchez and Monocle who now find themselves tied for second on 29 points. Freofalcon sit in fourth position on 28 points with myself in fifth place on 27 points.

Round Nine Fixtures

Subiaco vs Perth (Saturday 2:10pm, margin)
West Perth vs West Coast Eagles at HBF Arena (Sunday, 2:15pm)
East Perth vs East Fremantle at Leederville Oval (Sunday, 2:15pm)
Bye: Claremont, Peel Thunder, South Fremantle, Swan Districts

Round Nine sees us head into the first of the bye rounds for 2019 with the bye rounds to take place in two groups this season (this week is the first half of the first group). This week's matches are also split over Saturday and Sunday, taking into account matches being played on Sunday and Monday in the previous round.

The first of Sunday's games has West Perth back at home to take on the West Coast Eagles at HBF Arena in Joondalup. The Falcons' run of good form came to a halt on Monday as they lost to arch rival East Perth at Leederville Oval, a result which not many would have predicted. They face an Eagles' side which could regain a few AFL-listed players as they look to break a four match losing streak and push their way back up the ladder. The second match on Sunday is a battle of the "Easts" with East Perth hosting East Fremantle at Leederville Oval. Not many expected much from East Perth this season as they underwent a rebuild after the end of their AFL alignment with West Coast Eagles but the Royals have now won three matches and knocked off West Perth in a bit of an upset win on Monday afternoon. They'll enter the match against East Fremantle with a lot of confidence and a win could see them finish inside the top five come the end of the round. East Fremantle played well in patches against South Fremantle but couldn't stay with the Bulldogs in the last quarter which resulted in their ninth straight defeat against their long-time rival. This one is sure to be a good game with both teams looking for a win to boost their season heading into the bye next week.

The TV game this week sees Subiaco and Perth facing off on Saturday afternoon at Leederville Oval. Both teams have shown good form this season and the Lions enter the game having beaten Claremont and Peel Thunder in the past two weeks while Perth bounced back with a win over Swan Districts last weekend. With the Lions and Demons in the top three, this match is a clear Match of the Round and should be a great contest. The telecast gets underway from 2pm on Channel Seven with bouncedown scheduled for 2:10pm. This match also leads into Seven's AFL coverage on 7mate although that begins with the pre-game show at 4:30pm.

The Colts and Reserves have a little bit of movement this week. In the Colts, Subiaco and Perth will play a twilight game starting at 5pm on Saturday while the East Perth vs East Fremantle fixture will begin at the usual time of 9am on Sunday. The Reserves matches are at their usual times of 11:30am with the Subiaco vs Perth match on Saturday and the East Perth vs East Fremantle game on Sunday.

After such good weather over the long weekend, this weekend is going to be a complete contrast. The rain will hit in the early evening on Thursday with the wet weather to hang around for the entirety of the weekend. Saturday will have showers in the afternoon and evening with a possible storm and a maximum of just 17 degrees. Sunday will be windy with showers and maybe possible hail with a maximum of only 16 degrees! A stark contrast to the low to mid 20's we've had for the past two weeks.

Well the long weekend was a great one from a footy and weather perspective but we head into this week hoping for some good games but with some not so great weather on the horizon. Nonetheless, we have three pretty good matches coming up so hopefully they will live up to expectations and produce some good footy over the weekend. Happy tipping!

Swans didn't lose, that's all I care about at this stage of the season. :)

Round Nine was extremely wet from a weather perspective with all three matches being played in some challenging conditions. Saturday's game between Subiaco and Perth was particularly bad with the rain heavy at times and also coming in sideways on some occasions which saw the ground carry a lot of surface water during the final quarter. To add to that, Perth only managed to kick one goal for the entire game, that goal coming halfway through the first quarter!

Tipping wise, most tipsters scored two this week although andana and Miguel Sanchez selecting all three games correctly. gaskin scored the bonus point this week to also finish with three points for the round.

After nine rounds, Miguel Sanchez has joined samFFC in the lead on 32 points with Monocle sitting in third place on 31 points. Freofalcon remains outright fourth on 30 points while gaskin has joined me in a tie for fifth position on 29 points.

Round 10 Fixtures

Peel Thunder vs South Fremantle at David Grays Arena (Saturday, 2:15pm)
Swan Districts vs Claremont at Steel Blue Oval (Sunday 2:10pm, margin)
Bye: East Fremantle, East Perth, Perth, Subiaco, West Coast Eagles, West Perth

Round 10 is on the horizon as we head into the second part of this first batch of bye rounds with just two matches this week. The round starts on Saturday with Peel Thunder hosting South Fremantle at David Grays Arena down in Mandurah. Peel Thunder have lost three matches in a row and with West Perth winning in Round Nine, that saw the Thunder slip outside the top five for the first time since Round Four. They face South Fremantle who have had an excellent season to date although East Fremantle provided a few challenges on Western Australia Day before the Bulldogs pulled away late. Both these sides have played some good games in recent times and this match looks like it could be another one with both clubs looking for a win.

Sunday's match has Swan Districts hosting Claremont at Steel Blue Oval in what is the telecast game this week. Swans haven't had the best start to the season but have shown glimpses of what they can do at times and should go into this match with some confidence of matching Claremont who have had some topsy-turvy form in the past few rounds. This game looks as if it could be a good one and will hopefully be a great contest on Sunday afternoon. The telecast for this game gets underway at 2pm on Channel Seven with bouncedown scheduled for 2:10pm.

There's some movement in the other grades this week. The Colts' match between Peel Thunder and South Fremantle will be a twilight match starting at 5pm on Saturday while it's an early start for the Swan Districts vs Claremont match at 8:55am on Sunday. In the Reserves, Peel Thunder vs South Fremantle is scheduled for an 11:30am start on Saturday with the Swan Districts vs Claremont to begin at 11:25am on Sunday.

After some very wet weather over the past few days, the weekend's weather is looking a lot better. An early shower or two is expected on Saturday but should clear by the morning with a maximum of 19 degrees expected. Sunday looks set to be a partly cloudy day at the moment with a maximum of 18 degress predicted while there is a slight chance of a shower during the day.

Well, last week was a real slog for all three games so hopefully this week will see some closely contested matches with the better weather conditions expected. Both games look to be important with a chance to jump up the ladder for some clubs while others have a chance to consolidate their position come the end of the round so there will be plenty to play for this weekend. Happy tipping!!
