Negatives:

Disappointing Peel lose after having a huge lead. West Perth only had a 5 day break as well since they played Box Hill in the Foxtel Cup on Tuedsay.

We were essentially overrun in the last quarter disappointing considering we had an 8 day break. At least on the stats sheet it also seems Sylvia and Simpson continue to drop their bundles after various disciplinary issues this year. Simpson and Sylvia could be delisting fodder if they don't get it together. Both have enormous potential but seem to have a "sense of entitlement" and have to realise you earn a jumper, are not given it. Their efforts in the 2nds of late at least on the stats sheets seem ordinary.

Middle ground:

West Perth beat the Box Hill Hawks on Tuesday whom is Hawthorns AFL affiliate. Clearly Hawthorn have immense depth into their 2nds and West Perth beat them. However, in saying this we should have still beaten West Perth since we had 3 extra days of recovery.

Positives:

Taberner is playing really well at Peel 5 goals, a bunch of contested marks, I hope at Freo selection he is chosen this week. Each time he has been selected in the seniors he is only given 1-2 weeks and I think they should give him a decent run. I think Freo forward line is fairly dysfunctional at present. Morabito continues to build and I would enjoy seeing a come back this week in Pavs 300th. Sheridan, Ibbotson, Menegola looked stat wise to have good games not sure about the quality of these possessions though. Bradley and Griffin progressing well back from significant injuries. Another game into Hannath who is continuing to develop as a ruck/forward.

To watch:

Apeness had a quiter game coming back from injury. Apparently a strong contested mark I wouldn't read to much into this perhaps, he was a bit underdone. Being 199cm, 101kg he is a big for a 19 year old and ready made key position player.

But does he really get the chance/delivery at AFL level? Playing for Peel, he is the focal point. Playing for Freo, Pav is the focal point. I don't think he's had a fair 'sample size' for Freo yet. If he was gifted the 'Crozier run' of games it would give him - and his team mates - a chance to become better accustomed to what he offers the team.

Actually from those teams Port are the odd one out. Hawthorn have McEvoy and Hale, Geelong with Simpson and McIntosh. Please don't tell such obvious lies.

long time reader, first time comment(er)....and life member. all I'm saying is the season is slipping away quickly, freo 1's and 2's have been lacking, seasons not over yet but things need to change pretty quickly if we want to give it a crack this year. 11 goals a game will not have us playing the last game of the season nor will the off field crap thats going on...if anyone can turn it around its the boss

Yeah, I suppose the Simpson assessment was a bit premature but wait and see. At the end of the day freo wants to build a strong, competitive culture so they need to be aware of players who think they should be gifted a game regardless of performance. The Sylvia free agency move has failed thus far and hopefully it turns around, if not I hope Freo acknowledge a mistake and rectify it. Pride can be misplaced after all. But hopefully Sylvia turns it around.

I agree Geelong and Hawthorn have a great models for player development and list management. Geelong have been predicted to fall down the ladder at various times in recent years but what they to is get games into performing young (VFL) players to ready in preparation for the retirement of senior players. Also, they make tough decisions related to list age. Chapman for instance could have played another year for the Cats but they decided to play youth instead.

Hawthorn also get a few games into their young (VFL) players like Geelong and will drop players for not meeting high performance expectations. The bar is very high at Hawthorn though, Freo's list is nowhere near as strong but I don't think we omit players based of form enough, to encourage competition. I am not talking mass changes each round which is bad for morale and team stability just to send consistent underperformers back to the WAFL. Mind you the 2nds are winless and playing some uninspiring football at times, its a dilemma at the moment and even when they bring someone in from the WAFL like Taberner their seems to be no patience. Tabs usually gets dropped after a week or so and we go with the same old selections, I think this compromises any growth in our list. Mind you its good they persisted with Zac Clarke I think in the last 2 weeks he is displaying some growth as a forward who can ruck.

There will be no better gauge for how far Tabs has come than against Geelong next week after he got towled up by Harry Taylor last year in the opposing fixture. A leading target like him marking on the goal side of centre is one of the most important things that we need to help resolve our forward entry issues.
I hope that he gets picked.

It's not all bad, Just had a look at the stats and Peel were moral Victors by the best part of a fair bit.

I'm more interested in how good Sheridan was today . He got the possessions but how good was his effect on the game .
Ballard how was his performance ,was he playing in the midfield if not where and how do you rate him .
From what I have seen he is coming along and improving all the time .
Simpson needs a little bit more time and he will shine he has a big up side .
Ibbotson had a lot of possessions how was the shoulder ,was he getting the arms up and taking contested marks ,if so he should replace Duffield for the couple of weeks he could get for the high bump.
For those screaming for Sylvia find a hankie to match the packet of tissues .

Match Report;

So yeah, I attended the game today cos it is a 2 drop punts from my house.

Saw the last Q of the ressies and only noticed Moller as I was chatting with a few buddies. He may have carved it up for the first 3 Qtrs, I don’t know, but the figure I saw today cut a forlorn, dejected and disinterested player who would prefer to be shooting hoops with his basketball mates. He was cut up in the ruck by an undersized opponent and offered exactly zero around the ground.

Like I said, he may have torn it up for Q1,2,and 3, but considering the scoreline was a decisive flogging to the filthy garlic munchers, I doubt it.


To the main event.

First off, WP didn’t win the game, Peel lost it.

I have never , in over 40 years of watching footy, seen a more inept coaching display. More about that later…


To the players.

MORABITO: I’ve watched this kid a fair bit since his Colts times and he really does have it all. But what he isn’t is a backman.

Mora mainly interchanged from the backline to the guts and wing, (with the occasional foray forward), and whilst he did some nice stuff down back, with intercept marking and nice distribution by hand and foot, he was far more at home in the congested ball situation where he could hit a pack of players, (at a stoppage or general play), and use his size, burst of pace, (he really isn’t that quick in a straight line), and vision to spot up a target.

Why isn’t he a backman? He just is NOT a natural reader of the play in this position. He was constantly getting “generalled” by other players as to where to go, which man to stand, and even then, he was far too loose and not focussed nearly enough for a true backliner.

A bit of the above is due to piss poor coaching tho…more later.

All in all, I honestly don’t think that he is ready for selection yet but he probably will be.

IBBOTSON: Ibbo played mainly on the wing and mid, which I thought was strange in itself. However, he showed some nice poise and control, yet didn’t really impose himself on the contest enough for mine. No issue with his shoulder at all, and probably did enough for a call up next weekend.

MENENGOLA: Sam tagged Shane Nelson out of the game after quarter time. He works hard, watches his man closely, takes a decent grab, got a lot of the ball himself I reckon, but geez his kicking and vision is ordinary at times.

ALEX PEARCE: We have a true gem here!! No, he didn’t play a perfect game, (all of which was at CHB and loose man in defence), and he did make some fundamental skill errors. But this kid can play footy! A natural defender, reads the play beautifully, knows when and how to peel off and was very vocal in organising the Peel defence, (Thank Christ someone was!). Very, very impressed with him. McP’s replacement has been found.

HANNATH: Big Jack, oh how I love thee. Alternated between ruck and deep forward. Rucked very well when called upon and took some strong contested marks, although he let himself down with some easy misses at goal. Lovely field kick. Just not a true AFL quality player yet, but a great depth player as our 3rd ruck/forward.

SIMPSON: “Juice” did some of his amazing tricks, (right in front of me!), but not consistently enough for mine, which is no surprise at this stage. Played mainly off the HBF with times in the guts. Sticks his tackles, has great vision and is extremely hard on himself when he screws up. A true talent in the making. But not ready just yet.

APENESS: My first look at big Mick in the flesh and I was very impressed. Played solely forward, no rucking at all and clunked some ripper contested marks and worked hard apart from missing some gettable set shots for 3 quarters until he went off injured early in the last Q. Not sure what the issue was, but he looked sore in the torso. Didn’t see what happened, but he was running in treacle a bit before, so maybe a rib injury. Only guessing.

GREY: My first look at Brady in the flesh and what a ripper he is. Played on a rotation basis between the flanks. Tough as f***en teak, good frame and nice skills. Copped a hell of a knock, (putting his body on the line), to the rib/hip area late in the 3rd quarter and I was convinced that he was cooked, but no, he came back on. Received some well deserved individual praise from Roger Hayden and Cam Shepherd in the 3QT huddle. Great pick up this kid.

KEPLER: What can I say about the riddle wrapped in an enigma etc?? Kep played 100% at fullback and didn’t miss a beat. He took a fantastic mark running back in the goal square to save a certain goal and manned up very well. He quite literally nearly killed two WP players as he crashed a pack in the 3rd and was solid in disposal by hand and foot. I was bemused that he played solely in the backline and so deep. Something more sinister with McP or Dawson? I hope not.

TABERNER: Geez this kid can run and run and run all day. But, more importantly, he knows where to run and when to run. Took some great contested grabs, kicked 4 or 5 goals, pressured in defence ably, but let himself down with some missed easy set shots. A definite KPF in the making, and a very good one.

GRIFFIN: Clearly BOG for mine. Just schooled Keunen and co in the ruck to the point of embarrassment, took some great contested marks up forward when resting and around the ground, threw himself into EVERY contest and looks in ripping knick. When he is deemed match fit, which can’t be far off, Zac Clarke will enjoi his time at Peel.

BALLARD: Played mainly back.Nice player, works hard, does some very good things, but then ends up ball watching far too much. Not AFL standard at present, but decent depth and definitely enough there to work with.


And now for the fun bits…


SHERIDAN: Despite another report on here, he did NOT have a blinder at all. A more vanilla player would be hard to find anywhere.Tommy, oh Tommy boy, could you be any more flaky and half-hearted if you tried? On more than one occasion you had the chance to hurt someone in a contested situation and pulled out. You hear footsteps Tommy, you really do. Lovely skills when you are called clear, but the ball can’t hit your boot or fist quick enough if the heat is on. Such a disappointment. But his hair is nice. Trade bait. Misses his mum.

SYLVIA: Colin, the great white hope, the answer to our forward line woes and GUARANTEED to kick two goals and add something.

Well, not on todays effort he isn’t. And not by a very f***ing long shot!!

Pathetic, disinterested, second to the ball, zero gut running at all and just a really disappointing effort from someone who gets his tyres pumped up so constantly by many on here.

It says something when the likes of Brendon Jones and Matty Brown school you in the art of hard, gut-running footy with passion and when Kristin Thornton delivers you a spray to man up and do something!

Played mainly on the ball with a long stint up forward late in the game and did absolutely nothing!

Stick a f***en fork in him. He’s that far up himself for it to be unbelievable and signing him was a massive mistake on our behalf and don’t talk again about picking him for Fremantle unless there is a massive change in many, many things with him!!!!


The foibles of footy.


RTB was an interested onlooker at the quarter time break and looked bemused as me, and others, when Shepherd called Menengola to go to Nelson, since Menegola was ALREADY on Nelson for last 10 minutes of Q1. Didn’t see RTB after that.

In Q2 Mora gave away a free kick in Peels HBF. Unbelievably, he went out of his way to pick up the ball and pass it to his WP opponent. Much to the anger of his team mates who didn’t have time to set up properly. Very strange brain fart indeed. Mora squared up with a crunching tackle about a minute later.

Bouncedown of the second half and Peel were one man down in defence, not a spare man down, but WP had a free forward in a 6 man forward set up! How the F*** does that happen in a WAFL team directly after the major break?? Mora was the one under the pump from young Pearce who demanded that he get back and man up, Mora told him to GOGF, he had a man already. Was sadly comedic. I’d point my finger at Roger Hayden, but he looked as bemused as the rest of us with Shepherd.

WP are 5 goals down at 3 qtr time and Peel are holding them for half of the last qtr until they get a run on. Does Shepherd swing a loose man in defence to stem the flow? Does he do anything at all tactical to hold on? Did he provide anything at all in the 3qtr time address apart from U/16’s hyperbole and bullshit?


Not a ****ing thing!!


This is not the appropriate environment to develop kids. He needs to be moved on ASAP.

Extremely sure that Keplers brother, (serious), was having a kick at half time. Folically challenged, big, goofy, but kicking 40 metre bullets off two steps with nonchalant ease over and over.


One of the Peel water girls has a sensational arse.

Peel is not going to win many games while Cam is the coach IMHO.
We need to recruit an experienced AFL coach that can instill the confidence and build team moral .
Under RTB guidance and with the RTB game plan Peel can and will win games but the boys need to improve their skills under pressure first as well as buy in to the game plan as well.

Please understand how little these guys have played together .
Clubs like West Perth have development squads of kids that have played Colts and reserve footy together for a number of years and they know what Fred ,Bill and Joey are going to do when they get the ball .This is the first time most of these guys have played with each other so its a steep learning curve
