Last night Waite dominated Riewoldt and he looks great as a defender but our forward line is too one-dimensional. He needs to play up forward if we wanna win games this year. If he plays CHF than fev will be relvieved of the constant double and triple teaming he gets every game.

So Waite, CHF or CHB?

Its the million dollar question isnt it.CHF or CHB? I reckon one positive against the Saints was the backline is starting to gel.If he was to move forward then the backline would take a big step backward.Unfortunately we dont have much coming through at either CHB or CHF which comes down to bad list management, but thats for another thread.

Waite at CHF = We leak too many goals.
Waite at CHB = We don't kick enough goals.

IMO the team needs him in the backline and hopefully either Hartlett or Edwards can take a step up. On the ch7 footy show this morning Kouta said something interesting about how Waite is task driven and loses concentration when not given a direct task eg Hold Riewoltd.

The eagles managed to win a flag with a couple of good forwards and an awesome midfield, at the moment our midfield is letting our team down far more than our forwards or backs.

Carlton is struggling now but I predict we will get out act together this season and string together some wins.

The improvement will come from the midfield,
  • Murphy: probably been our best player so far
  • Judd: well below his best
  • Stevens: see Judd
  • Gibbs: plenty of improvement looked promising last night
  • Scotland: Hasn't played to his best
  • Hadley: Should only improve
  • Carrazzo: The next two have been really below their best
  • Simpson: See Carrazzo.
I know most think it's the end of the world but when 5/8 of these guys are firing we will win games....

What we would give to have 2 Waite's - one at CHB and one at CHF...

As much as I think we need him more up forward I am resigned to the fact that he will predominantly be played as a defender.

Played brilliantly last night and beat Riewoldt easily until the 4th quarter. We know he can do it, now he just needs to find consistency which has always been his problem, even when playing up forward.

What worries me is that when we put him down back, our forward structure seems to really fall apart and we lack a target across half forward. Having Kreuzer come back in will really help this, and hopefully Cloke plays more around HF to provide an extra target.

Next week it wouldn't surprise me if Waite played forward, because we definitely won't be playing him on Lloyd.

Think positively!

Waite at CHF: We kick more goals
Waite at CHB: We concede less goals

Any time you have that dilemmna, there is only one answer. You have to kick goals to win games, and that means playing Waite up forward.

If he was significantly better as a defender, then leave him there. But he isn't. As a wing-forward, he's explosive, capable of breaking games open, and a threat we desperately need. Playing him at half-back might stem the tide a bit, but I'd rather win more often and get thrashed more often than just lose by 4-6 goals every week.

Plus, once Jamo comes back, who is to say that the Jamo/Thornton/O'Hailpin combo can't work in defence. Bower has been improved in recent weeks, Pfeifer seems a capable midfielder/defender, and we really haven't looked to weak down there. I just reckon we need to try to win games more, we need Waite up forward to do that.

Must we have this debate week after week?

Waite was moved up to CHF late in last nights game and was 100% ineffective. I think he got the ball about twice, once was a handball, the other a turnover.

He plays well in defence. We can't move him from here to there continuously if we want to lock him down in one position, and at the moment it looks as though the coaching staff are training Waite to be a defender, something Waite is much better at IMO.

Kreuzer has to play as a key forward when he comes in!! That'll help out..
With kreuz, fisher, fev and edwards and then crumbing betts.. houlihan and murphy around there aswell, our forward setup could lift again.. Cos lets face it, after the saints, it aint our backline we need to worry about, its whos gonna kick our goals!

When Hammo and Kreuzer develop they will both be able to provide a target up forward while the other one rucks..

Waite should definately stay at CHB for mine, the job he did on riewoldt lastnight was elite.. then as jammo and carlos develop the backline gets tighter..

So as much as i hate to say it still is a matter of time for us.. Our midfield is kickin tho, murphy is gonna be a star:thumbsu:
