I feel for Sando. What's the phrase... standing on the shoulders of giants?

How many pre-seasons of boxing and wrestling will it take before we move up from the worst tackling team in the league?

Just for the record our tackling stats (total tackles and net tackles compared to our opponents was much better between 2005 and late 2010 compared to mthe last 30 games.

How many tackles did we lay in the first quarter on Saturday? Five? Thank god for all that wrestling.

Hopefully enough for us to realise that that doesn't help one iota!

Two things

If we really think tackle numbers/missed tackles are an issue then we need to make it more of a priority to recruit / draft players who are already good tacklers.

And secondly we need to make good/poor tackling correlate much stronger with selection. There have been some glaring missed tackles this season. If they cost a spot in the team I think we'll see a remarkable improvement. Instead it's tolerated with an extra wrestling session plus a lecture from a Kiwi to make things right.

Completely different situation. Garlett was overlooked because of off-field issues which made him a complete and utter liability. Nobody wanted to know about him, particularly after Essendon gave him a chance and he threw it back in their faces. End result - he was overlooked in every single round of the ND, PSD and RD. On average, that means that every single club rejected him approximately 6-8 times.

Pav was overlooked because of a quirk in the draft rules at the time, which has since been removed. Back then clubs were only allowed to draft 1x 17yo kid in the National Draft. All their other draftees (ND, PSD and RD) had to be aged 18+. In other words, each club had precisely 1 chance to draft Pav - and none of them decided that he was the best 17yo for their needs. The following year he blitzed the SANFL and was taken #4, long before Adelaide entered the draft.

Pav was overlooked because he wasn't one of the 16 best 17yo kids in the country at the time. Twelve months later he was judged the 4th best 18yo in the country. Garlett was rejected approx 150 times because his off-field behaviours made him unsuitable for a position on an AFL team list.

Pav was also a porker when he was young, didn't really look the part. :p

Need some serious injection of talent into the midfield and tall forwards. Also a shuffle of core coaching possies wouldnt hurt

Wanted
2 Quick as lightning medium players who would be at home playing AFL football
must be able to create havoc on the field

Honestly why haven't the Adelaide F.C. looked at some of these Indigenous players
there must be players out there We have had one of the best players of all time (Macca)
Hire him and give him a MISSION to turn AUSTRALIA up side down to find these players

Does any body agree ???

I know a bloke at Adelaide who got fired for trying to set up an academy for underage Indigenous players.

I'm surprised the assistant coaches never seem to cop any criticism around here. Our defence is garbage but Milburn gets no mention. Our forward line is terrible too. Who was the idiot who thought Bickley, who didn't even play as a forward, would be an appropriate forward coach? Also Jacobs going from near all-Australian to a complete basketcase in one season and I get criticised for blaming our ruck coach.

I have faith in Sando but have some serious questions about some of our other coaches. Also our pre-season was a complete failure and I think its totally fair to pin that on the coaching staff.

Funny.. not one of the clubs agreed with you. All 18 of them passed him by, with every single selection in the National Draft, every single selection in the Pre-Season Draft and every single selection in the Rookie Draft.

Coz they always get it right.....

They must have done a lot after that, because we finished with a club record 95 tackles for the game.

Dayle Gartlett ahead of Rory Atkins thread

Rory was a nice pick considering where he was projected to be picked. Has some qualities that are absent in our side at the moment. Lefty, good skills and footy smarts.

Garlett was overlooked 120 times, theres no way we made the wrong decision here based on that evidence.

Agree with the OP, FWIW. Would love a quick small forward.

Sloane was overlooked 172 times, more if you include the passes. Do agree that Atkins will be great when he gets his fitness up. Can never have enough Rory's :thumbsu:

I dont disagree. No disrespect to Atkins at all. I think he was a great pick. Ideally we get Gartlett instead of Joyce again.
But i think Gartlett was more of a need to us then Atkins.

Like i said, put a heap of stipulations on him, lots of clauses in the contract, he is what we need.

Look at what the Arizona Cardinals did in the recent NFL draft with a guy called Tyrann Matheiu. Sometimes when the reward is so high, you have to take the risk

It was the perfect time to take a punt on a talent like Gartlett, as a rookie you would find out pretty quickly whether or not he was willing to make the necessary lifestyle changes. It's not as though he was involved in armed robberies or serious assaults was he? It sounded like a 17-18 y.o. kid who wanted to be a 17-18 y.o. that's not criminal it just shows a bit of immaturity which is pretty common for kids that age. We had nothing really significant to lose, we should have cut Orval, the last thing we need is another 3rd tall.

Um, the 95 tackles (99 according to footywire) was the week before against the bulldogs. the 5 tackles in the first quarter was against Carlton. We finished with 58. We have been an awful tackling club for a fair while now and it swings momentum in our opponents direction and indirectly loses games at times. Just ask North Melbourne. Two guys that immediately come to mind are Ricky Henderson and Brent Reilly. Absolutely pissweak tacklers. Always have been and always will be. The fact that a bloke who has played 7 quarters of AFL footy (Laird) is already far and away in the best 5 tacklers at the club speaks volumes.

Doh!

Watched the Footscray game on Thursday. The commentary must have been too fresh in my mind.

Yep, sometimes it helps to watch the game el moderato.

Whilst there was some excellent spin about our world record for tackles against the Bulldogs, it appears to have escaped our coaches notice that the Bulldogs also narrowly failed to set a world record that match. The Essendon match was the first time it was obvious to everyone at the ground (including Carl) that our tackling was disgraceful. The same occurred in the first quarter on Saturday. How can they have almost double our possessions in the first quarter and win the tackle count 19 to 5? Did anyone notice that Port had much greater intensity in the first quarter of the showdown? Why does it take a quarter for us to get interested this season?

Just arrived back from Melbourne. I haven't seen the replay yet but there was plenty of old fashion footy to entertain you Carl (extra man in the backline stuff, just like last year's Grand Final, well O.K. all the finals if I want to be accurate).

Any comments on that great new "tackle like terrorists" game plan?

You sure go to a lot of Adelaide-Carlton games in Melbourne. Are you a reformed old Navy Blues fan?

And can you guess the one that I missed in recent years? Life can be cruel.

I did have a couple of days in the Yarra Valley prior to the match to ensure that the weekend wasn't a complete bust. I'd recommend a bite to eat at the Wanda Inn in Healesville and the Giant Steps wine tasting at Innocent Bystanders. I picked up some lovely chardys for the Penthouse just off Chapel Street.

I'm also looking forward to a week in the Margaret River and Great Southern Wineries in late July followed by the Freo match. That should finish well
