This is the thread for discussing the War in Ukraine. Should you want to discuss the geopolitics, the history, or an interesting tangent, head over here:

If a post isn't directly concerning the events of the war or starts to derail the thread, report the post to us and we'll move it over there.

Seeing as multiple people seem to have forgotten, abuse is against the rules of BF. Continuous, page long attacks directed at a single poster in this thread will result in threadbans for a week from this point; doing so again once you have returned will make the bans permanent and will be escalated to infractions.

This thread still has misinformation rules, and occasionally you will be asked to demonstrate a claim you have made by moderation. If you cannot, you will be offered the opportunity to amend the post to reflect that it's opinion, to remove the post, or you will be threadbanned and infracted for sharing misinformation.

Addendum: from this point, use of any variant of the word 'orc' to describe combatants, politicians or russians in general will be deleted and the poster will receive a warning. If the behaviour continues, it will be escalated. Consider this fair warning.

Finally: If I see the word Nazi or Hitler being flung around, there had better have a good faith basis as to how it's applicable to the Russian invasion - as in, video/photographic evidence of POW camps designed to remove another ethnic group - or to the current Ukrainian army. If this does not occur, you will be threadbanned for posting off topic

This is a sensitive area, and I understand that this makes for fairly incensed conversation sometimes. This does not mean the rules do not apply, whether to a poster positing a Pro-Ukraine stance or a poster positing an alternative view.

Behave, people.

Russia has upgraded some of the Shahed drones with autonomous systems. This article describes one using NVidia Jetson Orin AI board, a small single board computer with machine learning incorporated.

The headline is utter nonsense, this is not a supercomputer, it's a $300 hobbyist board, that's all you need to do visual pattern recognition etc. The article describes another Shahed using similar Chinese boards. I think the Europeans need to be tougher on China as they are providing a lot of material support to the Russians, support which has probably kept them in the war.

Not just China, several of the 'Stans have had European imports go up markedly since the war began, yet their economies haven't. Everyone knows the goods are ending up in Russia, but European leaders aren't doing enough to force their companies to tighten up where their goods end up (eventually). Like still buying Russian gas, they are too afraid of the political blowback. Companies will kick up it will cost jobs and the governments like the extra tax revenue.

Sanctions have depleted the Russian wealth fund, led to record bankruptcies and Putin at the point of robbing his loyalists, but like weapons provided, the efforts have been less than they should have been and too slow. Tighter export controls and more weapons provided 2 years ago and Russia would have been forced to the negotiating table. Even done now, tighter export controls would help protect Ukraine immensely. European (and other governments) just need that thing that's been lacking too much from the start - the will to do what's necessary, not just what's 'easy' and popular.

Unfortunately they don’t care about Ukraine as much as they make out

Major players make statements at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome a day ago. Merz, Meloni, von der Leyen, and both Volodomir Zelensky and the First Lady Olena. The DRM News channel has most speeches in separate videos on Youtube.

Most eyebrow raising moment from the videos I've watched of these speeches was when Zelenskiy suggested those who double dipped - eg still maintaining sly trade with the RF - were not welcome to participate. It was with relation to Ukraine's rebuilding projects, but it came very shortly after he talked about partnership opportunities to access and/or co-dev in the tech spawned out of Ukraine's burgeoning position as a military tech guru.

Essentially, if you were still buying stuff from Russia while all holier than thou brandishing your support of Ukraine like a garish virtue signal station, can poshel nukhuy.

Bloke's a ****ing champ.

I mentioned in an earlier post FM Wang's frank comments have been the most revealing, other folks think so too.
Yes.
Well will be curious to hear Donnie’s announcements re UKRAINE / Russia on Monday.
Poor Ukraine is the pawn in all this, holding back Putin from further expansion in Europe, only Ukrainian soldiers fighting and dying while protecting the West and still the West are holding back weapons while Putin uses NK army feet on the ground.
Infuriating.
