Given what he showed at the end of last year, I think we had to do absolutely everything to try and keep him.

Pick 6 will lessen the hurt from losing Warnock.

Though i'd still prefer to keep him given the choice.

Before he left we had the best ruck combo in the business. Just needed to add the midfielders.

Now we have taken a step back and need to find a 2nd ruck.

I'd do the following:

Warnock + pick 21 = Armfield + pick 6.

I like Armfield. Has excellent pace and could be a good shutdown small backman. Would release Hayden which is great.

We would be better off targeting a genuine forward-ruck in the draft with that pick, who would likely mature in a better time frame.

We have potentially Nico, Kepler, Gilmore and don't forget MiJ who was rookied as a ruck prospect. All would be more than adequate for 10-20% game time.

Get creative Freo. Unless Carlton comes up with a good offer, make a deal with Melbourne for say pick 19 for someone you're going to delist anyway. Warnock goes to the PSD, Melbourne picks him up, Freo gets the pick the want. You're actually in a better position than you started with.

Leverage, his nomination of Carlton means its a bidding war. Take advantage of it to squeeze eveything you can from them. No pick 17 he goes to Carlton. No pick 6 he goes to Melbourne . Ok pick 6 & 17 is a bit unrealistic but you get the idea.

That's all well and good for us but it still doesn't explain why Melbourne would take some crab that's delist material when they could just take Warnock for #19 and save their PSD pick for someone else.

He nominated Carlton, his manager can use it to threaten to walk into the PSD unless a deal is done. Remember he has to agree to the trade, you don't want to lose him for nothing. Melbourne don't have to offer anything.This is just a way to keep Melbourne in the picture and pay up if they really want him. Its a game of chicken to see who blinks first.

"Who won't deal with the Blues and let him go into the PSD if your offer is good"
