I'm just watching the replay of the Carlton game and at the end of the third quarter, Tex takes a mark inside 50. He goes back to take the kick and as he is coming in he goes slightly off his line. The umpire calls play-on and raises his arms to signal this. Tex then kicks the ball from outside 50 and scores.

My understanding was that once play-on was called the ball was live and if you're outside 50 it is 9 isn't it?

If you watch it at this link

So we had the former captain on radio building this trial match up as almost make or break and then.........

I don't know, but I do know that I won't miss them one bit once the actual season starts. We've had to deal with these ridiculous "super goals" for nearly a decade now, when are we finally going to get rid of them?
Over a decade actually ;)
For years 1-8/9 I actually hated them. Hated the rule that stated if there's a 50m penalty that takes the mark inside 50, the goal is still worth 9. So a 10m kick can be worth 9.
But they fixed that recently so years 9/10-11 of the Super Goal I've actually enjoyed :)

The rule is that the same player cannot kick the supergoal. Ie the player needs to offload to another player - like wright did to tex

Correct weight. Otherwise all players would deliberately play on after taking a mark around the 50m mark.

Fair enough.

Not sure why that would be a problem though. It would make the defense need to be ready to pounce if they go off their line and doing so would still be taking a risk.

I like them  encourages long raking kicks.

It devalues forwards by making midfield goals more valuable (since it is usually the long-kicking midfielder who scores a 9 pointer, Tex aside!), and discourages discipline by having players ignore leads to try for the long goal.

When you've got a situation where a player "makes certain" of a goal by running inside 50, only to have commentators decry him for it, it just frustrates me. It's not football. The coaches would be furious with a player who missed a goal because they were trying for 9.

The NAB Cup should not be able introducing rules because it makes for nice commentary. It should be for trialling rules to see if they add something to the game. I think after a decade (or more!) of "WILL HE GO FOR NINE?!" we have our answer.

Don't like the super goal either, especially when you have to listen to Dwayne "bloody" Russell say "THIS IS FOR 9, WILL HE GO FOR 9, FROM THE PAINT, for over a month every year.

Its never going to be introduced for the main season, so just get rid of it. As stabby said, it discourages good play by bombing from 50, as it generally is the poor decision to take.

I think it can also undermine the better team on a given day. One team kicks 15 goals and another kicks 10 goals and its all equal. You would think that the team that kicks 15 goals was the better team on the day.
