Now that's it's all said and done I feel sorry for the Gaffer. Sorry because he's gone from having an amazing season where he was going to feature prominently in the Brownlow, head into September with a flag fancy and enjoy what was supposed to be the best and most exciting time of the season. He may have played his last game for West Coast and will watch from the sidelines as his team launches an assault on the premiership flag. Did he seriously mean that hit, or was Brayshaw running and his legs and body changed position. He did throw a jumper punch 30 or so seconds before from all accounts. Or, did he just say **** it and in the moment just let fly without a care for the consequences and be a reckless campaigner seeking to let go of built up frustration?
On the suspension. I was shocked that he got 8, but if it was intentional, I now realise how can you possibly blame the tribunal. It was a full on crack to the head in an AFL game seemingly unprovoked. There may have been words or something exchanged before hand on various occasions even, but obviously you can't do what Gaff done. If Bugg copped 6, then yeah 8 is a fair punishment. Houli last year got 4 after initially getting 2. The bloke was knocked out cold so this is where for me I get annoyed. Houli should have got far worse and I've seen blokes like Hall and Cotchin get off in Granny's where they should have sat on the sidelines. If they excused them, why not excuse Gaff? Two wrongs don't make a right but more to the point, be consistent and don't have some rules for one and not for others.
At the end of the day you can't make excuses if Bronwlow's, finals and Grand Finals are at stake. It's tough ****. Don't commit the act in the first place. I feel for Gaff because mentally he's ****ed as it's evident to see. He's lost, depressed, and in a haze living a nightmare. He's also cost his team dearly and now they might give up top 2/4 and miss out on a Grand Final appearance. But it's is his doing so he'll have to live with that.
Finally for poor Braywshaw. 18 year old kid and has teeth missing or going to get implants as well as going to miss games of footy and can't eat solids for a while. The Poor bastard literally got hit for 6 and the whole situation is messed up for both.
As for the AFL they should have clamped down on jumper punches/striking long ago. I've seen campaigners get whacked on the chin a few times in the last 6 weeks or so and because it didn't do much damage not even a report was made. They're weak as piss. I also think they were influenced by the public and media outcry which in my honest opinion, is weak. People just want to have a bitch because they have nothing better to do with their time, and themselves.
If I were to give Gaff a suspension with an unbiased outlook, I think I would have given him 6 or 7. My initial thought was 6, take off 1 for his good record prior but that's bs. Originally I was looking at the Grand Final appearance in sight and not looking at what others have copped like Bugg. That was a brutal whack and caused severe damage. I've seen guys do far worse like Lockett on Caven and Brereton on a Swans player who Brereton ended up playing with, but the times have changed. I don't think it was as Bad as Hall's as Staker had his head turned and Hall just spun around without warning and let fly. But again, that was 11 years ago and times have indeed changed. Players and people can't do what they used to do. Things have clamped down now and with good reason. So yes, after it's all said and done, 8 weeks is a fair suspension and he was lucky not to get more. The AFL who are piss weak and gutless should make it loud and clear from here on in,you even throw a punch, 10-12 week suspension. It serves as a huge deterrent and anyone who unleashes knows beforehand the penalty involved.
The NRL is a lot different and probably why I was down playing the incident at first because players have a crack a fair bit it seems, or at least a few times each year. I'm guessing now that the penalties they cop are a lot more lenient. Better to clamp don on this now rather than risk someone getting killed. If someone died once in a hundred years, it's one time to much. Even ever.
Finally for all the people slagging of Gaff, West Coast, I really do suggest you look not just only at your own club and players amongst rival clubs, but also yourselves and those around you. Because everyone has something they are not proud about and HAVE at some stage in their life said or more importantly DID something they would be ashamed about. That's cool if you want to crucify Gaff, as long as you crucify yourselves and your loved ones for each of your poor choices.

Mark Brayshaw's view is a calming one, not necessarily a definitive one.
Doesn't really explain the message sent to the home crowd by the other Eagles players who went up and encircled Gaff in the last quarter after he converted a set shot goal when the margin was 62 points.

As Mark is a high ranking AFL employee there was no choice but for him to be humble. Perhaps deep down he is seething like his son Angus is, I'd like to think Hamish told him Gaff's true character and understands that this was most likely an accident.
