Wayne Carey's time at Adelaide

If they had known it was pick 2, Richmond wouldn't have given it to us as part of the Johnson/Torney deal.

That too, so really, we never had pick 2 at all.

And we also often forget that we also got Torney, now he wasn't too bad a servant of the club, so we didn't do too badly out of it in the end.

From my point of view Carey went as expected. I knew he was going to suffer various injuries and other unexpected injuries when he slid into the goalpost at AAMI stadium and cut open his leg above the knee. We would have had a good chance if we did not miss the top 4 but this team was terrible in close games and still was up to 2007 until improving in the close ones in 2008. The games Carey missed did not affect us, but when the games got close it usually got real ugly. I remember a game against the Sydney Swans at AAMI stadium in 2003 when Carey took a 1 handed mark with his feet over the goal line but his hand inside the goal line, went in switched and kicked a remarkable goal under pressure to win the game for us. Against North Melbourne in Round 21, 2003 Carey soccered an amazing goal from the right boundryline on a wet day but we lost that game in a terrible performance which cost us the top 4. And he had vintage perfomances against Essendon at AAMI and Hawthorn at the G in 2004. He went along as expected but I knew he wasn't going to provide us with 50 or 60 goals in an injury free season. Still kicked 56 goals in his 28 game stint here which is what I expected.

and they have gone on the record a number of times as saying that.

there was never any knowledge that any party was engaging in an exchange for the 2nd pick.

:thumbsu: further to that, i still have a copy of the newspaper article where Richmond threatened to take legal action after the AFL's unprofessional decision-making in this case

The thing with carey's shoulders is overrated they were always a problem for him, the biggest problem was how we delivered the ball to him (terrible) and they weight we took off him to try and free him up. It meant he was playing as a 3rd forward rather than a CHF. Of course the price we paid was ridiculous as well. Reidy gives themselves a pass mark because he was one of the people who made the decision, if he was honest it was maybe a 1 or 2 out of ten.

Gary Ayers.
The board voted on it and all accepted it from memory. It shows a lack research/quality by the football department, ayres was the only one to get the blame for it. A similar thing is us taking rucks in the first round all the time for them all to fail. Its the footy department not supporting the coach properly.

I remember severl games where Carey had two defenders on him , led to the boundary...obviusly to take them away from goals, and some midfielder would kick it to him.

You could amost see the look on his face as if to say "why did you do that?"

Having a champion round the club, even if he isn't your champion...mmm...probably a plus.

exactly the point i raised in the thread i started re: cousins
