Haselby has got to be injured still, he isn't the same player as last year.

Yep....have to eat humble pie with the first two - not prepared to concede on Shirley yet and I still might get a refund with Biglands (it's a long season;) ) but Bode yes I concede he is now a very important member of the side.

I did not think he could play that well:o

Cheers mate :thumbsu:

Nice little chuckle you gave me. You are never "quite" sure about Biggles when he has the nut. It a bit like Birdie . . .

I try and be objective and not too negative ....always glad to be proven wrong particularly when you win ;)

sorry mate,
that says a lot more about your judgement than it does about the player.
:D

Cro-Mo never said he's not a good player JUST (notice I didn't use but) as we introduce the next generation of Crows players there will be a "pecking order" of players to make way.

Skipworth definately but IMO Shirley may find Van Berlo right up his clacker....he's doing a sterling job and Shirleys not exactly a game breaker ;)

ww,

the reason why your badly wrong, and are repeatedly wrong on these types of discussions is that fundamentally you're stuck in the dark ages where you fail to acknowledge the requirements for players with set roles.

I don't know if it's being weened on footy by Mick Nunan or Jack Oatey or what, but if a player is not an obvious driver of play you don't rate them. no matter how important the role, no matter how it fits within the team structure or the coaches instructions, or even how well they do that assignment you think they're a dime a dozen - and with rare exception you're wrong in each case. it's a blind spot.

I would be very disappointed if Van Berlo is doing Shirley's role in 3 or 4 seasons time, I expect him to develop into a premier, driving midfielder, and not a defensive minded 1% grunt midfielder. tagged and not taggee.
the problem though, is you don't seem to see the need for both, and the need to identify who is going to be what.

Your probably right

fact is I don't see a long term future in the game for a negative player...I think the need will be for yes a negating type but with a strong offensive game to run off star players.

This depends on the coach and gameplan but that's just my opinion as you've probably gathered.

But I've been wrong before and will be again. ;)

Like Tyson the season before he went home to west coast?

No like who do you prefer Stenglein or Thompson - that's the comparison i'm about...not saying Stenglein was no good just can he be improved upon

it's just not as easy as that, and footy has moved on in the last 20 years.

you can't go to war (metaphorically for the p.c. brigade) with only officers and generals, you need soldiers. what's more the good ones, aren't expendable or as replaceable as you might think.

 what are you hinting at there ;)

Improvement is about continually raising the bar....the "system" says we have to replace players each year for the draft irrespective of whether we want to or not.

Over 3 years this means a minimum of 9 players have to go off our list.

The "system" will force us to replace the soldiers because we're not going to delist the officers or generals

and you're not going to replace your best soldiers with generals either. they don't like following orders too well ;)

Haselby has got to be injured still,

The whole Freo midfield has to be.

P. Hasleby
J. Carr
M. Carr
H. Black
T. Cook
D. Headland
P. Bell
B. Schammer
S. McManus
(M. Pavlich)

On paper they're (more than) a match for anyone. On paper.
