I guess it confirms 1 thing and that was we actually tabled an offer to Harry instead of the constant rumours and innuendo floating around whether this was actually done. Who knwos whether the stuff Damien Barrett is reporting about Reiwoldt is true.

I'd love to know who they get their information from, there is no way the FFC would be letting this information out to the media and why would they. It just seems the journos get a sniff and make up the rest.

I just find it interesting that in this case an offer was actually made and it was confirmed by Harry.

i'm just gonna go give myself a thousand paper cuts and douse myself with vinegar.

good on him, though. obviously loves the culture over there and it's something we can aspire to establishing more of ourselves.

i'd say harry's management, to eek out as much from the cats salary cap as possible, as is the norm when it comes to freo targets.

Harry said on the Footy Show that we offered him a five year deal.

Managers are the biggest leakers of information, their middle men are usually sports journalist who would write favorable articles for scoops and then there are the fans who are the pawns.

The reason why we kept the Ross Lyon hiring so secret is because no managers were involved.

I don't know who Danyle Pearce's manager is, but he did an exceptionally poor job then :D

Probably more that there weren't any journos that gave a shit about that story I'd reckon.

This is so interesting to me, because in the U.S. teams can't make offers to players while they're contracted to other clubs, no matter what the sport. Teams can't even publicly comment on the contract status of other players. If they do, they're guilty of tampering and are heavily fined. Expiring contracts end the immediate midnight of the respective championship game and it's not until 12:01 a.m. that other clubs are allowed to negotiate with out of contract (free agent) players. If this were in the U.S. and say Harry Taylor was a Major League Baseball player who re-signed with his club, no way he'd be allowed to discuss another offer from a competing club on TV.

AFL is better than Rugby League. They sign with another team for the next year while they are still playing for their current club. What a horrible situation is that! How could you cheer for a player knowing he is going elsewhere next year? You would constantly question if he was 'putting in' for the rest of the year.

Damn, Harry would have been ideal. Could complement either Pavlich Or McPharlin and replace whichever retires.
Sad news. Still, good to know we're out there.

I'd imagine though, Gil, that there'd be one hell of an off season with offers flying around everywhere for a few months?
Papers would be going insane trying to keep up :)

Player managers leak...

I took his comments as a bit of a slap in the face to Freo.
First was the suggestion that he could win premierships with Geelong, but not Freo, and secondly the comment about somewhere else in WA having a great culture compared us unfavourably with wc.
Perhaps I am being too sensitive :( & need to HTFU, but with that long contract I hope that his form (not injury, he doesn't deserve that) drops away rather quickly.

No I don't think you are being too sensitive. I think he meant exactly that. And yeah, in the finals I'll be barracking for us and anyone playing Geelong :D

To be honest between Taylor and Scarletts comments over the last few days, their culture must be one of having your head up your own arse.

But he would have been handy for our team.

I interpreted it as "somewhere else, other than Geelong, which happens to be in WA (ie Freo for example), might have a good culture, but I like the culture at Geelong, so I don't want to leave".

I can see how you could read it otherwise, but I don't think that is what he was doing, comparing us unfavourably with WC.

But yeah, he can stick it for suggesting there are no premierships to be won here's at Freo. He might bethe missing puzzle piece - stay at Geelong an they win one, come to Freo and we win one. Of course, if Geelong win one now, his decision will be vindicated, even thought they might not have, had he left...

That's part of the fun! There's even a baseball website, mlbtraderumors.com, that's devoted to that very subject. Also in MLB, there's a July 31 trading deadline, with contending teams as "buyers" and pretenders as "sellers." Also, baseball players don't have nearly the say Aussie footballers do, in influencing where they'll end up. In baseball, only players with 10 years of service and the last five with the same club ("10-and-5 men") or ones who have "no-trade" clauses in their contracts have veto rights, by which they can block being traded to a team they don't wish to play for. There's also a limit on the number of times (called "options") an MLB team can call up a player from one of its minor league affiliates before losing that player to free agency. I agree with freodog, that the NRL system sounds horrible -- how could you cheer for a player on your club knowing he'd be playing for a rival the following season?

The player manager !

At the end of the day, we wouldn't really want anyone who doesn't really want to be here. I am just a bit miffed that he felt the need to discuss the offer in public, it does come off like a massive slap in the face to our club.

Totally agree! Who wants to hear a player has used their club as leverage to get a better deal from the one he has agreed to stay with?

I didn't really see any malice in HT's comments about the reasons for sticking with the club, the way I see it that his praise for the club he is sticking with is based on his experience with that club in his career to date, and not a assumption that another clubs culture is weaker, ie. they're different subjects entirely. The fact that he and his wife pondered their decision for so long would suggest this is the case.

Some precious posters here I think.

Hahah, what?

Why would you leave Geelong? The allure of likely success, a good wage and contract, being a one club player... Freo are in an alright place, but you can't begrudge the guy for staying at the best club of the 21st century. He doesn't seem like a prick and everything he said seemed fine. He's not Kurt Tiprat.

Harry Taylor quite often shows respect to Fremantle. Especially Luke McPharlin – didn't he call him his idol?

There's nothing wrong with utilising Freo's offer to boost Geelong's. I don't think he entirely held them to ransom, and I can't imagine the Catters playing those games. Good on him. It was only ever a chance.

Unless we are prepared to throw GWS, GC, money around, I dont believe we can attract any established
superstar. To date has been a waste of time.
Have to develop our own stars, via the draft, or try the moneyball science of poaching good B grade players.
Geelong have had prolonged success from their recruiting/development programs, Ottens excluded, and
both WA clubs had the chance to pick Harry in the draft.
