Should our lack of endurance be a concern at this time of the year?
Or can it be assumed that it will improve over coming weeks?
I'm very pleased to enjoy a rare round one win and, when not fatigued, the side looked very good. But it must be remembered Chris Yarran saved us all considerable embarrassment.

Happened to a number of teams. Collingwood, Geelong, St Kilda to name a few off the top of my head. It's just this time of the year. Adrenaline pumping and they all push too hard in the first quarter. No cause for concern.

except apparently Carlton who finished full of running over the top of us! Thats why the 'we got tired' excuse doesnt stick for me: it was something in addition to that: Carltons tactics exposed us..
Watch that last quarter again Mate- there is only one reason why Carlton got on top and that was the fact that we stopped running and supporting, giving options forward of the ball carrier. It was run/fitness, pure and simple- have a good look at the amount of run and carry they had. We ran out of juice, plain and simple

Only reason that the result got even close was due to our unbelieveable missed shots in the last 2-3 minutes of the 3rd quarter, most easy kickable game clinching goals (just watched the replay for the first time and I was pissed off watching that period even though I knew we had won!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). Lade said on SEN Friday that we will be practicing goal kicking a lot this week- I can understand why after watching the replay- some of the misses were shockers, and yes, I know the Blues missed a few too but we should have been 60 points in front at 3QT, not 30.

yep, I totally agree we stopped running: and not saying we didnt run out of legs.. but the run-on that Carlton had was incredible: the were faster than at any point previously in the game - or were made to look like it anyway. Someone else posted that we didnt manage to slow the game down and hold onto possession properly .. and I think theres something to that. We didnt shut their run down.

Agreed. Perhaps it had something to do with the fact they have more "mature" onballers, that are well experienced and have experienced so many pre-seasons they can run out a game??? But we need to quickly learn how to slow the game down when the opposition gets on a run. Although on this occasion, I truly believe we had used up all our petrol in the tank to get so far in front.

Mick said it himself in the press conference afterwards, they dropped all the defensive work and went full on offense to try and get back into the game. No more tags, etc.
Add to that our running out of legs and it got them back into the game.

I think thats about right...come the last quarter they dropped Malthouse's new game plan and went back to playing like they always did under ratten...
They had nothing to lose and everything to gain...
Combine that with the fact we were tiring...failed to slow the game down...Chaplin was injured/Ivan rusty...and their talls started clunking marks...
We held on to win....all a learning experience for our younger players...we will be better for it...

Watching the game with rusty, I said just before 3/4 tim that we ad run out of petrol, pure and simple, look at the asks, adelaide etcetera , Christ look at Melbourne they were using diesel in. Petrol car.

Looking forward to Foley back on the interchange as an impact player. Does anyone think that last quarter would have happened the way it did if Foley had been available to bring on?
