Now that I’ve got your attention :D

Listening to NC’s post-match press conference on Saturday got me to thinking (about some pretty obvious things, I suppose, but there you go…)

1. NC was asked “where is the improvement going to come from next year?” He struggled with the reply, IMHO, and didn’t really say anything material, but meh, it’s a pretty hard question to answer in a post-match PC and probably a dumb question to ask in the first place, in that environment.

But it did prompt me to think (and I’d like to think this is NC’s thinking as well) - well, even if we turn over, say 6 players this year - unless there’s an absolute miracle pick in the draft the improvement in our performance next year must come from the 34 players who are still on the list from this year and that is where NC must focus his attention (in terms of success in 2007). And I think that’s part of what NC was trying to say in the PC.

Now that might seem like stating the obvious, and it’s the same for every club - but I just think it’s good that our coach is thinking in those terms and not about “who we’re going to draft” as the first stop in thinking about 2007.

2. And so onto the other subject - the good old “Adelaide is about to fall off a cliff, when the magic names Ricciuto, McLeod, Hart, Edwards and Goodwin no longer appear on the team sheet”. Is this true?

Well, it’s possible, of course. It’s possible if the development of the next generation falters. But let’s have a look at where we stand right now. And I mean to assess this not by the tired old “exactly which one of Richard Douglas, Scott Thompson and VB will turn out to be the next Roo” - it’s not a straight 1-1 player swap we’re talking about - and not by the quality of the players as such, but by how much we rely on them right now, and in particular how much we relied on them for our (nearly Grand Final appearance) performance in 2006.

And I stress that none of what I say below is meant to be a criticism of, or an insult towards, these champions of our club. Just an attempt to objectively assess of how much we actually rely on them (as opposed to in our minds :D ) right now/

Hart - Frankly I don’t think we relied on him much at all in 2006. He was good until his injury, but never as influential after that. Our defence is already, effectively, playing without Ben Hart, and playing well too. Strike Benny from the “what happens when...” list.

Bassett - Still key to our defence. One we need to replace.

Roo - Key player early in the year, lost a bit of touch / was injured later in the year. Probably won a couple of games for us up forward, but on the other hand he was substituting for players like Welsh who, if not injured, might have made the same contribution. Doesn’t really contribute to the midfield any more, that is now the domain of (mostly) the new generation. We are almost - almost - beyond relying on Roo for our success.

McLeod - Similar to Roo. Stiffy provides as much run off half back, Macca isn’t an integral part of the midfield - still a key player, of course, but not the lynchpin that he was once.

Edwards & Goodwin - Key players, still major contributors. We need to wean ourselves off them over the next 2 years.

Overall, I think we are showing some good signs of transitioning to the next generation. The importance of these older players to our current team, as of right now, is perhaps not as much as people might assume. There are of course no guarantees - but there is every prospect that we can successfully transition to a new generation, a team that is just as competitive as the 2006 team, without having to plummet down the ladder and take 4-5 years to “rebuild” as a genuine premiership chance.

You got my attention and I think your resume was very good. I still think we have the basis for a very good team. Backs will be ok. Midfielders have been given good exposure this year and with stronger bodies next year I think we have the personnel. Full forward and CHF are areas that need development. Maybe Roo can cover FF but we still need development for the future. Maybe Maric could be given experience down there. I remember him taking a great pack mark for Magpies in the elim final. Rucks in the hands of Hudson Meeson MAric will develop. With Biglands" injury I think it is imperative that Griffin is further developed.
We have plenty of mid size runners that will come on and I think our priorities in the draft should be tall KPP's with a view to playing in 2 years time. Will be an interesting draft.

Ever since Craig got the gig offically we have been making the "transitition".

Under Ayres our senior proven players were run into the ground and the development of our lesser lights was comprimised.

Since Craig has took over the responibility and development of our "backbone" group is good.

Time and time again in critical moments of important games you see a midfield of Shirley,Thompson and rielly or even VB or Douglas and Doughtey in place of one of them.many a time Our Star players are on flanks or on the bench.

Against Freo the other week at 3/4 time our gun midfield pretty much spent more time on the pine than anyone and when on in the last quarter they spent time on flanks.

Mcleod has many a game at HBF barring disaster,Ricciuto is potentially the same at FP/FF.

Our Spine is young and proven,we have been developing midfielders and specifacally drafting them lately.

I find whats being said since saturday by various people inside and outside this state fickle and selective.

We dont need key forwards, perhaps depth players at worse,we dont need tough or gun midfielders just appropriate development of what we have invested in.

The Forward issue to me is a joke.

On Saturday We had three key forwards out injured,One who it was his first game in 2 months and three others who basically didnt start playing until July after long term injury and we got within 10 points of the Minor Premier.

No club can have a list to prepare for that.

We got 1 finals game out of our 4 leading goal kickers for the year.

This talk about Premiership window to me is selective, look at the Buldogs Brownlow votes last night, there kids wernt rated to well from the Umps:eek:

Take there 3 other senior players out and there output will probably drop anyway and see how they go,there in a worse postion than us.

Everyone made excuses for there injuries but they were not as bad as ours but its our list that gets critisised and basically written off.

We may need a tinkering but IMO we have the tools at our disposal for the next two years and the development in place to cover the retirements to big name players.

Its future KPP we really need for way later down the track.

Good work Arrowman. Agree wholeheartedly.

I did manage to find one grammatical mistake though. Better go back and edit it. Are you an English teacher ?

Mad Dog's first post on Big Footy....:o

I still think that Roo can play a Darren Jarmen type role pinch hitting in the mid field - but more importantly using 300 games worth of experience to out think his opponent in a vacant fwd 50. In the absence of someone "up and coming" .....I think Roo could do some damage up fwd.

Arrowman - fantastic post....I was only thinking along these lines the other day.

The issue is not so much how we cover these champs........but how we manage their exit.......;)

Quality 1st post MD!

I feel much more comfortable with our list now, then when Craig took over, as he has started the development of the next gen to come through to take over from Roo/Goody/Edwards/Macca.

I think you are correct. Improvement will need to come from the 2006 list. We know that we don't have the most talented list. So What? Look at Sydney. So many unsung heroes on that list. You've got Jolly, Malceski, Schneider, Roberts-Thomson etc... Their whole team chips in. They know each others game inside out as well. If our team work together as it did from Round 1-15 then we can be as successful if not even more successful than this year.

We'll need cover in the KPP areas. Also I would like a person with flair in our midfield. Someone like Dale THomas. He took on Macca in his 2nd match of AFL footy? Not many youngsters will try that.

Richard Douglas has the speed and agility to add flair to the midfield if he gets his opportunity
