Sam Mitchell killed us tonight. All credit to him, he played an amazing game. Absolutely stellar was his effort. He single-handedly won the game for Hawthorn by willing them back into the game. I don't know what his "Stats" were, I don't particularly care for them, I just base what I say from what I see. And from what I saw tonight, we were one lockdown player short of another GF berth (among many other things I know).

If Lingy was still playing, there's no way he would have let Sammy Mitchell tear us a new one like he did tonight. Hell, I would have even made a deal with the devil to get that flog Crowley in blue and white hoops for a night just to sit on top of Mitchell every time one of his muscle fibres twitched.

I don't want to sound melodramatic, but there's no doubt that as much as we've missed a big influential ruckman over the last couple of years since Ottens retired, we've almost missed that lockdown player who can quell not only the ability of the oppositions best midfielder to will himself to the contest, but to who can also quell subsequently their ability to lift their whole team.

If Freo make it through to the GF, watch Crowley all over Mitchell like a rash. As much as we hate the two purple flogs in Crowley and Ballantyne, there's little wonder why Freo supporters hold them in such high esteem. They play their roles perfectly, get under the skin of the oppositions best players which usually results in putting them off their game.

Now don't get me wrong, I love the way we play footy. We play them as it should be played, but that's not to say that we can't do that with as much grace and humility as humanly possible while also having an "unsocial" element to us when need be. Lingy did it perfectly, he got under the skin of the opposition (Nathan Buckley in particular) and generally has a say in putting the clamps quickly and effectively on the oppositions best players.

Ling was a star who's influence is still underrated on this board IMO. He's irreplaceable, but that doesn't mean that you don't at least try, Taylor Hunt is a good young prospect, but IMO a tagger he is not. I'd love to get a player like Scott Selwood to our club. He's a great tagger, brilliant tackler who reminds of Kelly in the way that he goes about it, and he can also hurt the opposition going the other way too if they're not careful.

Wishful thinking I know, but if we could secure a great lockdown player, get our No.1 rucks back up, get a fit and firing Hawk sans back issue whilst simultaneously getting more and more games into our young players legs over the course of next year, I'd be very bullish about our chances at the big dance next year. Footy is a funny game, but not too much had to change in our favour for us to be heading into another GF and perhaps 4 in 7. But onwards and upwards from here at the very least, and that's saying something considering we have had such a good year.

I thought that's why we have Taylor Hunt?

We did but he doesn't appear to have the brains/ability for it. As I have said I would love to see GHS given a crack. Not quick but is big for a midfielder, tough and strong. Plus he can kick a goal or two and cause problems going the other way and win plenty of it. Bit like Ling without as much goal scoring ability.

Horlin-smith should be moulded into this role.

Key traits of what made ling (and Crowley now) a successful tagger is:

- having a big body
- contested

HS has these attributes and he did tag josh Kennedy out of the game early this year.

It would give horlin smith a defined role in the side and he would still be able to do his contested stuff.

I don't think Taylor hunt is big enough to tag, he gets pushed aside too easily.

Guthrie is another but he is too valuable in the backline.

Couldn't agree more. There is no way Crowley or Cameron Ling would have let Mitchell get what he did if they were on him. I could see Mitchell at stoppages and no one was near him and he would get the clearance. He set so much up for them. Surely someone on our list has the capabilities of becoming a lock down tagger.

Yep I agree strauchnyy GHS has it for me.

Good tank is a start

I think he should step up next year and say I want to play and I'll be a tagger if is what will get me a game.

Perhaps move T. Hunt to the back pocket for J.Hunts role.

I think it was 2006ish when Ling was playing as a proper midfielder and getting 20 odd touches a game but was really too slow in the middle and playing poorly IIRC. He probably thought this isn't the best for and went for the tagger role, and just dominated everyone from there.

Maybe it is GHS. Most of the spots where we have been done recently were inside contests or someone sitting 2m off the back of a contest. Killed in the rucks as well. Surely West and Vardy was the set up?!

Should look to try and gain a yard over Summer, his aerobic tank is there.

As mentioned above he could still complete his inside work. Will come into the side for Corey anyway.

Jed Bews is the guy, exceptional burst of speed from a standing start.

Another summer of full on cardio-weights, Jed in next year.

Yeah, hadn't noticed that so much until last weeks match, saw him really burn some guys of the mark a couple of times.....impressive.

What about Schroder for a tagger?

We need a Ruckman who can stay on the park.
Well that's obvious, but there are multiple threads other than this one to discuss that issue. Here isn't one of them. Given everything else which we've had issues with, nothing could be more apparent last night than our lack of a genuine tagger. We mitigated almost all of our structural issues last night, and all in all we should be so proud of how the boys played. But it doesn't change the fact that we still missed a huge opportunity, and despite battling through huge adversity - we still very nearly snatched a win. Sam Mitchell was the big difference last night, and whilst singlehandedly willing Hawthorn over the line - subsequently exposed at the same time another glaring omission from our list since Linga retired. If we had put the clamps on Mitchell we would have won, it's that simple!

Jed Bews is the guy, watched him closely the last 2 years and he's going to be a rippa.
Injury prone this season but had he not been injured, he would have got senior exposue.
Good size, about 6 feet 1 in the old and nicely built with exceptional burst of speed from a standing start.

Another summer of full on cardio-weights, Jed in next year.

could be a very good call, You Rippa. :thumbsu:
