two actually...

We have a man called Slattery .. the number 20, everytime he goes near the ball, i fear for the worst... Over the last 2 weeks, hes showed signs of improvement but... hes horrible!

he takes so long to get it on the boot, takes ages to get going, and well he cant really run...

Our other problem is our kicking game... Do we only practice handballing at training? why are we missing so many targets? is it cause we are out of puff to kick it thro?

Atkinson for Slattery :thumbsu:

Yes, the problem is an idiot like you is posting on our board. Even though you give Essendon supporters a bad name at least when you post on the main board I don't have to put up with you inane comments and obtuse observations.

Atkinson didn't perform in the VFL. That's one little thing to consider, here's another:

Slattery got a massive wrap from Knights last week, and backed up this week, keeping Schnieder (who kicked 5 goals last week) goalless. And he kicked a goal himself. And he had 14 disposals at 93%, and only one clanger (average for both teams).

i.e. you're f***ing blind.

Although Slattery may of kept Schnieder goaless, he was around the ball a lot and set up quite a bit of play for the Saints on the rebound. Slattery has been decent the last two weeks, but I would rather have a young guy with some potential rather than Slattery who doesn't appear to be getting any better as a player.

I'll probably cop some crap for this post; but that's how I see Slattery's game. Decent the last two weeks, however seems to be inconsistent and not improving as opposed to someone younger.

Slattery is a terribly underrated footballer. He does what he is instructed to do, he keeps his opponent quiet. He did that last night against an in form goalsneak and should be applauded.

Pretty funny. You want to bring in a bloke who has struggled with turnovers by foot in the VFL yet you say we have a problem with kicking.

Slattery is a more than decent player :thumbsu:

Don't drop anyone unless there is someone else playing better..and there isn't anyone at the moment

Silly thread,

Our problem is who to drop for McVeigh, Prismall, Reimers, Welsh & Fletcher. Going to be some hard selections in the coming month.

Good problem to have.

I agree that Slattery lacks a little with disposal… but he’s not alone… I like the way he plays footy…tough…. hard at the contest… He’s an old fashioned defender…still young and improving…

Slattery's disposal efficiency of 92% is terrible, if you were talking of Houli i may of understood the post.

Good problem to have.

Firstly, OP = Douche. Slattery would be in our top 10 for B/F this year. I admit he has been bad in the past but he is turning into a great back pocket.
With our returning stars, Hooker will make room for Fletch, Houli, Myers will for McVeigh and Welsh. Pris is earning his spot at the moment and Reimers will have to come through the VFL.
I can't wait until we get a fit McVeigh back.

Spot on.
Don't forget Lucas(if he can find form) Skipworth, Hurley etc. amongst them.
Our problem soon will be who misses out.
Something we haven't had in recent memory.
The way things are panning out our depth will be a real strength where it was a weakness.
A good by product of our horrible run of injuries.
Who knows we may even see Gumbleton play for us in a real game.

slattery has been more then serviceable this year, always shuts down whoever he plays on and does some damage on the counter attack. plus we need a but of grunt and aggression in defence and he provides that.

at the rate he is going hooker wont make way for anyone. fletcher will probably take myers role or maybe houli, helping to set up play from defence and he can play on pretty much any forward whether thats a small crumbing forward or a massive power forward, with fletcher we dont have to worry about bringing in a tall defender for a small defender because he can play both.

welsh wont be back for a couple of games yet, mcveigh may come back for geelong however i really dont want them rushing him back. i feel that lonergan will make way for one of prismall mcveigh or welsh. he just hasnt improved as much as i would have thought, still doesnt get enough of the ball

never been a fan of slattery, but he has earned his place this year. we need his type of player anyway, so he's going to stay.

the kicking skills were average though, especially kicking to our leading forwards. alwyn was a major culprit, but i think we can put a lot of it down to st kilda's real and perceived pressure.

are you serious?

His job is to keep his opponent quiet, which he did [schnider was goalless]
He was great last night.
I'd much rather have slattery in than atkinson

Atkinson for Slattery :thumbsu:

The only problem I can see here is how stupid this thread is. Slatts has been sensational all year. He's making less errors by foot and the stupid free kicks are becoming less and less. He'd be one of our first picked atm. Atkinson would be behind Quinn and Nash. I'd say hes on the list as insurance for Dempsey.

If his two weeks are indeed better than his usual game, then he is improving -- obviously two weeks is not enough to make foundation for a career, but you can't drop him on the basis of non-improvement if he's last 2 weeks are, well, improvement. And he's only 23 -- we already have a plethora of youngsters back there: Pears, Hooker, Hurley, Daniher, Myers... especially with Fletch out we can't have a total kindergarten back there, no matter how well they're handling themselves, for the times when things get Serious. So really, he's the perfect age.

I think Slattery's career got off to a slow, bumbling start, but he always showed the potential to reliably fill a back pocket. This year he is starting to fulfill that potential. The coaches obviously have faith in him, and nothing in his game this year suggests we should doubt them. IMO.

i didnt make the thread to cop a load of shiit... Surely before these two weeks, slattery was on the chopping board...

I havent rated his game massively.. hes always behind his opponent...

his current form is good, but AHHH hes shocking when hes not playing like this...

Poor baby.

"His current form is good" and yet you want to drop him for Atkinson, whose form is not good in the VFL.

Don't start nothin', there won't be nothin'.

What was Slatterys roll last night?
