Watching that live I couldn't believe my eyes that it was given. I think the ump just succumbed to the pressure of the situation and had a brain fade.

Guys, its not anti richmond bias - they are just incompetent.

What was with the holding the ball rule. Some of the decisions were just dumb. Players given no opportunity to get rid of it when all they were doing is contesttsing the ball. We all know by week 5 it will be eased off and by the finals the rule will be non existent.

lol carrying on as though we are the only side that gets a poor decision. its the same for everyone.
yes the umps have been shit for ages and yes we copped a few bad ones ask any stkilda supporter and im sure they could point out their fair share at the drop of a hat.

blaming umps is making excuses. if milne or archer had kicked straight or stkilda converted a bit better in the first q. lets not deal in what ifs and lets stop squealing like babys.

if you want to lay blame for such a low standard of umpiring for all teams blame those who keep on tinkering with things that were never broken.

Agree, Essendon and Hawthorn have the most to complain about IMO

In all honesty, I want to hear how the ump reached that decision. I was at the game and could not believe it.

Now it's been confirmed as an error, there are two possibilities:

  1. The ump didn't know the rules
  2. He didn't think McG was under pressure

Either one is mind-boggling.

2001? We beat the dogs by about 2 or 4 points and tackled Nathan Brown high in the dieing minutes, no free paid

Yes! We gave away about 3 blatant frees 15 metres out from their goal and the ump bottled it in front of the Richmond crowd.

We've paid for it ever since!

The umpiring across the board is very poor, although it's a very hard game to umpire.

This decision however tends to demonstrate that the umpires are not well coached. How else do you explain the ump throwing in some nonsense about "you were too far out"? His coach (yes, you Geish) should have made it clear long ago that proximity to goal is not part of the interpretation.

Instead they have to make it up as they go along.

Yes, I agree; he didn't know the rules. Which makes this more bizarre -- often umpires have to make tough subjective decisions (Did his hands touch his back? Was that intentional?) and they can't always get them right. But to not understand the rules you're supposed to be enforcing is just about unforgivable.

Dude it is as simple as this, the umpire in question should never be allowed to umpire another AFL game.
Why? Because it is bleeding obvious that there is a defined rule re. this incident.
What is also clear is that the umpire allowed himself to be caught up in the emotion of the game and lost all sight of THE RULES, because of it. i.e. he acted on emotion, like a supporter would.
I would go as far as to say that the umpire had already locked it into his mind that if the disposal went OOB or rushed through it he was going to pay the kick to the aints and didnt even think of the interpretation, rather he just saw what he was only looking for -> ball -> rushed -> free. Sacked for life....he is just a footy supporter who thought to give umpiring a go...
This sorry shit is for weekend games in the local park....not in the elite comp where they get paid top dollar to not make mistakes that affect the outcome of the game. ;)

Agreed, the rules on that situation are clear. When McGuane handballed, my immediate thoughts were, that's ok, under pressure.

But unfortunately umpy boy had his own thing going on....

Sorry we were wrong?

Thats it? WTF, this dog of an unpire shouldnt be allowed to umpire in the AFL ever again, the ****ing maggot. We lost 2 points from this game and all we get is sorry?

how about sending his match payments to the Fighting Tiger Fund and banish him to the bush for life.

Muppet !!

P.S. Sorry Cogga missed your post but I agree 100%.
