Didn’t know where to post so started this thread. . Wedding speeches are not my hobby but I’ve had to write a speech for 2 weddings and a funeral in the last 7 months. I think I’ve done ok with the first 2 as they were for people I love and admire. The last is for a wedding today and it includes my son whom I also love and admire but his soon to be wife is a hard one for me. I like her very much but she can be a hard case sometimes and the fact she doesn’t talk much about her past life with her many step dads doesn’t give me much scope for a good speech.

I don’t want to sound too mooshy or fake. I know I’m at my best when it comes from the heart. I can concentrate on there 2 young kids whom we all love very much and can relate stories about my sons younger days that would embarrass him just enough to be funny.

I have nothing really relatable about my future daughter in law except the standard “ she is a very good mother to my sons kids” but I need more that puts her in a good light. I want her to know our family wants her to be happy with my son. I know she is struggling to fit in to the way our family differs to her own.

Speeches are tough cause you don’t want to offend anybody or spoil a good day for the important people there.

The bride can be funny at times and then turn on a threepenny bit. I really want this speech to go well for her sake.

So here goes...

I will welcome everyone introduce myself and take them through a run down of the ceremony. It was privately held so not many guests were there.

I’ll describe the sentiment as the bride and groom shared their vows.

I’ll take note of the ceremony and any highlights and relate them as humorously as possible without going overboard.

I’ll then talk about there first time together and there life up until the birth of their daughter. And subsequently their son.

I’ll talk about My sons early life and his sense of humour growing up. There will be a prop produced that will make him cringe but then I’ll leave it at that for the people that know it’s meaning it will find it funny and those that don’t can ask him later and he can either tell them or not.

I will get some info off the mother in law about the bride and submit that here. No one from her family want to speak so I’ll try to get their input there.

More to come....weddings today so have to wing the rest. Will update with how it went.

Get a bunch of keys, hand them about to people at the reception, and open your speech with "Now that she's married can all of those who have keys to the blushing brides house please return them" whereupon every gets up and hands them in.

Maybe you should of asked your son what it was that attracted him to her

She’s the Ying to your sons Yang by the sounds of it

She’s obviously a survivor so has strength and a quiet resilience

This happened at my nephews wedding and it went down like a ton of bricks

Ive seen wedding speeches by a parent that may have well been 21st speeches

Its not a 21st you dont need to go into stories too much

Easy way to go if you dont have much to say is talk about how proud of your son you are and reflect that onto the bride.

IE you know in her hes found someone to being him the happiness he deserves, someone that will challenge him and help him grow and you couldnt be happier for them

Went to one where the best man really did tell stories out of school about the groom
Brides family where not impressed

This one was done at my sisters wedding for the grooms house keys
6 girls and two guys handed keys in

Go with the bold. Honestly as someone who has never been married but attended plenty it gets a bit ridiculous. You can have 8 people giving speches. 2 of the best wedding funeral/wedding speeches I've heard have gone for under 2 mins.

If all fails and you have to do it say a few genuine words and by popular demand call off the rest of the speech.

Start with the wedding classic

'I'm a bit nervous i have been told if i do a good job i can speak at his next wedding as well'

Clicked thread to say this

Been to a few weddings shitted up by 21st speeches

It’s not a 21st

Not that I don’t love a great 21st speech will all the trimmings

But at a wedding it’s just boganish, cringey, and shows the crowd you haven’t been to many weddings before (and maybe why)

The mechanics of a 21st are common and popular they have begun to seep into everything

I’ve been to an 18th which was a 21st. Not sure what they’ll do at her 21st.

I’ve been to a 30th which was a 21st.
Not sure what they did at his 21st.

21sts are fun guys but they are for when you are 21

You've obviously seen changes in your son since he started screwing her

Changes for the better. Talk about them. Make the bride and her family feel good. Show them you appreciate what they have done for your family your son and your grandkids

My speech actually went down well. It started later than normal and I was pretty relaxed by then.
I started singing the first line from Roy Orbisons “ Only the lonely” and everyone jumped in with the chorus!
I totally didn’t plan that and it gave everyone a laugh. From their it was easy and I gave a brief rundown of the ceremony which was actually one of the best I have been to. Everything went so well on the day.
My new daughter in law looked spectacular and I mentioned this as well as giving a pass mark to the groom.

I kept it short and to the point and jumped out at the right moment handing the mic to the best man.

Everyone appreciated it.

Before the speech I was worried as these things can go bad very quickly. Families can be complicated to deal with at these functions and one word out of place can ruin the night for the bride and groom.

So I think the formula to a good speech is to keep it light and brief and start with a good joke or do what I did and sing something everyone knows.

Most awkward speech I’ve seen was at my sister in laws wedding
Long story short she can be quite fiery , cracked it over something minor and went on to abuse reception staff , my wife’s family and even had a dip at the mother in law . Was hugely embarrassing.

Her father in law was pencilled in to make a speech , so he basically avoided mentioning her at all just focussed on his son and there family and even gave the wife’s family a badly needed pump up
Under the circumstances he did a great job

Reception was as flat as a pancake and it’s fair today that day never rates a mention

Hey I should’ve used your first line in my speech;):)

In my sons case his previous relationships ended badly. One of these was with a lovely girl who we all thought to be the one! but it ended very badly without going into detail and he changed as a person after this.
I couldn’t use this in my speech as it was far too personal and would make them both feel uncomfortable. Past relationships are a no no when it comes to these things. That stuff you leave until after the speech if you feel it needs to be said.
Speeches aren’t about filling an agenda or big noting yourself. They are only for the benefit of the bridal party and their guests.

I’ll see the bride and groom today so hopefully in the sober light of day they will give me a good review.

Wow that would have set the tone for that relationship. I think the stress of the wedding can really get to some people. Obviously she should have just kept all that stuff to herself but maybe one too many didn’t help.

Actually never had a drink for the day , was very forgettable for everyone there
Amazing 4 years later they still together but that day never gets mentioned

I still think she really has no idea how bad the day was because if it
