Recap at a glance:
  • Harley Reid has signed a two-year extension, which keeps him at West Coast until at least the end of 2028.
  • He still has one season left on his rookie deal, the new extension kicks in for 2027.
  • Cal Twomey reports that the deal could reach up to $2m per year if Harley triggers all incentives (e.g. this is not a base $2m per year deal).
  • This is a straight two year extension, with no player option for a +9 or anything similar.
  • Get a big dog up ya, Victoria.

Hopefully with a few more mature bodies in the guts Harley will have some actual protection.

Still ropable that for most of 2025 it was Harley vs the entire opposition + the umpires. Yes, Harley should have handled things better but without Yeo the rest of the boys were exposed as absolute gutless wonders.

2025 wasn’t second year blues. Yes it wasn’t as great as his first year but after a slow start it was a pretty decent year in the end. He didn’t help him self with his preseason and it showed at the end of the day was th number one mid at 20 years old in the shittest team with no support. Put a fit Yeo and you’d argue last season would be on pr with his first year.

People also need to understand that players development at that age ain’t always linear
Semantics maybe, 1st year no-one knew what to expect and he caught a lot of teams out first time around. 2nd year, everyone was prepared for him, even targeted him, dished it back at times. He lost focus at times and got sucked in, there was a lot of frustration and silly play/reactions, venting with umps etc. He went through a learning curve, was counselled by coaches and team mates. No, it's not always linear, but players often have a 2nd year slump or flattening out.

That's what I meant by 2nd year blues, maybe 'blues' is the wrong wording, but the game caught up with him and he had to adjust accordingly, which took awhile, but probably helped improve his game (or steel him) in the end. Regardless of whether he still had a pretty decent year, or Yeo was there or not, the whole competition was ready for him, including the umpires at times, and he had to adapt. So that factor was different to the 1st year. It's looking like he's primed physically and mentally to go the next level this season, especially with an improved solid core of players around him, inmho.

I disagree with this. No prospect was as heavily touted before the draft. Teams would have known all about him and his game. Maybe there weren't prepared for just how good he would be, but its plain wrong to say teams wouldn't have known what to expect.

Second year perhaps teams did figure out how to push his buttons, but he also suffered with all the contract talk and fitness early on.

A agree he should take a leap this year due to better players being around him and how seriously he's reportedly taking pre-season.

Disagree all you want, no probs. No-one knew what to expect of Harley at AFL level, in a professional club system. Not sure what 'game' he had apart from outrageous raw talent and confidence. But whatever, I remain yours truly, plain wrong! ((;
