this tooWe would be getting absolutely smashed without them.
Yes they are not line breakers but they are doing all the grunt work & forever at the bottom of packs.

I did say eventually not next year. Our new mids have big bodies and are physical plus another top liner next year. Caddy was replaced because he was slow. Lynch came in because we had one forward, room for Caddy if he was good enough.Caddy got replaced by a 26 or 27 year old prime Tom Lynch.
Bit far fetched to think two 2nd year players a both easily going to fly past a 27 year old vice captain Tim Taranto. They'll fly past Jack Ross, Kamdyn McIntosh, Tyler Sonsie, Thomson Dow and Dion Prestia though.
I'm hoping from the mid to back end of this year our midfield mix will be Taranto, Hopper, Lalor, Smillie and McAuliffe. That's certainly the mix I see starting r1 in 2026. I reckon Taranto will eventually spend alot more time forward, rotating with Lalor. Hotton the same hopefully. Hopper will just need to be the inside bull feeding it out to those young guys. If that was his primary role I think he'll comfortably be in the best 23 for a few years yet.

Caddy’s biggest issue even before he was with us was that he could never properly transition to be a midfielder"Lalor and Smillie next season will exceed them easily"
Dimma said we couldn't play all of Caddy, Riewoldt, Lynch and Dusty in the same forward line. That's why he was moved to a wing.

Still didn’t say we move them on next year and yes I think they will be better than T & H next year. And no you couldn’t play the four mentioned, but if Caddy was quick you might have. Lack of speed kills players these days, as we can see most week watching T & H."Lalor and Smillie next season will exceed them easily"

Caddy also couldnt recapture the form at the back end of 2019 when he was on the wing.Caddy’s biggest issue even before he was with us was that he could never properly transition to be a midfielder
Same as Townsend
Handy enough in the right structure but would always get pushed out by proper key position players in the forward line or guys who could do a proper mid fwd rotation
His best role was that med tall , lynch came in and screwed that dynamic right upCaddy also couldnt recapture the form at the back end of 2019 when he was on the wing.
Think you need to lower your expectations 2nd year players as talent as they may be wont be eclipsing the consistency and experience of Taranto and HopperStill didn’t say we move them on next year and yes I think they will be better than T & H next year. As I said not replacing next year. We will still need them unto those kids are more seasoned. But as they are already big and aggressive they only have to get their running games up to scratch. McAuliffe would be playing now if not for untimely niggles, and given how well he has gone in the VFL he I would bet he would be making an impact. If we are playing T & H in 2-3 seasons time I will be very surprisedThink you need to lower your expectations 2nd year players as talent as they may be wont be eclipsing the consistency and experience of Taranto and Hopper
Taranto and Hopper are both top end draft picks with very a similar pedigree to Lalor and Smillie
Prepared to be surprised imoAs I said not replacing next year. We will still need them unto those kids are more seasoned. Then we will continue to advance. Limited players always get replaced eventually.Prepared to be surprised imo
They will continue to be mainstays of our midfield for as long as they are in the yellow and black
Wasn’t the positional stuff that had him wanting out that was just a happy coincidencethink tarranto is gonna have to make peace with playing largely off hff pretty soon, the reason he wanted out of gws.
would not be surprised at all if he puts his hand up for a trade. out of him and hopper i see a lot less enthusiasm from tim.
weird i distinctly remember a narrative of him wanting to be a ft mid and not liking gws's preference to have him sat forward for long stretches. probably all bs.Wasn’t the positional stuff that had him wanting out that was just a happy coincidence
He just wanted to return to Melbourne and it had always been the plan for him to do so
I work with a guy who’s mates with him and played footy with him at Sandringham he told me about him returning and Richmond being one of the main suitors 2 years before the move

Realistically 2 out of Hopper, TT and Ross need to be playing around the ball whilst a Lalor, Smille, McAuliffe, Hotton develop. All bar McAuliffe appear to have added bows so can easily get game time and fill other positions but by 2028 I would want the draftees to be around 50 to 100 games coming into the season.TT and Hopper were traded because GWS had way too many good mids. They were the guys after the main GWS mids - TT with forward skills meant he played forward a lot. So there was no future for them to play the role they were best at whilst at GWS.
Having too many top end picks over time almost always means that you end up with too many good mids (the top 5 picks are dominated by them) - see North.
Our young guys, Lalor and Smillie, will take 3ish years to get to week in week out status. So we want the TT and Hopps combo for another 2 years at least. By then they won't be worth much in a trade and who knows how we'll be tracking as a team.
What we really need is more mobile mids who take the next possession on. That is what Sonsie and Ross are meant to do. Neither is setting the world on fire as yet.
But in no way do I want Lalor and Smillie to be our main men for at least 2 more years. Best way to ruin a super talent is putting too much on them too early. Build them up, I don't care about losses now. 2027 they should start to be genuine AFL players and we'll see what is what then.
No doubt he was happy to be getting more mid time again but he was always returning back to vicweird i distinctly remember a narrative of him wanting to be a ft mid and not liking gws's preference to have him sat forward for long stretches. probably all bs.
With a percentage of 18The ideal scenario in the short term is that Taranto and Hopper support Smillie, McAuliffe, Lalor and Hotton as they develop and gain experience in the middle. Prestia can also help this year if he ever returns from injury.
We’re actually pretty lucky we traded for Taranto and Hopper, or at best we’d be rolling out a midfield with Elijah Hewett, Dow and Ross. I guess we could have finished lower in 2023 and then had a crack at Sanders or Windsor… still we’d be getting obliterated in the middle.
Yep. We're in the middle of one dominant midfield, and hopefully another dominant but quite different midfield. And as far as I am concerned TT, Hopper and Ross (and Dow) are there to provide protection to our new guys. The new guys get experience and exposure, learn the speed and toughness of the game, but aren't beaten up and learn good habit. It'll take 2 or 3 years before we start seeing the results, and then probably another 2 years to start seeing them dominate - so 2028 - 2030. Until then actually winning isn't as important as being competitive and learning how to play AFL level.Realistically 2 out of Hopper, TT and Ross need to be playing around the ball whilst a Lalor, Smille, McAuliffe, Hotton develop. All bar McAuliffe appear to have added bows so can easily get game time and fill other positions but by 2028 I would want the draftees to be around 50 to 100 games coming into the season.
Free card when we get a win … but no accountability for a loss.we still piling on these two? workin' very hard
