Ryda Luke

Position: Forward
Club: South Fremantle
Height: 186cm
Weight:
D.O.B: 19-09-2007
Leagues: AFL U18 Championships

STRENGTHS:

  • Athleticism
  • Power
  • Upside
  • X-factor

IMPROVEMENTS:

  • Consistency
  • Endurance

Ryda Luke burst out of the ground with an eight-goal first half early in the WAFL Colts season, a game which helped propel him into the West Australian state squad. The Fremantle Next Generation Academy member missed the first two National Championships games through injury, but returned and later played a hand in South Fremantle's run to the Colts Grand Final.

There is tremendous upside in Luke's profile. He is a powerful athlete boasting explosive speed and a spring-heeled vertical leap - traits which help him impact the game both in the air and at ground level. That lends to his sense of X-factor, with Luke capable of taking big marks, kicking goals from anywhere, and producing eye-catching moments out of nothing.

While he sustained relatively strong scoreboard impact with 21 goals in 11 Colts games, Luke's consistency is an area for improvement. Perhaps the best example is his breakout game, where he booted eight goals in a half and went without a touch thereafter. Building a stronger endurance base will help elevate his production and allow his raw talent shine for longer. Fremantle will have priority access to Luke and fellow NGA product Toby Whan, but has set no guarantee on draft night.

With Luke, the force is very strong.

He will need more training and development than Toby Whan, but the weapons are there. Speed, power and strength.

If he reaches the heights he is capable of due to his physical gifts, he could be The New Hope this club needs as a powerful medium sized forward, and lead us to the promised land of our inaugural flag.

No pressure, Master Luke.

Sharp is the same except heavily right foot dominated. They just need to get the non-dominant foot to level where it gives them a get out of jail free card.

With all his speed and power as an athlete, one trait that is overlooked and he excels at is his kicking, off both left and right foot he is very adept.

The biggest single factor for Ryda to succeed is belief in himself that he's got what it takes if he puts in the work.

Well, not really. Nicholls was a towering political force, but has there ever been a guy eulogised in a football sense for achieving so little? He played 40 games or something, it's ridiculous how over-hyped he is
Never underestimate the guy who achieves the impossible!
The first of the first!
It's never just about the stats!
For young Ryda...
What we call pedigree can be the foundation of self belief and deep confidence.
And now he's in the right team, strong culture is what brings it out.
Yokai!
We are all in Doug Nichols debt!

Wonder what position they will develop him in.

Attributes sound like they would translate well as a defender with his athleticism and foot skills.

If he is inconsistent having the game in front of him and having forwards lead him to the ball may be best.

He's not overhyped as a footballer. He wasn't selected in the Indigenous team of the century for example.

Regardless, he managed to play 4 times for Victoria, so I think he must have been pretty good. His lack of VFL games would have had a lot to do with the attitudes of the time. An Aboriginal player would have been up against all sorts of odds to even get a game.

Also, he was only 157cm tall. Crazy small by today's standards, but still considered small in the 1920's/30's and just another thing he was up against.
