GO YOU CROW BOYS
I saw this on the main board...

1. B.Johnson- 36 goals and averaging 20 touches a game, a super player and in my veiw the best so far.
2. M. Pavlich- 37 goals and also leading the comp for marks, the best of the power forwards
4. S.Lucas 33 goals 6th for marks in the comp and also averages 16 touches a game.
3. Buddy 35 goals, only in his 3rd season he will be the benchmark for forwards in 3-4 years time a star!
5. M.Lloyd- 30 goals 14 touches a game and is know where near his best yet, has kicked 3 or more goals in every game bar one, playing alot more up the ground these days, will have a better 2nd half of the year

and just wanted to comment that in the context of this list we need to give more than a few props to Welshie.

Despite being an awkward size for a 'key' forward and the fact we haven't been giving the best delivery this year he has done extremely well to be not far off the mark of these superstars with his 29 goals. He's also done that with far fewer kicks than the guys above and has the second best conversion rate (just behind Johnson who has proven himself a champion the last few years) of 69%.

It has been alluded to in other threads that he's doing quite well but I've also seen a bit of Welsh bashing around the place. If the guy is fit he should always been in our side as he is an excellent forward. I really hope he can stay fit and play out the rest of the season as thats always been one of his biggest problems. With Roo and Kenny back in he gets a chance to not be as big a focal point and hopefully some of his forwardline pressure which he used to excel at can be a bit more prominent again.

Well done Welshie, keep it going!

Please don't take this as Welsh bashing, because I really like Welshy and think we'd be stuffed without him this year, but I'd really prefer it if he kicked his bag of goals when the game was in the balance and there was pressure on. A few times this year he has gone missing but finished up with 3+ goals for the day as he's kicked them in the last quarter when the pressure has been off and the result in no doubt. Saturday night was a fine example of this.

Agree, Welsh kicks alot of goals as 'percentage boosters' or in 'junk time' but not where he will turn a game on its head.........this is what he needs to show more over the rest of the season, as it is something that will become important come finals time.

Take nothing away from him though he has been good over the first part of the year and soft tissue injuries seem to not be an issue so far this year:thumbsu:

I'm very divided on Welsh, only interesting thing they said during the game the other day was that Welsh has played in 4 of our 5 losses this year and kicked 2 goals.
Seems to get them when the pressure's not super on but can still kick a bag to put the game out of reach.

I agree with some of the above comments, I'm only 50/50 on Welsh. Given our injuries I would rather have him than not, but won't be that sad when his time is up.

what this guy said :thumbsu:

Bull crap it was 'junk time' as people are claiming - Richmond, we were in trouble and welsh kicked the goal that shut the door and then added a few more to really make sure that the door was shut. Same in the Carlton game and again on the weekend. The roos still had a slight possibility of causing some trouble and Welsh stepped up after other players in our team missed shots that should have shut the door. There was pressure on him to make sure that those goals were kicked and then he really makes sure that the door is shut. That's not junk time it's stamping our authority on a game and over an opponent.

Yeah and Richmond, Carlton and the Roo's backlines are so quality

I'd like to see him tackle a bit more...

when he does chase and tackle... he's really damn good at it. Just would like it more frequently.

Me too; he does it well when he does it and with no Bode pressure we could sure use it at the moment.

The other thing Welshy could do well to abolish from his game is his penchant for wanting to mark the ball on his chest:rolleyes:>>spoiled again!

Isnt he on a one year contract?
The club would sign him again if he continues the way he has begun.

Final quarter of the Kangas game Nikki - the result was never in doubt. Kangas just werent carrying themselves as though they were going to win. 4 goals in the last quarter for Welsh made him look spectacular and really, he wasn't.

They had a few shots on goal that luckily missed, Jenny - the impression might have been different at the game though.

Exactly spot on.

Bocks overall game was better than Welsh.

So Welsh's goals aren't as valuable because he is on poor opposition or it is apparantly in junk time.

Think about this - Welsh's goals late in the last quarter against the Tigers & Blues effectively won us the game. What was Bock & Co doing against this "poor opposition in junk time".

Welsh has often had to play on the oppositions best defender - eg. Scarlett against the Cats, because he is deemed to our most dangerous matchwinning forward. In these occasions, our other forwards need to contribute better on the lesser defender.

Welsh had kicked only 1 goal to 3 quarter time against the Roos, because he was playing further up the ground as a leading forward (ie. playing the Perrie role) & was an integral part of us moving the ball quickly deep into our forward line.

I really wonder how much some posters actually watch the game. We would be worse off without Welsh in the side more often than not.

Has tonnes of talent in a forward line crying out for someone with a bit of class.

Is a strong mark and is good off the ground, a rare commodity.

I am staggered why some people call for his head, do they all want robots to play for the crows? The main criticism appears to be his apparent lack of effort sometimes, but is it really any worse than a lot of our other forwards?

You also have to remember he currently attracts the best defender each week. Ideally he is a 2nd or 3rd forward, if only we could develop a strong bodied marking forward then you would be able to see the true scott welsh.

Also I'd love to see the Hentschel/Welsh tandem working in the forward line at their peak form and fitness. Sadly this may never happen.

Just watched the first quarter again and Welsh spent the majority of that quarter as the lead up forward. So do we judge him purely on goal outputs or should we look at what he does around the ground and where he is being played?

Those judging Welsh purely on goal outputs are not understanding of the different roles he plays from quarter to quarter.

Welshy played more as a deep forward in the last quarter and kicked 4. Early on in the game he was playing Perrie role of a lead up forward. I think he has been pretty good for us in the last 2-3 weeks.

That was my memory of how he was playing but wanted to reconfirm that my memory was up to scratch ;) Nice to see I wasn't the only one who thought that was how he had been played.

Definitely how it occurred. Dare I say Welsh played the Perrie role better than Sarge.

He has actually done this a few times this year

You can see it better at the game ( as with Perrie) how much further down the ground he travels

Sydney game point in case
