Interesting point raised on Footy Confidential last night about the closing stages of the game on Sunday. Apparently Ottens was told to play on eight seconds after taking a mark, instead of the full 15 seconds they're allocated. Since Cassisi kicked the winning goal with 3 seconds left on the clock, and Ottens rightfully had another 7 seconds before he should have had to get the ball moving, is it safe to say we were robbed? :p

I'm not sure what your point was there.

Anyway, we shoudl have held on to the lead regardless of whether Otto was forced to kick early.

In fact, I think this is a good thing to have happened before the finals. Some people will be thinking that this will bring back memories from the 05 semi, and play negatively on our minds.
But I think the opposite. I reckon the players would have been filthy with themselves after having it happen again, and this would be a great reminder of what they need to do to hold on.

The thing is if Ottens was allowed his allocated time, he would've kicked long down the line. When the umpire called play on, the man on the mark was moving towards him and Ottens had no other option but to handpass sideways, effectively keeping the ball on Port's half forward line.

Its all over now, we need to move past this game.

However if this happened in a final....

If we had won, it would have been grand larceny. The result of the match was irrelevant, its about how we played.

We were outplayed in the match, but we found something to come back and almost snatch a victory. Even the best teams play poorly from time to time, but if you can still almost win against quality opposition in such circumstances, then you have to be doing something right.

When i saw the title of this thread i thought you were gona talk about the 97' finals series for some reason.
(We were definetly robbed in 97')

In this game though, nah don't think so.

Umpires have trouble counting to 10 let alone 15.

At the end of the day, it's all done, no need to stress. Hopefully that game provides a big motivating factor from here on in.

The worse thing that could have happened is for us to win a game like that having played the way we did. All that can do is lull the team into thinking that they can just turn up and win.
But the fact we got beaten, and deservedly so, should provide the motivation we need (just like the Kangas game), to come out and start playing ruthless footy again (which I don't think we've played for about 6 weeks).

This could be the best possible thing for our finals campaign.

And no, we weren't robbed anyway, Port deserved to win the match.

i don't think we were robbed, but why the hell can't umpires get fundamentals like this correct?
imagine if it was the g.f or any final?
does anyone remember Moloney in the 2004 prelim?
he was told to play on too harshly, coughed it up and i think Black goaled to put them up.
umpires are so damn inconsistent!

In the last 2 minutes of the game when a team is time wasting umpires are always a bit hot with the 'play on'. It may not be the rules but they consistently call play on early so no we were not robbed.

I thought on sunday port pushed "returning the ball to the player at a free kick or a mark" to the very limit on every occasion and where never penalized. Usually the umpires are right on it as in Milburns stupid 50m where he tried to put the ball on the ground instead of returning it.

Good pick up,deliberate attempt at slowing the game up.Hpoe the lesson has been learned by the players.:thumbsu:

Gerrard Healey says the umpire got it wrong in telling Ottens to play on after 8 seconds, and that the umpire got caught up in the emotion of the game.

Who was that umpire?

MESSAGE TO THE AFL:

He cannot be allowed to officiate during the finals.

One of Matthew James (5), Hayden Kennedy (7) or Matthew Head (16).

I'd much prefer the umpires make these types of mistakes outside of the finals. I guarantee Geelong players will have their full 15 seconds to kick from now on in.

They never give the full 15 seconds in th back half of the ground. When Scarlo takes marks at full back he would get a full 4 seconds before being told to hurry up. Then another 1 second before its "PLAY ON!".

Personally I think it was the 40m backwards kick from Milburn that stuffed us. Put us under all sorts of pressure that wouldn't have been there if he had've kicked it long.
If he kicked it 50m, it would have been in our attacking 50m. There would have been a marking contest, ball would have come to ground, and our crumbers would have kept it in, wasted time in other bounces, and the game would have been ours.

However, he obviously wasn't aware that there was that much time left, and so thought he could go way backwards and the siren go.
