Were We Wrong About Neil Craig???

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

For the record, I'm still unhappy about the selection process (if the reports are true about one of the panel failing to be at the interview of one of the alternative candidates), but given Craig's now the coach, he has had my support since he was appointed. The signs in the last 8 quarters are good, but it's early days.

I've got that photo of Craigy somewhere I reckon! It was a collectors card that came with buying Big Ben pies or something. I've go Mots, Frank Spiel and a few others. Well, I hope I do, at the back of a draw somewhere. Craigy has had great experience from Sturt and the great North sides, and Norwood. Was always a good appointment. Maybe people didn't like the process but to knock him as a potential coach was disappointing. It almost seemed like many Adelaideans were behaving like Vics - if he wasn't a former big name VFL or AFL player or coach, then he couldn't be the best man for the job.

Let's hope people are swallowing humble pie for many successful years to come.

I've been busy on another thread but, dammit, having received much flak over there I can't resist this one.

In my very first post to BigFooty, back in August last year I wrote:

Is Neil Craig a genuine coach?

Who knows? He and the squad will answer that question during the term of his appointment.
But here is an undisputed fact. He has the best working knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of every member of the current Adelaide group.
This knowledge is gold bars for Adelaide. It would have been an act of extreme stupidity to appoint Eades or Wallace and subject Adelaide to one or two years of readjustment of coach and player egos.

Adelaide's choice for Craig is a wise and courageous one.

Craig will take Adelaide higher on the ladder than Wallace takes Richmond every year of their appointments. Or Eade and the Bulldogs.

Those fans who worry about this being an inhouse deal, or something that was stitched up from Day One, or a dark day for club democracy, need to sit down quietly with their loved ones and rethink their premises.

Adelaide has created a new South Australian AFL coach. This act doesn't happen very often.

Back him and be ready to enjoy his coaching.

I'm having fun in 2005. Right now, life could not be better.

For some reason, I can't find a picture of "Coach Ebert" on google to complete the set.......

Those luck Port buggers, they get all the good coaches.

All the way with Neil Craig & he has definitely started the season very well.

but, let's take one game at a time people as it's only round 5.

I think we got too far ahead of ourselves.

Not saying we were right or wrong, its Round 6 next week and I still can't tell.

But we know he coached one bad quarter last night, after next weeks game should give us a better idea.

So far I am happy with Craig's and team's progress. I have said before that NC is inexperienced coach and he will get better as the time goes on. I still stand by that comment and I would expect him to be a much better coach at the end of his 3 year deal than he is now. He is not a bad coach as it is and it gives him a sound foundation to build on.

Have faith ;)

I'm sorry but I question your journalistic credentials...you have way too much bitterness and a need to 'prove yourself' and 'get your back'. A good journalist will be content in his sources and if he is so, won't need to talk about how comfortable he is in being 'right' (even though it's only Round 5 and nothing is proven yet). A good journalist shouldn't need to make puerile posts 'proving' himself to others.

yep, i'm with you mate I have confidence in Craigy. I think he just had a bad night. I reckon Gary Ayres commentating jinxed us. It was almost as if he was the one coaching - stagnant forward line, McLeod deep in the backline and Mattner being wasted as a tagger.

Craig had a sh*tter last night. As said above, you could have been excused for thinking that it was Adolph Ayres going through the slow thinking process with either the absence of moves, delay in moves, the wrong moves etc etc etc.

Eade coached the pants off of him last night.

He regained a bit of credibility with me today though when I saw him on telly admitting that he and the coaching panel had a poor night. But as he said, you can't get it back and you just move on.

I think he'll be working his arse off to get it right this week.

But surely you would expect him to stuff up at times. Just like young inexperienced player, inexperienced coaches will be inconsistent.

I expect Craig to improve as a coach and improve his "coaching consistency" as he gets more experience and better feel for the competition.

I do expect he will improve Stiffy, and in our 3 wins he coached pretty well. But that also was because he didn't have to tinker too much with his original plans while the game was in progress.

When the wheels dropped off in the 3rd quarter, it needed major surgery, not minor tinkering. It sorted out the men from the boys.

At this stage Neil is still wearing shorts!! ;)

Hopefully NC will learn from that disaster and never ever attempt to play Martin Mattner as a tagger again. The kid is an aggressive attacking player who will win us game of football just as Roo, Goody; Edwards, Hart and Macca have done over the years. Martin Mattner will move into the ‘top 50’ AFL players within 2 years and could potentially be the next captain.

Please Neil never attempt to play Mattner as a tagger again, it just isn’t his style as a player. It’s a bit like telling Robert Shirley to go get us 35 touches and kick 4 goals, wont happen but both players are vital to the success of the club.

Please!!!

He is much better offensively than as a tagger.

Your obsession with Rob Shirley is now going to the extremes WW. :)

Mattner is a free flowing attacking wingman or hbf & should never be given the task as a one-out tagger ever again.
;) I can assure you if you read my post again Noddy I said NEVER PLAY MATTNER AS A TAGGER.

Iam supporting very strongly your POV
