I know its not even half way thru the season but i was wondering what everyones thoughts were on our playing list and what direction we need to take to get the results and a possible flag with in the next 5 years.

What players do you think we need to base our club around and what players are getting us no where.

Please discuss

At the end of the year-

Gone
Bolton
Laycock- traded
Campo
Cole

We could only keep one of these three players
Dyson
Pev
Heffernan

Recruit/ draft
Another experienced ruckman (would Geelong take Laycock for Stephen King and a draft pick?)
Developing ruckman (if McKinnon doesn't show something)
Key defenders x 2 (fullbacks take time to develop) (Darcy Daniher?)
Inside Midfielders

agree with most of that, but keep Cole. you cant have a list full off players who are guns & who would play everyweek- we can only play 22 per week.. we need depth on our list, experienced players for when young players aren't playing well or in case of injury

I tihnk thats a problem with most fans over the past few years with henno, bolton and cole. why are they on our list? there is not point having 22 senior players and the rest in kids - the club will go nowhere

I'd take Laycock over King any day. King's almost 30y.o. and can't make it onto the park most weeks. At lease Laycock's get time on his side to get himself right.

If we were to get a new coach (Sheed's wouldn't do this), I would take the Hawks approach and trade one or two players with some currency (eg; Welsh, McPhee) for 1st round draft picks and try and get 2-3 of the better midfielders into our club in the one draft. That way they get their 50 games experience together and in 2-3 years have a midfield boasting the likes of Stanton, Hislop, Jetta plus these draft picks running through it

If Heff has dropped behind any of Nash, Hislop or Lonergan in the pecking order then you'd think he's gone.

Hird and Bolton look certainties. Campo very probably though he might get 1 more year if he stays in the team.

Cole could be in trouble. He's just OK and won't ever take the next step IMO.

I haven't given up on Dyson. He was pretty good in the 1st quarter on Sat night and did a couple nice things in the last.

As for recruiting a lot depends on how Lee progresses the rest of the year. If he can get his body right and show some form as a key defender for Bendigo then I'd like to see us go for a gun midfielder (one who is both inside and outside) with our 1st pick for once.

The question is how many do we turnover?

I would way about 4 or 5.

Definately gone : Hird (retired ), Bolton, Dyson

And we have to let go one/two of Heff, Campo, Cole, Lonergan. These guys have 13 rounds to try and save their careers.

Can Lonergan be put on the rookie list?

I'm happy with a Hille/Ryder ruck combo for the next 5 years.

Key defenders to replace Mal/Fletch in 3 years and midfielders are what we need.

You forgot two laggards- Lee and Laycock- underworked and overpaid.

I forgot Hird retiring. The way he has been playing, he might want to play on for another year.

Laycock is a difficult one. I really want him to succeed, but we might have to bite the bullet with him at some stage and admit that he just might not be good enough.

I agree that if a new coach came in, then the likes of McPhee and Welsh could be looked at for trade. Only problem is that McPhee is a bit of a barometer for our side. When he has played well this year, we have won.

Is andrew Lee going to be any good??? Could be involved with a trade for middle of the range draft picks. Courtney Johns. Will nay club be wanting him

Totally agree to get rid of Laycock would be a huge mistake. It is a known fact that ruckmen are later developers, just look at Sandilands and Cox. They would be the only two ruckmen id trade for.

Get Rid off:
Bolton
Cole
Camporeale (probably retirement anyway)
Heffernan

Can see one of these Going:
M.Johnson (unlikely)
J.Johnson (unlikely)
D.Peverill (improved but has had a big question mark for a couple of seasons)

Promoted: (from rookie list)
A.Ramanauskas
L.Mackinnon

What we should look for in trade week and draft:
CHRIS JUDD, lol
speedy skilled midfielders
Running players
Maybe one CHB to develop.

Just cant help yourself can ya ;). You know well and good there will be players ahead of Dyson to get delisted. You just hope he does. I'm sure if you look deep down inside you, you can realise he probably wont be delisted this year.

I rate Dyson highly, i think he has talent to burn just needs to do it more consistantly. Keep him at the dons for sure hey.

Id be willing to get Steven King down at windy hill. I think he could really give us good Ruck division if he can stay fit.
Surely not. Kings best day are behind him. We should look at getting youth at the club not some has been that is injurey prone. I think we should look at trading the likes of johns and bradley they are still young and hopefully we can get someone decent for them

No one should be talking about this until October. Most of us spend October to March waiting for the season to start and now that it's here you're going to talk about the offseason? Give it four months.

I would keep Bradley and Johns i can see them being successfull for us in the future its to early to trade either of them.

Gone: Hird (Retired) Heffernan, Bolton, Camporeale

To be looked at: Peverill, Lonegan and Lee (pending the rest of his season)

Rookie upgrades: Not Rama (great player, sadly game has passed him by due to illness and we can't carry guys on the list).

To look at: Darcy Daniher, A ruckman (6' 10 plus) and midfielders

Delist - Bolton, Bradley, Heffernan, Camporeale and Dyson. Rama will be promoted to the senior list if he is fit and healthy which will be a huge bonus for us! Laycock will be traded or maybe delisted, he has been at the club for a while and hasnt shown much improvement and same goes for Kepler Bradley. He cant play either end of the ground, too slow to play in the midfield. We need another ruckman and 2 key defenders. Im not sure where Gumbleton will be used probably up forward. More quick, hard running midfielders is a must to increase our midfield depth.

Cant see Peverill being delisted though due to massive turnaround in form. Lonergan will stay IMO and Lee will be handy when the likes of Fletch and Mal retire.

Bradley will not be delisted
Dyson will not be delisted
Laycock will not be traded
Gumby will be a star give him time.

You need to have a long term view when examining the list. We are more likely to delist Johnson and Johnson than Bradley and Dyson.

I agree that Pevs form has been good but at the end of the day he is one paced and a poor kick and he no longer tags. He is in the way of jetta, hislop, dyson, stanton, and all other midfielders in the side. He may stay but long term they are better persisting with the younger blokes

I would be staggered if he is offered another contract and is on the Essendon list next year.

Why. He has pace and can deliver the ball well. He has improvement in him that a peverill doesn't. At 21 he needs to start producing more regularly but given the time it took to get Winderlich up and running he probably has at least this year and next and possibly the year after to prove himself.

I suspect if he was to be delisted he would get picked up elsewhere.

He's already played 44 games and is turning 22 in September. He does not dominate at VFL level and is always going to fade in and out of games with more out then in.

We've made too many mistakes holding on to players for too long in the past.

If we have learned anything then he will not be with us next year.

I Completely agree, Pace and has a lovely kick, just needs to do that 10% more and he will be like winderlich and could hold down a spot on the wing i reckon. I wouldnt let him go. :thumbsu:
