Can someone enlighten me on what constitutes a tackle in the official statistics?

For instance, I note in the weekend's game that Rich, Drummond and Macdonald weren't credited with any tackles - it would be a worry if two of our main defenders don't appear to have touched the opposition!

Is a tackle awarded when it leads to a stoppage? Obviously, with 58 tackles and only 17 frees for the Lions, it's not only counted when tackles lead to a free kick.

How is a tackle attributed when an opposition player is gang tackled effectively by two or three of our players? I've never seen anyone awarded half a tackle.

A tackle basically awarded if it influences the play i.e

- Causes a turnover

- Earns a free kick

- Prevents a disposal from being effective

With regards to multiple tacklers, a player is only credited with a tackle if they influence the player in possession of the football. For example if Proud layed a tackle and wrapped the player up and took him to ground and Adcock jumped on top to add further support, the tackle would only be awarded to Proud.

If the player had his arms free when taken to the ground by Proud and Adcock jumped in and prevented him from disposing the ball then both players are credited with a tackle.

Hope that helps

Speaking of ineffective disposals, I for one am getting thoroughly sick of the blatant disregard the umpires are exhibiting, for not only ineffective but downright illegal disposals, week in week out.

Whatever happened to dropping the ball?

When tackled, the smart players aren't making any attempt to "dispose" of the ball by a legal kick or handball anymore....they're simply dropping it cold!.....and getting away with it!

Anyone else notice this trend this season?

I firmly believe this laxity in penalising incorrect disposals is severely disadvantaging the better tackling sides (like us)

Illegal disposals a plenty luthor and not just the dropping of the ball, I’ve seen numerous handing the ball standing amongst a pack of would be tacklers off to a team mate. I reckon I’ve even seen a couple of union type plays from the bottom of a ‘stacks on the mill’ where the ball carrier almost seems to lunge the ball forwards out of the bottom of the pack for a team mate to grab when the ump is blind sided and then run clear.

btw love the picture blynd freddie

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..... I 'borrowed' it.

Special thanks to BL media productions? Just Photography? Darren Pocock? Studio 55? :o

I know I've seen RU type disposals, only in the last round of games.

There was one in the Carlton game where the player with the ball (Judd?) was tackled and rolled on his back.

He then proceeded to hold the ball "up" with outstretched arms (whilst on his back), whereupon a team-mate coolly grabbed it and then took off from the "ruck"

How on earth this can be considered a legal disposal is beyond me.

Surely it's a ball up or a free for HTB and /or incorrect disposal:confused:

The dopey TV commentators fell over themselves praising the "quick thinking" by the player involved but if it was Judd, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, since Judd is God in their eyes:rolleyes:
