The last time collingwood won the flag in 1990,across the board we had a strong bodied, team of players who had belief, and were ruthless.
Couple that with an innovating, attacking style of football mainly going through the corridor would deliver the best results.

The quicker Buckley can move in and call the shots, tweek the list a little, with the spotlight on players like Davis,Didak,Obree,Lockyer, Fraser and a few others i won't name, are really holding the rest back to achieve the ultimate goal.
We cannot win the flag with players who cannot make it on the park during crucial finals games and players who cannot perform in finals, year after year.
We must find players that can contribute to the team plan and then execute what is required from them.

Was it a real surprise we lost to Geelong ?
On one hand we have a team playing for their right in a third consecutive grand final.A team of hard bodied players, who have a switched on coach
and fielded their best side of the season.
This group have already won 1 premiership, lost 1 and now playing for their 2nd flag in three years. They have been there before so they are ready, after the loss last year.
But also this group have been playing together for nearly ten years.
Collingwood on the other hand, are only a very young side, who two years ago lost their strong men in Buckley,Clement,Burns,Wakelin,Licuria,Holland with an injury plagued Rocca who is set to retire.
The changing of the guard is still happening.
Our senior team of Fraser,Didak,Davis,Maxwell,Lockyer, obree aside from maxwell have not shown the leadership qualities that the previous senior group did.
The sad fact is that aside from MAXWELL,our other leader FRASER has not been able to play in a final since 07.
What is the use of that ?
The few we seem to rely on Didak and DAVIS GO MISSING IN THE BIG GAMES THAT COUNT.
What message does that send to the younger playing group?
We cannot afford to keep perservering with players who simply let us down during finals, year after year.
Changes must be made. Not huge changes especially over the next few years when two new teams start up in the Afl .We need to tweek the team become very active during trade time and see if we can find or unearth a couple of guns through the last uncompromised draft and trade for some quality........ie revisit West coast, offer davis for kerr as an example.
Maybe offer third round pick /Fourth round pick for Seaby. Or chase jamie Charman.
Buckley should take over sooner rather than later. He will become a great coach, and i feel we will get a quicker result from him rather than Malthouse.Malthouse has had ten years, hasn't learnt his lessons and therefore has not achieved the ultimate aim for the club.
Malthouse new that premierships were lost by not having a good midfield and ruck combo, but continued on his merry way playing a one dimensional game plan, taking the longest route to the goals with no avail
Time for MALTHOUSE to concede and take a back seat to Buckley in 2010.
Buckley and his soon to be assistant Brenton Sanderson plus who ever else is appointed, will develop and tweek this young group into a powerhouse club that achieves the ultimate aim we have all been longing for.

We need a tall PACK marking forward. JA and Medders should be right for 50 goals each if everything goes alright. Clokey will probably remain CHF though think he'd probably win AA if gets moved to CHB. With Reid likely to come in next year down the back line maybe N Brown can get moved forward?

Oops forgot about Dawes. Love him in the forward line but not sure if he's a big pack mark we need. Should be CFH and Clokey moved down back.

At this point I'm beginning to think a virgin sacrifice to the Dark Lord, Satan.

These are a list of things that we need:
  • IMO 4 or so years of developing the younger bodies, in this time Didak Leon etc need to retain their speed skill and be able to contribute
  • Reid and Brown to become a very good CHB/FB combo for the future.
  • Wood to really come on, or a very good ruckmen, big stong dominating ruckmen are essential in finals considering how many stoppages/boundary throw ins occur
  • A dominating midfielder, the cream of the crop type. Really need a Sidebottom, Beams or Pendlebury to easily be in the top 3 midfielders in the country, because we have a lot of workmen midfielders but not many super premiums compared to the Saints and Geelong
  • A power forward. Whether this is Dawes or not remains to be seen, but a very dangerous big bodied forward who at the very least will bring everything to ground so our good small forwards can do what they are supposed to do. The effectiveness of this forward really depends on whether Cloke can improve or not

To be it simply;

1. A second ruckman to help Cameron Wood out, we just can't keep relying on Fraser to be fit in September.

2. A young powerful key forward, this should be our first pick in the draft.

3. A Centre Half Back, thank god for Ben Reid.:thumbsu:

4. Vast improvement from our young players.

If that occurs, we will improve next year, and after seeing Josh Fraser break down again, even I admit now Seaby might not be a bad pick up.

We need to put Cloke , Wellingham , Cox on a trade table in order to get picks that will enable us to grab a good young key forward and a inside mid with a bit of mongrel in him ( J. Lewis type ) from the draft . If Cloke doesnt get traded he should play CHB , N.Brown will do a much better job than him up forward .

Well, you don't need to go through two hard games while the opposition has a two weeks' rest, that's for sure. In addition, you simply cannot go into a finals game without a ruckman and a full forward (we found that out too).

But you don't have to feel shattered - that loss wasn't by a heart breaking 1 kick on the scoreboard. :(

The fact that we have 3 players in John McCarthy, Dayne Beams and Steele Sidebottm coming up who have good ability to win the ball in tight and use it well. Coupled with the fact that McCarthy has decent pace means that our midfield should improve. Maccaffer is another that has real top line ball winning and using potential as a mid.

At the moment our midfield is still fairly makeshift. There is a lot of reliance on Pendles, Swan and O'Bree to win the ball out. Swan is now generally the number one tagged player we have and O'Bree wouldn't get a game in any of the other top 8 teams that is not to undersell his important to us but the fact he is so important to us with this kept in mind shows where we are at.

Unfortunately for a number of reasons all these guys are a couple of years physically / fitness wise away from being able to really have an impact in that regard. The sooner that happens the harder it becomes to keep guys like Didak and Davis out of the game.

I think it all stems from there. If your midfield is winning the ball and using it well into the foward line your fowards suddenly look a whole lot better. I still think Cloke needs to be made play closer to goal. As much as I am not a fan of him kicking for goal I am even less of a fan of him getting the ball on the wing / half foward or back flank.

We do need to find a relief ruck for Wood and we need to treat Wood as the number one IMO.

I think as has been discussed by Old Spice. I also think we need to now set a standard of KPI's and any player that does not meet theirs should be up for dropping. Even if this does cause some instability early on. This year we had to many players get too long without preforming.

We need to set a standard that we think we need to be flag contenders and not settle for less and if that means we have to rotate players from the VFL to AFL in order to find that right balance so be it.

Get a new coach. MM has been there for 10 years without a flag. You lot are better than where you ended up.

Who bloody keeps a non performing coach for so long!!!!!!

Eade has been at the Dogs for 5 years with a far better list than Malthouse started with and still no grand final appearance let alone a flag. By your measurements his time must be up too.

Unfortunately for the Dogs their list is going to start to turn with key players in Johnson, Akermanis, Eagleton, Gilbee, Hahn, Welsh & Hudson all with only a year or 2 to go. I would say one more crack next year (with maybe a Hall as key forward) then start a rebuild.

I think the doggies would be better off keeping Eade through that rebuild but that would mean he a long coaching tenure.

The list is good enough(to an extent). All they need is consistancy. They cant keep relying on the same 3 players and then blaming them for a quiet game. These things happen, and they will have bad days and be beaten.
The second tier/younger players need to lift and be more productive - Yes im talking about you Daisy and Trav.

A few of the players to grow some balls come finals time and lead the way!

A little devine intervention wouldn't go amiss either!
