This week off is sooo boring! lol

What type of player are we after? i don't know much about who is on offer..

Apparantly a draft full of mids with little KPP's

I think we need a FF - Allen was probably next in line as a FF post-Kosi...

In oder of preference:

1. FF
2. Fast mid
3. Fast mid
4. KPP

Weve drafted really well i the last couple years. I think maybe we could draft more young midfielders this draft possibly?

Indeed, I'd say we have a few backline prospects and only Heyne, Tunga and Lynch as forward prospects with Armo and geary cooling their jets in the 2s fromt he midfield, probably need to set up a couple more midfield places, forwards who can actually bloody kick straight and swingman type KPP would be very nice indeed.

I agree , but from what I've heard about the draft we will be lucky to get two decent mids.
I think we are better off using our other picks to elevate rookies ( new rule for drafting ).
Possibly Macca could end up a full forward, with Stanley and McGrath both looking promising.

best available probs.

I honestly think we've got every position covered for a while yet, our young crop looks good.

My god, about time someone posted up a draft thread.
Slaps for Fail. :thumbsu:

Genuine Full Forward would be one. Paul Cahill struggling to cut the mustard + Allen's retirement. John Butcher to slide down Everest plz. :)
Small defender, Baker not getting any younger. Don't think we have a genuinely suitable defender to play on those nuggety annoying types.
Anyone with explosively disgusting pace and an X factor.
James Pautjimi, we wanted him last year but he didn't nominate for the rookie draft, a few other clubs sniffing around now though.

Trouble is that FF's are hard to come by, ask the Bulldogs.
We won't get one from this draft.
Can McEvoy be a FF? Is there still a chance for Khan?

I think we can afford to take a chance on developing a couple of specials....maybe project players, or younger players who'll need an extra year to turn into something special. We really dont need to go after mature-bodied players immediately. Set ourselves up for the next stage.

1st round Tall forward
2nd round Midfielder

Rookie draft
Best available out of small defenders, tall forwards and quick midfielders

With Armo, Jack, Gears (and Horse too) not getting massive game time this year, and Ali Smith looking like a reasonable prospect, I think we are well served for the mids.

With Zac, Fish, Plug, Raph, Goose (hopefully) as taller backs and Gaertner & Simpkin seeming good up & comers, we might not need to go beserk even if Max finishes up. Would be a bit of a smack to Goose if we went after another key defender from another club.

That third tall forward has been an issue, and we need to have better coverage for Maverick and Kosi (than just putting Macca there or going without). I also think there is a gap in the rucks if King finishes up and Gardi has an injury. Can't see Stan the Man being a major presence at AFL next year (but may start to dominate the VFL and be ready to impact towards the end of the year).

John Butcher to slide down Everest plz. :)

OH GOD PLEASE HAPPEN!

haha, I can tell you now that he'd love that.

Not underselling any of us saints fans on here but I can tell you now that Butch and his family are more fanatical than most who post here! I have serious doubts whether his old man will switch allegiances after John is drafted! :p:D

but yeah, as much as i'd love it to happen.. not gonna :(

as for the draft, this is what i came up with in the Official BigFooty Phantom Trial Run. I'll be doing the proper one later in the year as well.. I sort of just went best available (after all, just a practice one).. would love some feedback guys and gals.

#16 Bourky23- St Kilda - Mitchell Duncan
(Classy Midfielder with good pace, could prove to be a real steal in hindsight)

#32 Bourky23- St Kilda - Nathan Vardy
(Vic Country Ruckman, Just under 200cms. Drafted him as he can play anywhere, could very realistically end up being our next Key Forward or CHB. Extremely mobile.)

#48 Bourky23- St Kilda - Jasper McMillan Pittard
(Project player, fantastic skills but is as skinny as a rake. Will end up as a HBF at the Elite level.. Love his work ethic, every falcons training session i've been to he is always first on the ground kicking the ball to himself and things like that. I reckon he'll be a gun. General concensus was he's a steal at 48)

#64 Bourky23- St Kilda - Joseph Groenewegan
(will probably go F/S to the Bulldogs, See this kid as a massive gamble but could pay off in truckloads. Big ruckman who could end up being like Cox if he put his mind to it, plenty of question marks in all honesty though)

#80 Bourky23- St Kilda - Farren Priest
(won the Morrish Medal (TAC league B&F) last season. Stagnated a bit this year.. is a midget with elite pace. and i mean elite pace. I'd love us to give him a chance)

Browsing around the drafts and trading forums. Looking at tall forwards. Apologies to those whose work I have plagiarised.

" Mathew Panos - 193cm, 80kg – Norwood (SA)
Panos is very athletic for his height can take a very good grab a home town boy and can kick a long goal. Panos is rated by some as they best key forward in the draft, I think if he can have a big pre-season and gain 4-5 kgs he would be able have an impact next year."
Most people on the trade forum consider he will be picked by the Dogs if he slips that far.

"Daniel Talia - 195cm, 80kg - Calder Cannons (VM)
Talia can play at either ends of the field CHF or CHB were he was All Australian this year. Talia did do a hamstring this year but his a very good player so I would think he will be a high pick anyway. " Expected to be picked mid first round.

Jack Fitzpatrick - 201cm, 84kg Western Jets (VM)
Jack was another one of those players who was talked up to be a very high pick 12 months ago but he has dropped off lately. Jack is still a bean poll so would have to wait at least a year for him to play but he dose have a lot of up side. He can also play in the ruck" Possibility to be a first round pick or may slide to a late second round pick.

Saints will also have to have a close look at their NSW Scholarship players. I don't know much about them, but any we don't Rookie are likely to be nabbed by the AFL for the West Sydney team.

small quick forwards (aboriginal) like liam jarrah please

Is Sudanese close enough? Majak Daw. Raw, oh so very raw, late rookie pick raw potential. 195cm, 90 kg.

Le sigh. I can still dream. :p

Yeah i was quietly watching from a far, thought you swept up. All genuinely good picks, and im not blowing smoke up your arse. Thought you picked perfectly in terms of types of players we need. Doubt we'll go for more ruckman, but granted Vardy at 33 was too good to pass up.
What's the go with Farren Preist? Was talked up a bit last year, but almost slid right off the radar.

Majak Daw is de man, does he come with his own gangsta rap soundtrack?

Get 'im, impressive, needs to work on his hospital handballs but would be a magnificent project player...

or should that be PLAYA

And already has his own nickname, Magic.

Dear God,

Please let Majak Daw be available for St. Kilda's last pick in the 2009 national draft.

Amen.

Seriously the kid looks amazing and I hope we can draft him.

I think that for our first pick though we need to go for a KP prospect who can be moulded into a key defender. Max will retire and there is no way of knowing if Goose can get back to his best. Blake is older than we all think and I'd hope that Fisher and Gilbert can continue to be rebounders rather than stoppers.

EDIT: I just found out that Lovett wants to leave the Bombers. I'd be happy to do a deal involving our first rounder to get him. At his best he is a freak and could compliment our team very nicely. Anybody else interested?

After that I'd go for extreme pace. Geary, Armo and Steven all provide the grunt so we need our next Montagna/Dal Santo to compliment.

Third pick I'd look for a ruckman if one is available. Round 2 and 3 could be swapped if there is a good prospect. With Kingy and Gards both getting on and Big Mac the only option, we need to get some back up for Stanley in the 2's.

Then I'd be thinking about Daw. Unless someone has fallen a long way I don't think it would be much of a stretch to take a kid like Daw in what is supposedly a shallow draft.

It will be interesting to see who goes at the end of the year. Dawson will be put on the senior list and Allen is gone. I'd assume Max will retire and L.Fisher and Howard could be in trouble.

Better to just focus on next week and worry about winning a prelim :o I hope

Definitely should go tall with the first pick, agreed

Already got him. Big Blake McGrath.
